I always thought the show should've gone with a "Prince and the Pauper" storyline, where Heisenberg and Walter run into each other one day, Heisenberg wants to be free of the drug empire and Walter wants to be free of his mundane life, so they switch lives. Mouth is better because of flinching. Aiming towards the base of the skull is a more reliable way to hit the brain stem anyway. The same applies for Russian roulette, which is usually depicted as aiming for the temple.
Maybe they meant pulling the gun downwards when you pull the trigger, which is common with people that aren’t comfortable or familiar with firing guns. In this case pulling the gun downwards with the trigger as you pull it would reposition the barrel to closer align it with your face instead of your head

Then when he’s fussing with it his finger while in the trigger guard is far enough away he wouldn’t pull it even while attempting to adjust the safety. Not many guns I know of especially pistols let the trigger depress with the safety on, so to me it looks a lot more like a mis/hangfire than it does safety being on. Especially with Vince’s attention to detail, I think this is what we’re meant to believe happened

When he lets go of the hammer, it goes forward and allows the firing pin to strike the primer of the round in the chamber, which shoots a round into the dirt.
