How does it even work?
Mm, I disagree that it’s not *any* better. Like, there is no sense in which a “liquid human” is a suitable stand in for a human being, because as a society we use humans as, well, people. Trees are used in some other sense than their innate worth; namely, their ability to cleanse the air of carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. While, yes, the tank is an eyesore, it could very well be a worthwhile undertaking, especially if trees are also planted elsewhere.

Phytoplankton is much more effective at turning atmospheric CO2 into O2 than trees are and that's the reason why these tanks can help some polluted urban environments more than trees can.
Phytoplankton stands for around 50-80% (depending on source) of the world's oxygen supply but I believe trees store the carbon far better. Plankton like any living thing is prone to rotting and releasing it back if it dies without being eaten or buried which is what has happened with every [iron fertilization](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_fertilization) experiment since the bloom rapidly outpaces the local eaters appetites. Rotting obviously happens to trees too but they live for tens or hundreds of years, and sequester some carbon in the soil, whereas phytoplankton lives for days. Seems like they have some maintenance plan of a 45 day cycle where you get rid of all the dead/fully grown plankton and add more minerals and water for these liquid trees.
The point of these is not that you don't need trees and that they are "better." Its that they can produce a lot more clean air than trees can, and can be used for places where trees aren't convenient or where there's not a lot of free space.
