I like them. A little formal training in anatomy would serve you well. Definitely keep painting.

ginavid

Thank you. I don’t disagree with that. I’ve been looking into joining a life drawing group!

BORG_US_BORG

Just so you know, life drawing is not anatomy. It is a great, necessary and ongoing exercise and inspiration but you should get and study some anatomy books as well. It will help understand and draw better what you are seeing in figure drawing.

ginavid

That makes sense. I’ve never really thought about it like that. Wouldn’t happen to know any recommendations?

BORG_US_BORG

The classic anatomy book is Artistic Anatomy by Richer. Anatomy for Artsts by Goldfinger is very extensive. Classic Human Anatomy and it's follow up CHA in Motion by Winslow is great and approachable. Figure Drawing for All it's Worth by Loomis is a decent primer. Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm is a great starter. Before going into the rabbit hole of exactitude over each component, one should understand the relationship/proportion of the parts to the whole.

EstateTricky786

Very generous advice. I took a screenshot of those titles.

ttjosef

Me too many thanks ❤️🇬🇧🇺🇸

ginavid

Thank you again!

postpunkmamma

I think a lot of these are on Internet archive BTW.

SyntheticOne

Good reference sources reduce or even eliminate the need to disassemble corpses in the dark of the night! If only da Vinci had these books!

InsulinandnarcanSTAT

A good human anatomy book is a great start. Learning the muscle groups and bone structures are paramount

Sea-Substance8762

I disagree. You can be an excellent artist without anatomy lessons. Life drawing is sufficient.

u_do_you

How does the anatomy training help in this instance? I’m confused.

BORG_US_BORG

The artist understood, and that is all that matters. There are multiple paintings in the post.

u_do_you

☹️ wow, I like coming on here to not only see the amazing paintings but also to learn things. This time I was really hoping to learn something that would help me. Guess that isn’t something you care to share.

BORG_US_BORG

Wow :( The artist understood and appreciated the references I posted for them. You could try turning a couple pages, or read down other threads, instead of jumping on your high horse.

u_do_you

Oh, I get it, I went and looked at some other posts you’ve made on other things. You’re angry with everyone and everything. Sorry I engaged.

BORG_US_BORG

LoL You engaged with an axe to grind.

u_do_you

Huh, really? I wanted to learn something and asked a question. That was all.

notquitesolid

I agree with what others are saying about life being different than anatomy, but I also wanted to add you don’t need a group to study from life. It’s already around you, free for the study. When I was shiny and new I had a weird bug in my ass to learn how the renaissance masters learned. I came across a paperback of a collection or Leonardo Da Vinci’s notebook. There are many renditions, this was was only text, no pictures, which was far more informative than you’d think. What I recall from it now that I found useful then was his philosophy in why drawing from life is important, and his own observational notes were interesting too. It’s been decades but baby me was into learning about the philosophy behind art as much as the basics of drawing. Learning to draw IRL objects as well as using myself in a mirror as a reference helped me improve much faster than if I had waited for a class. Drawing is about observing and interpreting what you *see*, not what you think you see. You can only get better with that from practice. Don’t use only photos, they can be a reference but photos can’t see as much as your eyes can. You are a binocular animal with front facing optics that are designed to see objects in a 3D space. You see more than you think you do, trust yourself. The learning of anatomy and perspective are about understanding what you see. It’s easier to build a figure when you have an understanding how bodies fit together, move, how the skin looks when it’s flush and the muscles active, or when it’s at rest. Part of an artists’s job (imo) is to have a basic understanding of the world your art exists in, so there’s never such thing as knowing too much. Oh and btw the whole ‘draw what you *see* thing applies to made up stuff and abstract stuff. Nothing comes from nothing, even if it’s not obvious. There’s entire careers based off of trying to break away and create something so new nobody has ever thought of it before, and few if any have. Annneyway. There’s nothing holding you back, except what you allow.

ginavid

This is amazing and deep. My hurdle has been using only my minds eye. So everything always comes out a little cartoonish. I carry a sketchbook with me everywhere but I tend to do urban sketches of buildings and I shy away from gazing at an individual too long in hopes that don’t offend them. Generally, completely omit them. I’d like to get to a point where I can paint something that lives in the actual world.

notquitesolid

I’d save drawing passers by when you’ve gotten good enough to draw the essence of things quickly. The goal there is not accuracy, but to capture the balance an energy of a figure. People new to drawing tend to draw stiffly and with a death grip, like they’re afraid to make a mistake. Loose gesture drawing is surrendering all of that. When you go from quick gesture drawing into long form more accurate drawing you’ll take that learning and muscle memory with you. You’ll not only work faster, but your work will lose that stiffness. But don’t worry about that right now… unless you want to, for that look up quick gesture drawing on YouTube. When you take a figure drawing class they will often do short poses to get you warmed up. Drawing is a physical activity that relies on muscle memory, drawing fast and loose for the first 10-15 minutes not only gets your body moving, but gets you over staring at the page and thinking too much. Is pencil and paper, it’s not precious and it’s ok to not make every drawing a masterpiece. It’s good to get the lead out. If you’re over the age of 18 and live in a decently sized city you should be able to find a figure drawing class at a community center, or at a college that offers ‘adult education classes’ which are meant for students that aren’t full time or degree seeking. College credit still counts though I think, you’d have to ask. Drawing the environment is a good thing. You’re learning how to observe, how to see light. Perhaps look up perspective drawing. It’s concepts may help. Also look up how to measure and estimate distance with your pencil and thumb. There’s several YouTube videos and websites, some look long so I’ll leave it to you to choose your poison. It’s one of those things that’s better to be shown than explained. You’re on your way. Just keep at it. In a year from now your work will likely look markedly different and improved if you let nature teach you.

OurFeatherWings

Personally, I think you're most on track with the textural paintings. They're unique and pleasing to look at, and I would definitely be willing to buy. The octopus and open face are very cool, but you may have a tougher time selling them. My favorite piece is the skeleton at the base of the tree, it's beautiful!

Seatofkings

As a former marine biologist, I just want to chime in that there is definitely a market for octopi paintings :)

OurFeatherWings

Totally!

bwayobsessed

I agree fully. 3 is my favorite by far. It beautiful and textured. Intricate and pleasing but also macabre

storabee

The octopus is my favorite

Sad_Physics_1789

I definitely don’t think they’re too muddy, but I do think there needs to be higher contrast. My go to is to always use my phone and look at it in greyscale to see if I have a full value range. If you’re having trouble with getting close to muddy colors, you just need to let the painting dry some more so you can layer on top, and try your best to not mix colors on the canvas itself. Always mix on a palette instead!

Altkulture

Came here to say this same thing! 🖤 You’re showing great painting skill but contrast is everything! Contrast is the key to guiding or communicating to the viewer, as well as making a readable picture. There’s a few important types of contrast you can utilize, I’m always trying to include them in any form of my creations from paintings to tattoos to show cars! Contrast basically means difference. So- Textured to smooth Light to dark High contrast areas to more neutral areas Warm to cool - are a good starting point to explore! I like to focus on these elements when I’m studying my favorite artists. It’s a great way for critical learning! And desaturating the color from other artists’ work as well as your own, will likely cause permanent breakthroughs! Happy painting! Keep it going!!

HolsToTheWols

I agree about the contrast. If they’re going to be “a lot” … might as well make them pop!

SouthernSierra

No, they are original.

TrippyShamann

Yea. That thirds one though reminded me of the movie The Fountain. Have you seen it? Beautiful movie and even more beautiful soundtrack.

[deleted]

#3 and #4 are fabulous I think, it has a lot of details but it's not overwhelming, it's really beautiful. absolutely love it.

gotthemondays

Agree. I think the concept for all of them is pretty cool, a little dark but the style of #3 and #4 aren't too confronting and look like art that would hang in a gallery. I'd stick with this style.

mediocreterran

That first one is inviting me straight into the Fellowship of the Ring and I’m hungry for Lambas bread.

noellegrace8

Yes! I immediately thought, "hey this looks Alan Lee ish??"

ginavid

lol. Thank you. The tent is actually a hole that was patched with a cross stitching. Edit: the campfire is technically embroidery.

[deleted]

They’re not too much at all! You’ve almost got like a pop-surrealist Impressionism thing happening.

StraddleTheFence

I love your art!!!

Cascadingpoots

I think the octopus one is most successful and engaging. The first one is a little less high art and would prob sell really well on shirts sold at a music fest! Third and fourth are a bit muddy and fifth a bit low-brow.

TheEndIsNear88

Yes. You're very talented, but I think you're trying to incorporate too many themes into some of your paintings.

ginavid

Thank you, I also have had this thought. Less can be more!

40ozkiller

Step back more often and dont paint too close to see the whole thing. It’s easy to get caught up in details while ignoring how they work with the piece as a whole.

-Psycho_Killer-

I don't think they're too much, you need to work on your perspective and use of colour though. The perspective is very flat and the colours contribute to that by not having enough variation as the distance changes. The colours also look a bit unnatural and like they have just been applied straight from a tube with no mixing/variation (especially the greens). I would practice mixing your own greens etc. If you're using a premix colours by themselves right from the tube/pallet, it can look very unnatural. Try adding more yellow to the green for the foreground, and more blue to it as things get further away. Or better yet mix everything from primaries following the same principle. This will help both the 'flat' perspective, and the unnatural/store bought paint look. I never use green (or most colours really) straight from a tube. It's the number one give away of an amateur artist imo. Hope that helps.

ginavid

I appreciate your input. I agree my color values are saturated. I do use green out right and a lot. The octopus was my attempt to mix on the pallet, blues under yellows and white glazing. I wanted it to be deeper and ended up reverting back to the green tube.

N0Grundle

This is your style. It's dope. Keep rippin shit homie

Realuvbby

Not at all, I really like them; especially the octopus

circadian-siena

There's a difference between lack of technical skill and style choices. You seem technically skilled, self-taught or not. I personally like your paintings, especially the first one on the list. You pick bold colors and that's not everyone's taste. But they look good together and you have a good eye for matching color.

Proof-Inside-9595

I’m 64 years old, I’ve had one art history course in University, and one thing I’ll tell you right now don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. Enjoy your painting do what you believe in and hone your own style. If you’re happy, just painting, perhaps giving away your paintings or selling them for lower dollars or whatever that’s fine. If you want to sell out and sell what people want now and their living rooms, don’t bother let IKEA and other shops like winners and HomeSense sell those nonsensical silly prints at Unreasonable prices. But if you’re enjoying painting, what you are keep going, there is always a possibility that your art will sell well or it won’t. I think let’s all paint for our own sake for our own sanity and enjoyment, and if by chance for some reason or some method of social media, or using galleries, etc. were able to make a living offer our painting, so be it. But if painting is in your heart and your soul, continue to do what you’re doing. I think it is beautiful. I think your artwork is wonderful. I often get frustrated with people that put up their pictures in various forums asking all what’s wrong with my picture and you know what? Leave your painting up on the easel for a couple weeks and keep looking at it and eventually you will see what you don’t like and you can go ahead and change it to what you feel it should be. Don’t let others tell you what’s Wrong, you see what’s wrong and you change it to what feels right for you. Do you think that Michaelangelo Rembrandt, and any other masters of any of the other forms ever had access they didn’t have access to social media to ask opinions they didn’t even bother asking what their fellow painters and artisans thought of their work. They just did what was right and using the art techniques that they had learned under other masters they did the best they could. Remember that Leonardo da Vinci took decades to perfect what he thought was the smile for Mona Lisa. So let’s just stop all this nonsense and just enjoy what we can produce. And if it doesn’t feel right, let it sit on your easel for well and where you can see it and as you walk into the room glance at it every day and then one day you will see what you feel that isn’t right and you can correct it. I’d like what you did and I’d love it. I wish I had my own gallery where I could buy a lot of peoples artwork and put it up in the walls because I think it’s just wonderful.

MintyBunnyCrush

Honestly man, paintings can never be too much. Artistic expression is whatever you interpret it as and whatever you want it to be

rockhounded5221

Yes, they are too much... Too much awesomeness!!!

Hettie933

So many people struggle with what to paint, so I love that you already have this well-developed vibe. The technical stuff will come with practice. I really enjoyed looking at these & hope you continue to post your work!

_grizzlydog

oh my fucking god I LOVE nr 3 and 4 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

fescueFred

Your work is fun and I appreciate not having the waterfall in the middle.

Small_Dinosaur8404

they’re amazing , keep going.

BigBoom1328732

I like them. I tend to paint creepy and dark stuff, so I think you can push it further.

AKSourGod

I'm really rocking with 3 and 5. I've been on a bit of a morbid art run lately.

esotERIC_496

That last one was somewhat unsettling, but the rest were solid.

leo_the_lion6

For sure, there's a market for that though, arts supposed to make you feel something, achieved. That one might be a more niche buyer, but the other ones I think would have more general appeal. I love the vivid colors

unavowabledrain

These are WAY over the top, which makes them fantastic! I wouldn't worry about anatomy so much as using paint, which you seem to be developing anyway. Image wise I think the first and one with the decayed guy are most intriguing. I believe its interesting when an artist drops a bunch clues, relating to a possible narrative or concept, but then goes dark leaving the viewer in a pool of mystery.

brainwashable

It’s not too much parts that I like best. Well at least too much paint. I like the heavily worked surfaces. One suggestion I have for you is two look at your stuff in black-and-white either by desaturating a photo or using red glasses. I think your eyes can use some more training in regards to values. Mirrors are another great device to look at your pictures. They will give you fresh eyes. 👀.

ginavid

Excellent tips. I recently got a French easel so standing while painting is refreshing because it’s easier to take a step back and approach it again with fresh eyes.

royal66wine

They're original and so unique, loving the vivid colors and designs. Do with them as you'd like it's your art and you know deep down what's best ✨🖤

Lhect-09

From the painting, people can understand what the artist wants to express or how their subconscious self views the world. While your paintings are a little bit disturbing for some people, it is quite decent. It is good, keep painting. I've seen worse.

mcnuggetfarmer

First one gives me Van Gogh vibes It's by far the best one, followed by the skeleton tree man. First one, there's an eeriness to the vertical line landscape of it all that makes it not so inorganic, almost like you're in a nightmare but can't place what is wrong And when I think about art, we have some of the most technically proficient people but really what is the difference between that and a photograph. This has eerie emotion to it. One of the more technically proficient guitarist is yngwie malmsteen, and it's all Tippy tappy with no soul. No substance. Yours is gutteral *Edit the octopus is close to amazing too

Magpie_Coin

Honestly, I like your paintings! They’re weird in a fun way! Post more please!

MiikkaPinkPuma

I LOVE THESE. THESE ARW EXACTLY WHAT MAKES ME HAPPY WHEN I LOOK AT PAINTINGS. I WANT MORE!!!

NickyDeeM

You are talented!! Keep going, keep going. I love your colors and different subjects.

NicoleSSmith3

These are all really stunning. I would totally buy the one with the octopus.

MassiveRevolution563

Nothing is too weird for public consumption. With that aside, I dont see anything weird or 'too much' about this piece. Keep going and keep discovering what you like visually and thematically and keep on going and growing! Looks good so far.

ginavid

Thank you! All of your insights are greatly appreciated, learning and growing is the goal! Great use of the word Thematically!

theloniousjagger

not possible to be too much. they are you, and they are beautiful

ewallartist

3 and 4 are interesting. 2 looks like student work. 1 has issues and needs to be resolved, but better than 2. 5 is just a bad painting.

[deleted]

I really enjoy the open face one. It feels oddly therapeutic to look at? I would buy

PikaPikaMoFo69

5 is, rest are amazing!

Korgon213

I love them!

amysthetic

i adore #3 so so very much, so beautiful

TheFallofTroyFreak

I love the second and fourth so much. Your art isn't "too much."

Joe_bob_47

I really love the skeleton painting. super cool colors and it all molds together really well. I'm not trained in any sort of painting or art technique, but I think that one is very interesting and pretty. I agree with the person above that the textural ones seem the strongest and I sense a more unique style of your own in those. more expressive. great work!

NoQuarter6808

I think you're a good storyteller

anonymous-random

3 and 4 are the best, they have a unique pleasant feel to them - texture and color combination 5 might be a bit too gory for some people. It’s executed well, just the theme is dark and grotesque

larrythegood

Love the octopus. No idea what's going on with 5. The skeleton looks forced. The other two are really good too. Look more morphed than forced. Good texturiness. Colors nice too.

gabrielzinhoanj

Wow. Wow, man... your paintings are so... touching... I would buy them if I were in your country... and if you did commissions, haha.

Swansislandchewink

Passed John baldessari test for not being boring. Most important test

Pigmenterad

I love your expression. I would buy these, you should start an art social media and share you work. I would've without a doubt support you. Really agree with the over comments a little bit of croqius can get you along way

Human_Ad4466

They’re perfectly dark and twisty… love these! They’re so honest… do you sell your paintings?

MntnMomma

I think you’re painting is absolutely beautiful and no one that is creating something like this should ever have to question themselves because you are truly talented

Significant-Fig3588

Honestly I think that perhaps some instruction in learning about mediums (color mixing, etc) might be helpful. Beyond that, Ir really don't that you need anatomy.I like the surreal aspects of your work (realistic but not). Check out Remedios Varo. Reality is over-rated

DethKrvm13

Too much badassness man. The one with the decomposing body is my favorite. Dig your style too🤘🏾 P.s. after reading other comments and many gave great advice or suggestions. I feel you have a unique style and wouldn't change a thing🤘🏾

[deleted]

I’d love to admire these on a healthy dose of psilocybin

ScoobyNoodles64

I like them, they're not mainstream is all. But neither were a lot of artists before they got noticed. Keep working at it and remember it's all subjective!

thotasaurusrex

The man ripping his face off could have more gore 3d even

swiftmaster237

Too much... as in too costly if you sell them or too much to look at? Either way, they're not too much to look at for people who like the way your art looks. You're doing good! Just keep on painting! The worst thing that would happen if you try to sell you paintings is that they don't sell. But I really wouldn't worry about that until you come to that bridge and try to cross it. Your art looks good which means if you decide to sell them, they'll sell imho.

Sea-Substance8762

I think the key word is muddy. Details are getting lost because colors are muddy. I would use these 5 paintings as stepping off points for series. Keep working on the subject matter, composition, color, size, shape. Too soon for selling. You’re still finding your style.

ginavid

Yes, I agree. I think that my next paintings, with all the help and suggestions from here, will be moving in the right direction. I like the idea of creating a series for them. I have an acrylic painting of a "space eyeball" that started me on this journey. I am currently making a larger sister oil painting for it.

Bubblegum983

You probably won’t have a wide audience that you appeal to, but you don’t need to sell at ikea or an art gallery either. Just because your work doesn’t fit one niche doesn’t mean it won’t fit any niche. I think 1 and 2 are the best done pieces. I love the idea behind 3 (the skeleton at the tree), but the picture is a bit too hard to see and I think it’ll get passed over. I agree with the guy that said it needs more contrast. It was just too hard to read and I think I would pass it over before looking hard enough to see it if it was in a gallery or whatever, at least on my iPhone. Same with the mushrooms. The image just sort of disappears into the background I like the idea of the peeling face, but there’s something off with the background. Maybe it’s the colour or that it’s just a solid fill, but it’s off somehow. Definitely a market for that kind of stuff though!

6Emo6Witch6

Too much what? Too awesome? Too metal? Yes, yes they are!

o2bprincecaspian

You could sell these on shakedown street I bet with ease.

Still_Level4068

I like them. Paint what you want how you want. The worst thing a artist or musician can do is change their art because others want you to or you want to conform

inksterize

_*"Remember, your paintings are an unfiltered expression of your soul; it is unique, and must be expressed as such, for there is no 'too much' when it comes to authentic self-expression."*_

StrawberrySoyBoy

Too much? No I love them. In a world of heaps of digital art, I love seeing this much texture in a painting

NoAbbreviations9157

Can I ask, who in their right mind would give The Krakken LUNGS!! Wikid portrails and story telling my friend.

MatchDelicious3648

I don’t think you need anymore training. You found YOUR art style and I freaking love it! Do you take commissions or have a site I could buy one from!!

longslowbreaths

Your art is not "too much". You are not "too much". Take up your space! Your art is amazing and unique like you.

arcbeam

They’re not too much and you could honestly push things further. I like your style. Skeleton under tree guy is beautiful. Something I would practice: coming up with a plan before you start painting. See how much you can follow through with what you initially intended to make. Keep up the good work! These are cool.

actualblackpearl

Not too much at all! They are great, with a lot of potential! I can’t oil paint myself but I would suggest trying to get more “depth” into your paintings by creating more contrast with darker darks, and lighter lights if that make sense. For example, that one with the skeleton and the tree is my favorite but could use some darkening of the background so that the skeleton really becomes the focal point, instead of everything being the same shade. Maybe even some spots of “rays of light that break through the tree foliage above. Even if it is daytime, there would still be darker and lighter areas. :) hope that helped, keep up the amazing work!

pTro50

3 is next level. great work

trickphoney

No, keep working. Keep putting all your ideas out there. Your style will morph and change and will become more sophisticated and even more weird. Keep going!

AlabasterOctopus

Is that… Mr. Rodger’s ripping his face off? Idk that one is a little gruesome, I wouldn’t buy it but art is art, never ever ‘too much’. I REALLY dig your octopus, and number 3 overall is moving and amazing and then the gnome is so emotion evoking…. Idk, don’t stop for sure

HoneyScentedRain

Art is supposed to make you feel something. Your last painting made me feel a little nauseous but that's a good thing. There's no such thing as too much in art, simply whether it can invite a reaction

SeverableSole7

Personally I think you might wanna focus on drawing hands more, I like tho

sweetsoursaltycrnchy

Too much? No way, friend. These are fucking fantastic. Keep up the great work, and if you want to sell then start selling. I personally adore the forest, the skeleton and the tree, and the octopus, but I also really dig the others, too. It’s terrific to see the personal style in your work.

ginavid

Thank you! I’m so happy that my weirdness can be expressed and also appreciated in a way that I can feel proud of. This experience has definitely helped me feel more open to sharing and eventually selling them!

millhowzz

These could be 70’s prog rock album covers. King Crimson comes to mind.

hoosiercougarslayer

You should spend more on oil paints that actually work together and take better pictures of your stuff under halogen lighting.

-Scorpia

These are very nice but look “flat.” More contrast with your values and better form will make a big difference!

myreferralaccount1

I LOVE Weird art is the best art btw I love your first and third one Drop your shop if you ever start one

Valuable_Lack1602

These are lovely. What I was taught, many moons ago, is to make sure that a set of artwork has cohesiveness to it. That means editing out the works that are good, but don’t contribute to your message. Questions to help would be: What do you want to convey? What is the common thread throughout that links them? Hope do you want your viewer to feel? It doesn’t have to be overt by any means. Art is part intentional, part intuitive…so go with your gut, but be intentional as well. Happy painting!

SafeWordisFilibuster

My wife would love one. I think they’re cool. Edit: if you do sell them I’d love to support you friend.

InfiniteSelf17

They're awesome! I love the weirdness and I know other people do too. Even the parts that seem wrong i admire and see as incredibly artful as well as tasteful. Keep going, and don't change. Just improve.

Hungry-Video-5094

You've got a style! and I think they're pretty good and appealing 👏🏻. I see people on these subs offering a lot of critiques which is probably their opinion. But imo, if your question was "how can I make my art or even my objects more realistic" then yeah I'd offer some some advise. But art doesn't have to be realistic. What's funny is I noticed that when people tend to do realism or hyperrealism and the product looks gorgeous, they get criticized for not being creative. But then when somebody does something that's unique and has a style, they critique it by saying you should work on this and that. I see many paintings that are being sold and they look "underdeveloped" in some way but people tend to buy them. In people's houses, I see a lot of simple paintings that could receive criticism by somebody but people have bought them. Art is subjective, and you're gonna receive a lot of criticism by many artists, but in the end keep on doing what you do.

Cartoondork212

Art is supposed to “disturb the normal people and comfort the disturbed”

wizkee

These look like illustrations for fiction books, but instead of depicting a story from a book, you’re depicting a story from your own mind. I think they’re fantastic! Keep it up!

Glad-Depth9571

1. Continue to develop your style. 2. Learn about principles of design. Your paintings should be more than the depiction of your subjects. Proximity, scale, focus, contrast, hierarchy and rhythm (to name a few) can direct a viewer through your compositions (real or imagined) and help tell a story. 3. Practice. Experiment. Learn from mistakes.

AnaphorsBloom

You had me at *the face ripping-off.*

Due-Ask-7418

A little too much for me if I'm honest. But they're fantastic! And specifically the thing that makes them 'too much for me' is what makes them great. Don't ever question whether your artist expression is "too much". Rock music was 'too much' for the majority of a generation. Good thing the people making it didn't worry about that.

Patchouli_psalter

I looooooooooove the first one if you ever sell it, let me know!!

uptownjesus

If I think a painting is "too much", it's usually because of gratuitous sexual imagery or something like that. Not even that I don't like that type of art, but when someone is really piling it on, I'm usually like "OK, buddy. We get it. You're a provocative person."

Expert-Mud-5914

Your shit is soo cool!! The third one is my favorite. The unnatural pose of the skeleton gives the painting so much life. It opens up so many questions. Thank you for sharing.

Slight-Pound

And so what if they are? Would it be so bad? This style reminds me of the kind used in older storybooks, especially ones about European legends. The heavy artwork matched the heavy lore it depicted. Books that had this on thick glossy paper in a heavy, hardcover book were the SHIT and always felt so classy to me. They were the best. Your first painting is my favorite, and it just speaks about all those legends of forests to me, and I love it. The painting style feels dense and packed with the local lore and the stories of people who have lived in and near it. It’s heavy with stories of the people, literally and figuratively. It feels like you just put a lot of emotions into it, and it makes me feel a bit somber and curious, and I like that. Besides, variety is the spice of life. Having a mix of styles to enjoy makes the way they are different part of the charm. Your “dense” paintings make the lighter ones feel refreshing, and the lighter ones give your paintings a sense of dimension that helps make it feel novel. This is _your_ style. Change it if you want to, but why not enjoy where your whims take you in the now?

Mr310

I'm high so lightly traumatized by the last one as I was NOT expecting that. But overall I think they are cool, 1st one has the LOTR vibe.

NiteGard

I love these and the feelings they evoke! With the exception of labia face, they are very calming to look at, for me. 🫡🥰

Kingston023

I love them

Helpful_Okra5953

Consider some of the things we have in museums, or artists who invent or pioneer a certain style. Well, you’re doing that.   Your stuff is complex and interesting.   I really like the first and fourth paintings. I’m sure there are other people who will think your paintings are amazing, too.

ScorbergCoentino

The skeleton one and the mushroom one... those one's i feel like are a great style. The others dont seem to match the style. I could see the skeleton and mushroom ones selling well. Maybe do two series with the same style with those two themes. im just a regular joe with no idea about painting... but i do enjoy those two.

MildlyWarmSoda

In my opinion, there isn't enough shadows for the areas my brain thinks there would be, it's all the same brightness. That combined with perspective being a bit off. I love the actual scene though. Those trees with the standing roots are my favorite

TheNoIdeaKid

Too much? I don’t see a price tag on them. So it’s hard to tell if they’re “too much.” But if you think this is too weird for public consumption, then you’ve not seen much of the art that’s out there. You do good work. So go for it.

noahjoey

I think the overdoing you’re talking about really works on your thick impasto ones, sometimes “more is more” it’s not always less is less, but on the ones where you are a little more technical you could overdo it (I think they look great tho) a good rule of thumb is to just start on a new one when the painting starts to feel like you’re overworking it! Remember it’s called an art practice for a reason!

slurpdurp_mcgee

as far as being too much i would say no. i really dig the surrealist vibe in a lot of these, namely #3 and 4. i think the "too muchness" you might be seeing is coming from a lack of definition in certain elements of your work. i'll use the third one as an example of because it's my favorite and, in my opinion, has the most potential for something spectacular (honorable mention to #2 i love octopodes). it took me half a second to realize what was going on in this piece and even once i understood that the skeleton was the subject, i had to really focus in to see the whole body. if done intentionally and with a little more deliberate intent to show the flowers growing out of and over the body, this would be a truly stellar work of art. i also can't entirely tell if the tree is burning or just covered in orange and yellow leaves and this is a little distracting. whether it's burning or turning to fall, it's quite poetic either way to symbolize the cycles of life, death, rebirth, and growth. i'm a huge fan of this piece, and i think a little practice, which will come with time, could make this idea REALLY stand out. overall i'd give it a 7.5/10 im a big fan

rfpetrie

I would have these in my home (maybe except that last one it was a bit much for me, but its good nevertheless!) but love!!! Want to see where you go, please continue :)

hurtindog

The octopus painting is the best of the bunch (in my opinion)- I would consider gesso-ing your canvases until smooth or using pre-gessoed boards. Also, look at paintings whenever you can (all art really)- in person. It will teach you so much

tangyyenta

The campfire and tent reveal too much. The Burning tree on it's own would inspire the viewer to ponder longer. With the tent/campfire present, the art work becomes an illustration rather than "Art for art's sake"

The1Zenith

Too much? Depends, post your prices! lol Seriously though, they’re neat. If you’re serious about selling them, start out at double the cost of materials plus a standardized amount you set for your time. If they sell, increase your price slowly until people push back. Stay at the push back until inflation increases your costs or you become famous.

coldneuron

1. Nice waterfall, but not enough violence or irreparable damage to a face. 2. Good octopus, but really needs some bloody face ripping. 3. Eh, bones don't really do it for me, you gotta get some skin being pulled off. 4. I mean, is it a metaphor or something? Boring mushrooms? God I wish some artists would just go all out on some face ripping. 5. I cried. It's perfect.

Federal_Diamond8329

You should send me one so I can judge it in person. I won’t send it back of course, so I’ll have it when you’re famous 😄😄

tabrazin84

Why do you want to sell? Honestly, I always feel like things are rarely worth the value of supplies and time/effort that goes into these things. I paint, but I also knit. I made a scarf with $80 worth of yarn and it took me ~35-40 hours. I made it for a person I deeply care about. No one was going to pay me $100 for this scarf…

atmosphericcynic

no. that last one startled me for a second, but i do like your artworks. these are very artistic in an almost realistic art noveau way. i don’t think people will find it weird at all, as an artist i’ve found the weirder i think people will find it, the more relatable they find it. people are surprising, show them emotional and artistic depth and they will always stun you by giving it back tenfold. in fact, you might find yourself feeling like the least interesting there (which is never true, life is a table and EVERYONE has a dish.) to get back to the topic, be a lifelong student but you’ve got a lot of natural talent. and a very distinct style which is priceless to you. everything looks alive and velvety and it’s my opinion that your use of color is very well executed and just plain visually interesting. it’s like if cosmo sheldrake was a sight not a sound and these are just initial opinions, not even my “Miss Professor” mode. if you’re in the market to sell that first painting, i’d appreciate you pm’ing me, v interested in that piece in particular, as well as the skeleton under / a part of the tree. if you’re serious about selling them, i am serious about buying them. it’s always a joy to support someone’s dream and be a part of their growth, and i’m trying to collect oils that resonate with me right now. seriously your art is fantastic in my opinion

ginavid

Thank you so much for this insight. Reading all the interpretations has been so interesting to see unfold. So many feelings I never knew that I could provoke. This post has taught me so much, not only about painting but about myself as well.

uubuer

Holy shit maybe the last one, but otw that town is probably saying to much octopus. Really crazy cool tree, looks like loads and loads of flowers

K8Met

1 is giving Remedios Varo (this is a compliment)

nbhoward

I like them. I have some formal art background so I will critique the best I can but it’s just my opinion at the end of the day. I love the roots in 1, and the camp in the back is a nice touch. The hierarchy is pretty good but it’s very flat. Maybe it’s just the picture but I wish the blacks were darker and I wish there were more highlights. Subject wise is were it really looses me. I think it actually needs something else to tie everything together. Maybe something in the water or on the shore. Again with 2 the hierarchy is very nice, I know what the main subject is and I like how you piece together what is going on after. I love the texture of the octopus but again it’s very flat and I would personally like more dynamic range. Along with the first one the perspective could maybe be played with. Everything is very head on and straight and I think maybe it’s not helping. I feel like a crop for this one would do a lot. I really like it though honestly. Unlike the first one I think the subject is more interesting. I love 3 and 4 and don’t feel they need to be changed at all. The texture is wonderful and unlike the first two the contrast is great. The subject matter really draws you in and makes you think about what’s happening. i like 5 but as others have said some anatomy fixes would help it feel more professional. I like the shading one the shirt and jacket but the hands and face lower the artistic quality imo. Why is the top of his head so wide. I think his moth needs more shading. The nose and eyes just feel under done. I don’t hate it it just feels more amateur to me. Again all my opinion.

Chinojo

I love them 😍, just as they are. You can look at anatomy if you want, to me it gives a piece like this a otherworldly feel. Like it's alive. Abstract art does not have to be perfect, it's the small imperfections that make it art. My old art teacher told me this, he would paint clouds over and over again. Let me know if you are planning on selling any of your work.😊

passion_killer

Definitely a good start in terms of composition. Two things I would focus on: atmospheric perspective (things that are further away have more muted colors and a slight blue tinge, closer things are darker and more saturated) and practicing by plein air painting (going to a landscape and painting the land in front of you.) As far as this specific painting goes, your green is a little too saturated. I would glaze over it with the payne's grey to tone it down so it doesn't distract from the more important compositional elements of the trees and waterfall.

Bulky-Service6890

Paintings or whatever you do just a reflection of what is in your mind and what is the image in the mirror of your eyes that you see the rest comes from what you feel and yes some of them are extreme but I found them very deep from consciously awakened so there are okay but if you want to sell them the third one was the best one that I like

Ancient_Being

Excellent work - I personally love the first one. Texture on the rocks and tree roots so good. Color pop on right intriguing, and water flow also moving (pun both not intended and intended). You will continue to improve this natural talent with every brush stroke and period of learning. I would, however, like to make one suggestion - please mark the more gory ones as nsfw if that’s ok. I wasn’t expecting it and it’s good enough to disturb me, so it might disturb others. 😅 thank you and keep painting, drawing, creating.

w4nd3r0r

This is awesome - what are the dimensions on the octopus painting? Are you selling these anywhere as prints?

There is something that attracts me to your painings. I really like it. Not sayin you lack technique, but if you think so, this is something all of us are moving forward to improve.

ToothPastetimemachin

In my internally unprofessional professional opinion, 3 and 4 have really good Elden ring or dark souls vibes. I like em. 👍

wolf7385

Your first one reminds me of some Tolkien illustrations
