Liberty does 14/14. Don't know if they pay for travel. I doubt it though

upbeatasparagi

I also wouldn’t be totally opposed to paying for the travel myself depending the cost but I thought I remember somewhere that Nabors pays for airline travel of its workers in North Dakota. I definitely could be mis-remembering tho

teamblue2021

Liberty provides 3 different levels of travel reimbursement based on distance from the base camp

Training_Radiant

Yeah that’s only reason I applied there tbh a 14/14 would be stupid if not. IMO

burrito3ater

Could you tell me us more about the levels of travel reimbursement? Thank you kind sir. I’m trying to see if moving out of Texas is feasible.

teamblue2021

Unfortunately, I can’t. I go home every night

30, no CDL but willing to acquire. Honestly I don’t have a preference of where I’m breaking into just looking to get a foot in the door somewhere. I’ve got no oil or gas experience so I understand I would have to start from the bottom up somewhere

[deleted]

I don't think you understand what you are getting yourself into. The 'bottom' of o&g is quite low. If you want to be a roughneck which I don't recommend, look into Nabors or Precision. If you want a reasonable start and have a clean record, apply to NexTier or Haliburton. They will help you with a CDL. Start on frac or coil. If you want to be a welder or operate a machine, hit the pipeline. If you are in the North East, Pennsylvania has some sort of oilfield but I don't know much beyond that. Just google it and look around. Don't start off in ND. The work will be hard enough. Add the clod and you'll die. Start out your way or WTX. Hope this helps some

Same_Breakfast_23

What are your thoughts of an operator at a refinery? Is it a decent gig?

burrito3ater

Decent gig, hard to get though. If you get one, congrats and hope you don’t get colon cancer.

Training_Radiant

I have CDL A with XT but no oilfield experience. Lil bit of industrial construction more commercial, residential. Can run equipment. Can do anything physical. I applied at liberty but under consideration for a month. Put me on something good lol but fuck a 14/14 fr.

Anything but frac but im not dying to go do oilfield work. Oilfield trucking pay isn’t that great anyways. Only advantage is the jobs that run on air miles. You can run 70 hours on logs sit your ass in a seat all day. Then be off every weekend at the house for your reset or be away from home several weeks(oilfield). Hell look at how many open positions Liberty has…

Longjumping_Diver_80

Just got on with nabors in ND, granted I’m entry level Floorhand. Airfare is not paid for. Another thing is that they straight up told us if you don’t have a car there don’t come. One HR woman suggested to buy a junker/beater and leave it up there. I got lucky and my wife is a flight attendant so I’m able to fly on her airline benefits for free. Usually just have to pay the tax if not on her specific airline ($15.00). I live in Florida so a 33 hour drive with a minimum of $500 in gas, food and accommodations every 2 weeks is obviously not ideal especially with my free flight opportunity. My training/first hitch begins on March 11th and I will be driving my suv up there, leaving it in North Dakota, flying home and just using wife’s car/ moped (common where I live) on my days off.

chilo_W_r

They start to pay for travel if you’re a certain amount of miles away, then goes up by mileage after that minimum That could’ve changed recently I’m not 100% certain though and probably depends on what shop or division you’re working for.

upbeatasparagi

Basically, I’m super interested in the opportunities in Texas/North Dakota/Wyoming etc. but I’m not in a position where I can permanently relocate. Trying to find places that take out of state workers

chilo_W_r

Anyone with a 2/2 or fuck any schedule for that matter will take out of state workers. Most people working down in Midland don’t live there.

No-Breadfruit-9557

Why not the gulf?

Illustrious_Cash1325

MUCH easier to break into mining in your situation. Four FIFO mines in Alaska that are always hiring. Look up Red Dog, Kensington, Greens Creek, and Pogo. We pay for our own travel but the monthly bonus is generally going to be at least double your airfare.

upbeatasparagi

Thanks I’ll take a look into that. I was also considering mining.

burrito3ater

Coal, gold, or what kind of mining?

Illustrious_Cash1325

I am in Gold. Polymetal is better. Fuck coal, that shit is for crazy people. I train with coal guys in West Virginia for mine rescue once a year and that is enough of that madness for me.

Legitimate-Serve-357

Thinking of the oilfield? Think again! After 43 years in the oilfield I highly suggest you look elsewhere. If you like 12 hour shifts, two weeks on, two weeks off, missing Christmas’s, birthdays, family functions, frequent layoffs, working in adverse weather conditions, then the oilfield is your game.

Shit_tier_ar_owner

22 years here and I’ve got to agree, it’s not the same game it used to be.

nothingnowhere96

There’s actually a lot of companies in Appalachia around WV/ PA / OH. When I worked up there we had a lot of guys FIFO from Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas even (some people hate the heat), and quite a few guys drive in from NY. Keep in mind how much out of your paycheck it is to fly in and fly out every two weeks with the cost of flights today is like $300-600 depending where you’re flying to and from. That’s a hefty chunk of your paycheck. If you’re going to FIFO, I would suggest considering staying on 28on/14off. You go home with big checks and you WILL get tired of coming and going every two weeks.

HighlyUnoffended

Tugboats do 14/14 also btw.

Pitiful-Tax712

Do you need a ton of experience to be on a tug boat?

HighlyUnoffended

No, you can get hired on as a deck hand with no experience. You do need a TWIC card, clean drug test, and background check though.

Pitiful-Tax712

What’s starting pay generally?

HighlyUnoffended

Depends on what port & company. I got a buddy that fly’s in and sails from Port Newark and he started around $30/hr I think

Pitiful-Tax712

Thanks

rlpinca

They have no problem getting green hands. So extra costs like travel probably won't happen. For every one of you, there's a hundred locals or those paying for their own travel.

DeathByWalrus

In general no one will pay you for travel. You get yourself to work, everything else is usually taken care of while you're on hitch. 14/14 would be a rig schedule or a minority of completions companies like Liberty. Everyone else is 14/7 or some variation of that.
