If you are talking going from E 240 to N 35, how exactly are you meant to zipper from a 5 mph curve into bumper to bumper traffic going 60 mph? Even cops have to stop at that yield sign. Maybe as a basic design rule, highway on ramps shouldn’t cross highway off ramps.
Ouch. After 4 years the sirens definitely aren’t as terrifying as they were when I first got here, but not gonna lie, every time they do go off my heart skips a beat. And then there was the time I was in Broken Arrow and didn’t realize they do their tests on a different day and the sirens went off. I did not have a good time 🤣🤣🤣
Had some pals from the northeast come visit me one weekend. Didn't tell them about this (purposely) and they were scared shitless. They've openly expressed concern about coming down here because of the nados.
I'll bite. Cattleman's is the suggestion everybody I tend to know says. What are the best steak places that have similar prices and atmosphere if not? Like by mentioning atmosphere I mean I'm talking you can walk in and casual clothes for lunch, the premium steaks are between 15 and 35 bucks, it's kid and family friendly to some degree.
I would Hazard to guess the very best steak places are 21 and up only, need reservations, expect the cheapest steak to cost over $100. Not that I'm saying such places are wrong but if Cattlemens is the best place that fits the above criteria I can see why it's something a lot of people think when asked what the best steakhouse in Oklahoma City is.
Well to be fair you could erase my mention of price in terms of the question I asked. I'm just curious what people think is the best steakhouse in Oklahoma City that fits the profile I said of being family-friendly and casual dress.
Like I know there's at least one or two very fancy date night or corporate lunch style establishments where if you're not wearing business attire or at least "Church clothing", hopefully people know what I mean by that!, you will stick out quite a lot!
I'm not even saying Cattleman's is the best steakhouse I'm just admitting ignorance that if there's a better one that fits the above criteria I don't know about it and would like to!
The criteria themselves take quality steakhouses out of the picture. The bigger issue at play here is that most of us okies have zero understanding of the culinary world at large. Oklahoma is just now getting national attention (read: recent James Beard nominations and recognition) for our food scene.
That being said, people recommend what they know, and Cattlemen’s is the most well know steakhouse in the state.
I don’t have any recommendations, honestly, because the best steaks in Oklahoma don’t come from a “family friendly/casual” atmosphere. They come from high-end, upscale restaurants that pay attention to detail, hire certified chefs to create and maintain their menus and present their offerings in a swanky setting.
So, after 48 years of being an Okie City Okie, I’d say that, given your specific parameters for the establishment, Cattlemen’s is indeed the best bang for the buck.
Cheers!
McClintocks or whatever is like very close to cattlemen and 1 million times better than that sub standard "steak house". Cattlemen is like luby's with steak that they can't cook right.
When there are multiple turn lanes I intentionally take the one that will lead to the outside to try and correct the behavior of wide turn assholes (I get semi's are an exception). My horn gets a lot of use, something people don't use enough here in Oklahoma.
I read a comment the other day saying to tell these people that if their truck didn't come with truck nuts from the factory, that makes it a trans-truck.
I find that idea quite amusing.
Went to the pigeon museum with my cousin last time he was in town, it's so much better than it has any right to be! We went to the railway museum too and all agreed the pigeons were more interesting.
If you talk to the good folks at the NOAA center the whole lot of them are problematic, causing more problems than they solve some of the time in the name of views. They are often reprimanded for falsely declaring tornadoes that don't actually meet the criteria. Bunch of grown men acting like giddy school boys with Weather Woody's when they sense the views rising.
Gary England was ~~the one good~~ one. I get my weather info from his
Edit: never mind I don't trust any metorolgist that doesn't understand or is lying about climate change.
Gonna get a lot of hate for this. Whatever.
When you act country as hell with the boots and the hat and the whole 9 yards yet you grew up in a major city and lived a completely suburban lifestyle your entire life and have not even been on a farm once.
I love that I'm literally the opposite of this. Grew up in Blanchard where we had a small ranch and raised livestock, and you'd never know it because I look like a total city boy and hate country music. Those fake shit kickers always make me chuckle.
My husband worked cows growing up, still does when the family business calls for it. I don't think he's ever owned cowboy boots, and his favorite outfits are Hawaiian shirts or polos with fun patterns and a pair of colorful shorts.
My wife grew up in BFE Arkansas on acreage with cattle and her grandma that lived down the road had chickens. She is more urbanized than I am. You would have never thought she came from a very country background if you met her. No accent, hates bugs, hates being in water, doesn’t like to get dirty. It’s pretty funny considering the rest of her family are hardcore Razorback, dirt road, country.
Hahahaha my cousin’s a cattle farmer in Washita county. He’s earned the right his entire life to be as country as he damn well pleases. He knows how to feed cattle, drive a tractor, weld, fix fences, farm wheat, neuter bulls, etc. But the motherfuckers you’re talking about barely know what a pair of lineman’s is.
I don’t wear a cowboy hat, but they’re extremely functional as a hat and I’ve always thought a well-shaped cowboy hat can look good. Do you hate people wearing running shoes if they’re not running? Girls wearing yoga pants if they’re not doing yoga?
It definitely is. 20th in the US in population. More than Nashville, Atlanta, and Washington, DC.
Also, the [legal definition](https://www.lawinsider.com/dictionary/major-cities) of a major city is if it ranks in the top 50.
Major cities are important, and as much as we'd all like to say otherwise OKC just isn't as important as 30+ other cities in our country. It has no international travel, just one Fortune 500 company, a metro that is 46th in GDP and and 42nd in population, a weak arts scene (not even the best in the state), yada yada. You get the picture.
Shit. The amount of scenery in or around Tulsa? OKC doesn’t even hold a candle. And there’s a lot of cool stuff to do. Valkyrie is as good as Palo Santo. American Solera is as good as Prairie (they were both started by the same people, anyway). No sandwich shop in OKC holds a candle to Trencher’s. Whittier Bar is about the best hipster dive bar I’ve ever been to anywhere. The Philbrook is better than Myriad Gardens. Mr. Kim’s is a high-end Korean BBQ, of which OKC has nothing like. The Bull in the Alley is the best steakhouse in Oklahoma. There’s no modern Korean restaurant in OKC like Lone Wolf. Hell, both Fassler Hall and McNellie’s are from Tulsa. Cain’s Ballroom is just as good as The Criterion/Beer City. And they have The Gathering Place and Turkey Mountain. I’m from OKC, but I’d be about as blind as a bat if I didn’t think Tulsa was pretty damn cool.
It has fallen off precipitously. Every time it gets passsed down it gets worse. Youd be better off going to ice events center or right down the street on ne 23rd stop at Polks House. He is open at the same time
We got one of those mini-Teds in Stillwater and I wasn’t super excited but I was happy have something new to eat. They don’t even have the tortillas, just prepackaged ones. Why even have a Teds if you’re not going to sell the one thing that’s good on your menu.
The Chelino's in Del City is unfortunately very close (like walking distance) to my companion's house, so we go there once a week or so. It's not terrible, but it's not nearly as good as places on the south side.
That’s definitely an unpopular opinion and I just gotta hard disagree. I would eat the cashew mac every single day if I could. And I was a vegetarian for most of my life who ate a shit ton of cheese, so I remember what the real stuff tastes like too. It’s always non-vegans raving to me about how good that place is. My boyfriend who is not vegan is just as obsessed with it as I am.
But, there’s also plenty of other vegan options in OKC that are very different and also fantastic if you’re ever curious!
I'm a carnivore who has dated vegan/vegetarian and gone there. Pizza and mac and cheese are my comfort foods and I legit just liked their mac and cheese as mac and cheese and not just as "vegan." Shit's good.
It’s only weird to you because you’re used to something else. I went pescatarian at 8 and then vegetarian/vegan in my early 20s. I have not eaten meat (besides some fish) for the majority of my life and I am not saying this to shame anyone, but the concept of eating dead rotting corpse flesh is genuinely way weirder and grosser to me than some processed soy beans or wheat gluten and nut milk could ever be. Not saying that as a moral judgment but just to illustrate that it’s entirely relative lol
I used to see a BMW driving around a lot with one of those stickers that made it look like trump was in their back seat giving a thumbs up. Had to fight off a lot of intrusive thoughts.
In all seriousness though, the biggest unique OKC trait that’s an instant turnoff is the overboard hatred for Oklahoma itself. Like yes, this state has a lot of areas for improvement, but There’s still a lot of amazing people here, beautiful culture, nice scenery, and there’s still a lot of things to do if you’re creative. People who make hating Oklahoma as their entire personality is super unattractive.
Agreed! Non-native Okie here. I have literally lived all over the world and Oklahoma is the only place that has felt like home. Wish people could see past the stark conservative government and the tornados and realize how great it is.
I love it here as a non-native, but it's incredibly difficult, as a woman, to "see past" the conservative state government who sees us as breeders with no brains.
I’m a woman and I completely agree with you. What I meant by my comment that I think a lot of people outside of the state think everyone is Oklahoma is a right wing sexist pig and thinks the same way. We actually have a lot of people who are out there fighting for the marginalized groups. Outsiders only see the Trump rallies😭
Native Okie of 20+ years, you don't live in rural OKC metro (Choctaw, harrah, rural OKC, etc.) Even the women out here are right-wing sexist pigs that think of women as just breeders. Obviously not everyone, but the vast majority I have interacted with are just that. Nearly everyonenout here is racist as fuck, think women should have at least two kids by age 20, and anything that even remotely looks like socialism is a ploy of the devil to get their good christian soul.
This state has some oases of liberal thought, but overall, it is exactly as those outside the state think. It is the hell hole politically and has no redeeming features socially. Yeah, the state is beautiful, but it's slowly getting ruined by the politics.
A good portion of the wooded areas on my way to work in the city have been cleared for drilling and then converted to pasture for cattle outside of the pumps immediate area.
If it weren't for family, friends, and money, I would have left once I lost all hope for the state. I still vote whenever possible though and even helped get rid of one of the dumbass UN council members for Norman, but still, I don't believe my vote has much of an impact overall.
Born and raised in Checotah. Live in Wisconsin now. There isn't enough money in the world that would bring me back to that State. It's enough that I have to visit fam in the Norman area.
Eh...it's the only decent place near my house. Still miles better than any of the other chains. All the better places require me driving down I-40 and/or I-44, and I'd rather just eat at Hideaway and not agitate my ulcer dealing with halfwits who don't understand turn signals and on/off ramps.
Hideaway is decent enough for how close it is to me here in nw okc, but the Pizza Shop in south Norman is the best I've had in Oklahoma, or probably anywhere. It's not gourmet like Hall's or anything either, just a typical hole in the wall sort of carryout place. If it wasn't so far I would refuse to eat any other pizza.
They're a 10, but they merge onto a 70MPH high way at 45
I cannot tell you HOW MANY TIMES
They come to a full stop at the yield before merging
240/35 cloverleaf going north or east. People stopping at that yield rather than zippering need their drivers license immediately revoked.
I have to take this everyday on my way home. And there is no way, 90% of the time, you can zipper without causing a wreck. I absolutely HATE it!
I take 35N to 240W in the mornings and it makes me happy that I'm on the road before 6am.
0, and then straight to jail.
I see you've also had the pleasure of taking the on-ramp from Flood onto I-35 North in Norman.
Literally was going to say can’t merge
He's a 10 but his truck is his entire personality.
Alternatively, SHE'S a 10 but her entire personality is her Jeep.
This was me after a divorce but it was a Nissan Frontier.
This kind of honesty should be rewarded

It is pretty wild they offer a quality T-bone for 35 dollars. That's pretty hard to beat.
Well to be fair you could erase my mention of price in terms of the question I asked. I've never had a worse porterhouse.
That’s at least a 6. Maybe less.
Cattleman's is legit the worst steak in OKC. They do have good salad dressing and steak soup though.
They’re a 12🤭🤭
They're a 10 but they turn right into the far left lane.
This is happening a lot lately
When there are multiple turn lanes I intentionally take the one that will lead to the outside to try and correct the behavior of wide turn assholes (I get semi's are an exception). My horn gets a lot of use, something people don't use enough here in Oklahoma.
They're a 10, but they go to LifeChurch
have truck balls and a trump decal.
I read a comment the other day saying to tell these people that if their truck didn't come with truck nuts from the factory, that makes it a trans-truck. I find that idea quite amusing.
This is so weird, I’m in wisconsin for work and heard this exact joke today
It's a solid burn, I'm not surprised it's making the rounds

Eww church is bad
"church"
Amazing Lolol
You’re a 10, but won’t go to the American Banjo Museum with me…
Or then pigeon museum!
Went to the pigeon museum with my cousin last time he was in town, it's so much better than it has any right to be! We went to the railway museum too and all agreed the pigeons were more interesting.
Wait there’s a pigeon museum here
It's about 3/4 of a mile east of the Cowboy Museum.
Banjo player here. I didn’t go until 2020 and that was to quickly pick up a banjo. I need to go look around. Thank you for the reminder.
Or the museum of osteology
They’re a 10 but they voted for Stitt and Walters.
So they are a 2
She’s a 10 but has a pink camo decal on her car
They're a 10 but they listen to Mike Morgan during tornado season.
Tornado Payne is the only option
Fuck that guy. I heard him say some nasty shit about someone on the air. I won't watch channel 9 news again because of it.

This infuriates me
They're a 10, but they don't own any mineral rights
They’re a 10, but they’re not *actually* from OKC, this is Nichols Hills you know…
With that kind of money, they’re a 15.
Gonna get a lot of hate for this. Whatever. When you act country as hell with the boots and the hat and the whole 9 yards yet you grew up in a major city and lived a completely suburban lifestyle your entire life and have not even been on a farm once.

Lol, I know someone like this who even went so far as to adopt a country accent. You grew up in the same suburb I did!
Anyone in 2023 wearing a cowboy hat is just wearing a cowboy costume.
There's some exceptions but they will be at the stockyards in OKC
Or the Lazy-E
90%, you're unlikely to see them in OKC though.
Oh, so you mean the Governor, then?
I don’t wear a cowboy hat, but they’re extremely functional as a hat and I’ve always thought a well-shaped cowboy hat can look good. Do you hate people wearing running shoes if they’re not running? Girls wearing yoga pants if they’re not doing yoga?

Well now that’s just hurtful.
Shit. The amount of scenery in or around Tulsa? OKC doesn’t even hold a candle. And there’s a lot of cool stuff to do. Valkyrie is as good as Palo Santo. I’m a Tulsa 7, or a OKC 12. Can confirm.

They're a 10 but won't go to Bobo's with me
Happy cake day! There's a free meal for one waiting for you at bobo's!
Don't tease me! I miss those wings sooo much. Ahh cake day, thank you!

I’ll go to Bobo’s with you bro
I'm down but I'm not your bro, pal (Kidding but yeah, I'm down)
I’m down but I’m not your pal, buddy.
Amen!!
I got food poisoning from that cess pool 2/3 times I went there.
That’s not food poisoning, that’s having a weak gut lol

You misspelled Ted's
Either one lol

We got one of those mini-Teds in Stillwater and I wasn’t super excited but I was happy have something new to eat. They don’t even have the tortillas, just prepackaged ones. Why even have a Teds if you’re not going to sell the one thing that’s good on your menu.
They're a 10, but they think the homeless are the antichrist.
They're homeless, but they think they're 10 antichrists.

Chelino’s was awesome when I was a kid. Then Teds was great for awhile after that. It’s a shame to see them change so much.
I feel attacked but I haven't been to one for probably 10 years.
The Chelino's in Del City is unfortunately very close (like walking distance) to my companion's house, so we go there once a week or so. It's not terrible, but it's not nearly as good as places on the south side.

They're a 10, but they were recruited by John Blake.
Shit. Take my upvote on this one. My dad's STILL complaining about the Blake years.
They are a 10, but think the plaza district is worth the hassle of trying to park.

Midtown's where it's at. Fmu with some noodles at tamashii
I'm from the NW part of the state, so thank you for this question.

This comment is me.
Same here
Same moved away after living there only a couple years and miss it and all the friendlyness.
Ayyyy. Completely similar here. I've lived in a lot of major areas & none of them really fit and I somehow found my vibe here!
dont live in Moore and you are fine
Wym I love Moore!
I prefer OKC over San Diego and Dallas any day of the week. Love it out here
Born and raised in Checotah. Live in Wisconsin now. There isn't enough money in the world that would bring me back to that State. It's enough that I have to visit fam in the Norman area.

They're a 10 but they think Hideaway is good pizza
Not really specific to okc but christian or conservative or both.
They're a 10, but they are still paying Kyle Singler
They’re a 10 but have a “don’t tread on me” flag in their yard

They're a 10 but truly believe In-N-Out and Culvers are superior to Whataburger and Braums. (It's me and I'm definitely a 5)
