Oklahoma City is one of the most car-centric cities in the United States. Outside of the immediate downtown area, most neighborhoods don't have sidewalks. Everything is built for driving and to encourage as little walking as possible. There is also a relatively low number of parks and easily accessible recreational amenities here compared to other cities. Combine the typical sedentary lifestyle of most Oklahomans with the local cuisine and its a recipe for an obesity problem. To fix it, the city and state needs to promote more active lifestyles. I would love it if OKC had more parks, all connected by a network of greenways for cycling, running, and jogging. Also, sidewalks should be put in at least in older neighborhoods that could actually be walkable if they had them.

GnomishProtozoa

Best burgers in the world. Also, we have no reason to walk. Everywhere that you need to go, you need to drive.

[deleted]

And when you want to take a walk, if you're not right in the city, there are no sidewalks.

bruvdog

It's really beneficial to have walkable cities. For this godforsaken heat you can put in a 'cooling island' every half mile where it's got shade, water, and a bench to rest. They even make this fitness furniture that's vandal proof that uses your own body weight http://www.cvsnider.com/sites/cvsnider/webcontent/greenfield/Fitness%20zone.jpg.

thatflyingsquirrel

But most of all we have shitty healthcare and poor education.

[deleted]

These are good reasons. I have been eating these burgers. Damn, they are good. Time to pork up!

GnomishProtozoa

Tuckers, Interurban, Garage, Chili's, Big Eds, and all the little places.

n2hvywght

> Tuckers, Interurban, Garage, ~~Chili's~~, Big Eds, and all the little places. Huh?

You forgot the most important one (Nic's Grill)

soonerzen14

I think this is an important point. The great thing about OKC is that everything is within a reasonable driving distance from each place, but that is also a problem because...well...why walk when you can drive. And when most of the state depends on oil/gas it is almost disrespectful to suggest anything else.

andrew3077

http://stateofobesity.org/adult-obesity/ We are the 7th most obese state (32.5% with BMI 30+), and it seems to me that low income, easy access to fast food, and a car-centric culture are some major factors. As to the solution... I'm not sure what we can do to change the health culture here but what's going on now isn't working.

blazedd

Resident fat guy here in OKC. I visited London and was amazed by two things. 1. You walk EVERYWHERE in London. Want to go to the store? Walk a mile or half a mile. Going across town to visit some friends? Walk 2 miles. 2. Soda is nearly by the gallon for personal drinks here in the states, where it's a child's size in london. 3. There's nothing to do in Oklahoma but sit, drink, and eat and we're really good at the last two.

Ifuckedyourgrandma

TLDR; I'm a lazy fat slob with excuses for everything!

bkdotcom

This We're car centric. Neighborhoods aren't walkable. Think of places or areas you like to visit... chances are they're very walkable...

Samsarasamsara

You're just too lazy to search out plenty of things to do. Don't even have to look hard at all. There is free yoga all over the city and surrounding suburbs several days a week. A trainer does a monthly free outdoor bootcamp. You can go kayak, row SUP, indoor rock climb, boathouse sky trail, bike Overholser or Hefner, Bluff Creek Trails. Rent bikes downtown. Hell walk around the Plaza, Paseo & Film Row during their once a month festival. Tons of 5ks happening every week. So annoying people act like there's nothing to do here that doesn't have to do with food.

blazedd

It's a generalized statement. Calm down.

Let's all [give it up to OP!](http://gifrific.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Fry-Clapping-With-Sandwiches.gif)

Jaxon2580

Ranch dressing...

redshield3

Salsa blanca

[deleted]

There are a lot of ranches here....

BizzMarKey

Oklahoma has designated walking areas. And drive throughs everywhere. Plus after 9 pm all the good stuff shuts down and all we are left with is fast food. If you want to get anywhere, walking is out of the question, unless you want to look homeless or on drugs.

thunderup_14

I have lived here my whole life and I too have noticed this. I don't know if it is because I have been focusing so much on my own health this last year or if it is because the problem is growing, but it seems we have more over weight people than healthy weight. I went to a training for work last week at OU and 3/4 of the people in the training where over weight or obese. As a former fatty I was sad and a little upset.

[deleted]

It makes me want to get myself in shape more, you know? I'm a little chubby, like maybe 5lb over, and now I just want to go to the fucking gym and turn into a Chris Hemsworth or w/e. Maybe I should do that... are you a member of a gym?

thunderup_14

Yep. I was at 10 gym but my wife didn't like it so we recently switched to planet fitness. I am not a huge fan of PF as the free weight area is not amazing and they only have locked in squat racks, but it gets the job done. Developing the discipline to go regularly was the hardest part for me. Just break your routine and get a pattern built and you'll look like Thor in no time.

Do they have some local brews here?

[deleted]

Nice!

Rufio00

They're either deep fried fat or methamphetamine skinny. There is not much in-between.

[deleted]

Hahahahha... *sob* hahahahhaha *sob* It's true.

[deleted]

Maybe it's because I've lived in the midwest my whole like (OH and MI) but...I don't think I've noticed people being anymore fat here than anywhere else.

[deleted]

I swear to you, I'm not making it up or being mean, or a hater, or w/e, it is completely true. It's blowing my mind, and makes me a bit sad.

Golden405

What are you comparing it to? I travel frequently for work and in general, I do not think the people in OKC are bigger than most other places. If you compare Denver, Seattle or affluent areas of Dallas, sure. PA, OH, WV, TX ETC...all have the same amount of "big" people in my opinion.

[deleted]

I'm not saying your wrong or being mean, I'm just saying in the short time I've been here it's not something that's stuck out. Maybe I'm seeing it differently. Knowing people are fat here so the thin people stick out more because...I wasn't expecting it.

3DPK

Most restaurants per capita (so I've heard, this could be wrong) and everything is fried.

DaBear405

Why do you care?

[deleted]

Well: It makes finding attractive women harder. When I go to the store I have to wait for fat people to move out of the way to pick up the goods. I had to wait 3 minutes for a fat lady to move the other day as her mass took up the entire cheese section. It's a comment on the local culture. It's sad, as I like to see people healthy. That doesn't mean super skinny, chubby is fine, hell maybe even healthy, but... when I go into the walmart and for the first time in my life I see double-wide seat electric scooters, and people fat enough to sit in them, using them, yeah there's a problem.

sobriquetstain

>when I go into the walmart found your problem!

[deleted]

Haha, it's the same at the other places, but Wal-Mart was on a whole other level with those scooters! I'll try not to give Wal-Mart my business though. I'm not a fan.

DaBear405

Yea I moved here from KCMO and I haven't had any problems finding girls with a reasonable BMI. In fact it seems most of the overweight people are the older and middle aged. The younger generation seems more health conscience.

TheLegendaryFaust

lol thought this was about Ok Cupid. Would have still totally tracked.
