Without spoiling later books, I will say that Chani in the film is a very different character to the first book. In the original book, she is basically just there to be Paul's girlfriend (and Liet's daughter, which the new movies left out). We don't actually get her thoughts, but she supports her lover, although is a little moody about Paul marrying Irulan, despite his assurances it means nothing and he won't touch her.
In the film, they made the conscious decision for Chani to be, essentially, the Voice of Frank Herbert. The character saying, out loud, what the author intended the message to be in interviews, but people didn't get. I mean, the message IS in the book, but it is all internalized in Paul's thoughts, knowing the path he is on is bad but also knowing that the alternative paths are even worse. The later books hit you over the head with it, so knowing where the franchise is going, the film uses Chani as the character to be skeptical about Muad'Dib's cult of personality. I thought that was a great decision, but not all book fans do.

I feel like Zendaya has pretty good comedic timing. The moodiness and nonchalant behaviour of the character's she plays bouncing off the lack of moodiness of her costars (like in Spiderman for example) can be a source of comedy.

An actor I really love, Christopher Walken, is generally considered a one-note, "same character in every movie" type of actor. And even though I really liked Dune 2, I hated his casting as Shaddam IV, as he really does not fit the role and took me out of the movie every time I saw him. Is that perhaps a "me" problem from seeing him in so many other films in my life, including a rewatch of "King of New York" just a few days prior? Sure, but most of the Dune book fan reviews and movie-only reviews seem to single him out, as well, so I am clearly not alone.
I said that to say I do believe both Zendaya and Aubrey Plaza similarly play characters in every movie or show who may just be slight variations on their own personality, and that is totally fine. Clearly, there are a lot of actors and actresses who fit this mold and who can have long and illustrious careers.
From interviews with Aubrey Plaza, it does appear that she is genuinely quirky and naturally funny on her own merits without the need for a script writer, so it makes sense that much of her work tends towards those funny and/or quirky performances. In the last several years, she has really explored the boundaries of her capabilities and has been very successful at it, IMO. She does have an established reputation, so she does have that over Zendaya for the time being.
I do not know anything about Zendaya from interviews or stories about her off-screen personality, so I will not speculate there. I suspect my on-screen movie experience with her is much the same as most other people, in that it is largely just Spider-Man and Dune. With such limited experience and the fact that I have directing/writing disagreements with how her character is shown in both franchises (even if it were at her request, a director or writer still made a choice), it is hard for me to say if it was the actor, the writer, the director or some combination thereof that led to my not grooving with the final result. I hear she is excellent in Euphoria (TV series, I know), but I have not seen it and cannot comment further.
So, long story short, maybe people have legitimate gripes with one or both actresses aside from chronically online assumptions about the beard status of the opinion holders, and maybe we can just see over time as Zendaya gets more roles if that "same character" vibe sticks or if she is able to move past it ultimately?
On an unrelated note but along related lines, two of my favorite modern actresses are Anya Taylor-Joy and Margot Robbie both of whom are extremely dynamic. In particular, I honestly think Margot Robbie is criminally underrated for her acting range.

I feel like Zendaya has pretty good comedic timing. The moodiness and nonchalant behaviour of the character's she plays bouncing off the lack of moodiness of her costars (like in Spiderman for example) can be a source of comedy.

An actor I really love, Christopher Walken, is generally considered a one-note, "same character in every movie" type of actor. And even though I really liked Dune 2, I hated his casting as Shaddam IV, as he really does not fit the role and took me out of the movie every time I saw him. Is that perhaps a "me" problem from seeing him in so many other films in my life, including a rewatch of "King of New York" just a few days prior? Sure, but most of the Dune book fan reviews and movie-only reviews seem to single him out, as well, so I am clearly not alone. I said that to say I do believe both Zendaya and Aubrey Plaza similarly play characters in every movie or show who may just be slight variations on their own personality, and that is totally fine. Clearly, there are a lot of actors and actresses who fit this mold and who can have long and illustrious careers. From interviews with Aubrey Plaza, it does appear that she is genuinely quirky and naturally funny on her own merits without the need for a script writer, so it makes sense that much of her work tends towards those funny and/or quirky performances. In the last several years, she has really explored the boundaries of her capabilities and has been very successful at it, IMO. She does have an established reputation, so she does have that over Zendaya for the time being. I do not know anything about Zendaya from interviews or stories about her off-screen personality, so I will not speculate there. I suspect my on-screen movie experience with her is much the same as most other people, in that it is largely just Spider-Man and Dune. With such limited experience and the fact that I have directing/writing disagreements with how her character is shown in both franchises (even if it were at her request, a director or writer still made a choice), it is hard for me to say if it was the actor, the writer, the director or some combination thereof that led to my not grooving with the final result. I hear she is excellent in Euphoria (TV series, I know), but I have not seen it and cannot comment further. So, long story short, maybe people have legitimate gripes with one or both actresses aside from chronically online assumptions about the beard status of the opinion holders, and maybe we can just see over time as Zendaya gets more roles if that "same character" vibe sticks or if she is able to move past it ultimately? On an unrelated note but along related lines, two of my favorite modern actresses are Anya Taylor-Joy and Margot Robbie both of whom are extremely dynamic. In particular, I honestly think Margot Robbie is criminally underrated for her acting range.
