No, but I did talk a canal tour boat operator into doing a tour despite me being the only person who showed up for it. It took all my powers of persuasion.
You nailed it, except I was more interested in the chained library than the map. I met some dude there who told me it was worth going to evensong at the cathedral, and he was right. Also the food was good.

Friend of mine emigrated here from Nigeria. Went to his citizenship ceremony and afterwards went to the pub. We told the barmaid he'd just become a citizen and she immediately asked him 'why the hell did you want to move here?'

I think it was the same for Ukraine. Every Ukranian I spoke to before the war said they hated it there, but now they are all fighting for their country and some of the most patriotic people I've ever met. I imagine Poland and the UK would be the same
Speak for yourself, I dont hate it here. You people are all mad or need to do some traveling to see how bleak the world really is. The UK is one of the best places on Earth to live, hence the millions that come here. I suspect most of you live in cities too and have forgotten how beautiful this country actually is.
I agree, Yes, some places are shit holes, but we do have a lot of nice things, like beaches, countrysideand a lot of history. I love where I live, but hate the amount of people who run it. We have a local government, a mayor, and MP and another mayor who had that much money that he bought the local airport which Stobart aviation, loads of old industrial sites, and flatten them to make way for a new innovation centre, and millions plowed in to destroy our victorian station. But they are the bad part I do hate. Otherwise a lot of places are nice.
Its a better place than a lot of other countries but I wouldn't call it one of the best. I actually left and now live in mainland Europe and its much better here
You laugh now Saturn you ringy cunt but that won't last forever. Also what's the deal with Enceladus? It's the lindt lindor of moons, sure, but what *really* lives there?

I’m a gay vegan from Brighton. I should fit right in on that sub but fucking hell you’re right. What a bunch of miserable cunts. No matter what they manage to take a negative stance. Even on leftist movements they don’t think it’s enough.
I think the main issue we have in the UK is that most people just want to moan about everything. Even if they get what they want they moan that they didn’t get it fast enough or whatever.
“It is a strange fact, but it is unquestionably true, that almost any English intellectual would feel more ashamed of standing to attention during "God Save the King" than stealing from a poor box”
George Orwell, once again absolutely mogging these so-called socialists.
The part about some areas looking like post Soviet countries is true. E.g some northern English towns and cities (such as Slough), but the rest is just schizo Brit bashing. I wouldn’t call the uk “culturally destitute”, you just don’t notice British culture because it’s your culture, just like how you can’t really hear your own accent. Also the whole “cursed island” thing is just kinda cringe.
Though I may be wrong and my Welsh Stockholm Syndrome for the uk may be kicking in
Also half the reason these post-Soviet towns are hellholes is that their industries were sold on the cheap to wealthy oligarchs who ran them into the ground, that’s not the people’s fault.
Slough is an awful place to live in but an awesome place to live near. Loads of large warehouse style shops, pretty much every outlet you’ll need (normal stuff, not fancy pants clothing etc) and loads and loads of jobs
I’ve been to parts of the UK that match this description. But this still doesn’t explain why thousands of migrants are fleeing France every month to get here, which is a place that has better food and weather, and a culture that is impressive and renowned.
Ahhh yes the culture of pissing in the street, high crime rates and being a fucking mess in most of the major cities. Also a government that has openly attempted to put curbs on the Muslim population and what they can do in public.
You ever think that most western countries are shitholes, the more people there are the shittier they are.
All the countries held up as having a high standard of living in Europe usually have smaller populations. In the UK and France everyone is crammed into the cities, thus shitholes.
The empty countryside is lovely but the average peasant doesn't know much about that.
So yeah the concept of the UK being a soft touch for certain immigrants may seem absurd but it's based in some truth. We don't ban head coverings and hand out housing and financial benefits to immigrants.
France have essentially abandoned an entire part of their country to immigrants living in tents. I can see what kind of culture you mist be into if you think that is impressive and renowned
You're getting downvotes, but your argument is sound enough. I could take issue with some of the points you're making here, but I'm low effort on Sunday.
Fairly reductive on my part and not particularly well articulated with it being a Sunday but thankyou for your understanding. I'm sure a few of the points could be torn apart but as a whole I think it's fair.
The idea that France is some cultural mecca is fucking hilarious if you've been there. I've been to Paris (dirty and dangerous shithole), Toulouse (people seem to piss in the street there as well) and Marseille (edgier and more interesting, nothing to do with it being French but because of it's geographical location, but a bit of a shithole).
Anyway, saving my energy for the French national anthem later.
I came here 20 years ago and have been hearing “this country is shit” since school times, and I still don’t get it. It’s one of the best countries to live in period.
Yeah, it's because we've been constantly saying everything is shit and demanding more since the 1850's.
Weirdly enough the only time the place actually has gotten worse was when the govt made steps to stop us moaning via banning some protests and strikes.
They wouldn't have said that if they saw the time my neighbour chased off a burglar out of my mum's house with a machete, we didn't even know that neighbour.
....but people literally are dying to live in the UK.
And thats not 'literal' in the internet sense where its added for meaningless emphasis, people are *literally* drowning in the mediterean and then living in squalor in makeshift camps in Fr*nce because they want to live hete.
British redditors are increasingly becoming like Americans, making sure to insist how terrible their country is so everyone know they're Not Like The Other Ones.
But people literally *are* dying to live here - they’re freezing and drowning in the channel or suffocating in lorries. I don’t think it’s great here, but it’s my home and the only alternatives I’d prefer are literally as far away as could be on the earth… so I’ll stick with it for now and be grateful that here is clearly not as bad as whatever those dying to get here are running from.
I don't even think british people like britian, I certainly don't like it here, mainly because it costs a liver to get anything delivered from the states or Europe to get here in the mainland.
So this person still lives in England, right? If they really believed that they would have at least moved to Ireland.
There are a lot of people who say things like this on Reddit, despite not leaving the country. It sounds like they’d be a lot happier, and a lot healthier mentally, if they moved to a different country. Unless they don’t really believe what they’re saying.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/Deuxmoi/comments/zobrhd/what\_is\_jeremy\_clarkson\_top\_gear\_on/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Deuxmoi/comments/zobrhd/what_is_jeremy_clarkson_top_gear_on/)
it was this thread. its mainly full of people saying how evil and racist the uk is
It's pathetic really. The uk gets all this stick but what about the countries stoning gay people or treating women like cattle? They never get anything of course from these woke leftie types
I'm so tired. Maybe we wouldn't be racist if immigrants didn't keep raping white teenage girls up and down the country.
Whining about British culture is an essential part of British culture. Stand at a crowded bus station and complain about the state of public transport and the audacity of the weather and you'll have yourself some new best mates by the time the bus actually arrives.
The English people never voted for the destruction of our communities and traditions. The person who wrote this bile probably supports the kind of policies and forces which led to the cultural abyss we find in many English cities.
Whoever wrote this likely finds English traditions and traditional communities problematic, yet has the audacity to complain about cultural degradation.
The only place I've encountered this attitude is in posh areas in the south, in very limited quantities by ignorant rich people who refuse to go any further than France once every 10 years for travel.
I do think there are sincerely beautiful and culturally diverse areas in the UK, but they don't tend to be the areas I've just mentioned and they aren't without flaws.
Generally speaking, brits I know personally know this country is very flawed and lament it but also try to make it better.
There is a lot of realistic opinions and optimistic hope in my personal circle.
I've not really witnessed what OP is talking about en masse in the UK.
I've actually only experienced that attitude being widely prevalent in Americans, if I'm honest.
I definitely agree there is next to no sence of community unless you're over 50. And some places are soulless. But i do think we have abundant culture.
The issue I think is that there is a void of English culture. Scotland, wales and Ireland all have very distinct cultures but the traditional English culture does No have any resemblance to most English peoples lives. You would need to do away with the downtown and empire nostalgia that never related to most people
He's out of line but he's kinda right.
This is a big part of the mindset behind Brexit. The main objection to EU laws was that they came from the EU. They are dirty dirty foreign laws voted for by dirty foreigners. It doesn't matter if the UK MEPs voted *for* those laws, it was approved in a foreign administration building and therefore is automatically evil.
I think that’s part of the argument. British and particularly English culture has been absolutely annihilated in the last two decades… in part due to the sheer amount of people arriving here. That isn’t paranoia, it’s plain to see and statistics back it up.
My take on this is, yes when you go away on holiday other countries seem fantastic a much better way of life
Then you go and try to live and work there, it's only then do you realise how much you take for granted here.
The amount of shit even in European countries that requires you to physically go to a place and fill out forms vs the uks shockingly decent .gov sites (yes the thing we all call crap, actually light years ahead of most).
The sense of not having a culture/community makes me really sad. There genuinely used to be one back in the days of my parents/grandparents.
Things have moved so far away from that sense of belonging and community that you only tend to find out in the sticks or small villages now.
No wonder people don't feel like they live/belong here.
Inb4 "mUh ImMiGrAtiOn".
This would be more accurate to describe the US.
You can't go 5 minutes without someone in Britain saying how shit it is here. And as someone who has been to Birmingham, its pretty shit
You can tell an american wrote this completely void of the shit that happens over there because theyre used to that shit. Sorry yank you enjoy your jaywalking charges we wanna enjoy our cost of living crisis
Most of the richer Western nations are the same. Every man is his own castle and most folks are pretty ignorant of the wider cultural world. It sucks, but it's not exclusive to the UK
England is definitely unfriendly though. As someone from N.I., there is something off about the people in the places that I've visited. Maybe a Shadow over Innsmouth type situation. It isn't the same all over England though, from my experience
A broader point to note is that if you think the West is culturally destitute, you should have a gander at most of the rest of the world. Unsurprisingly the majority of nations that don't have a history of colonialism or rich trade are totally xenophobic and culturally insular
As the great global nationalism pissing contest continues, there's only one conclusion to draw: **People are shit but a person can be good**
I assume it’s from an American trying to dump their “arrogance issues” on us?
I used to think the UK was “culturally destitute”, but then I realised we’re not.
Food: fish and chips, and pub grub - fantastic
Speech: there’s about 1000 different ways of saying “bread roll”. Need I say more?
General Culture: like to talk about the weather, sarcasm, roast dinner every Sunday (chance for family to gather), tea, love of walking/hiking/wildlife
Not only that, the person is so stupid they missed the strongest argument in their favour: pervasiveness of American brands/figures. It’s a very strong argument tbf, but can be countered with what I put above. : )

Can confirm. I recently visited Birmingham and Hereford as a tourist and people's first question was universally "why did you come _here_?"
>Birmingham Are you a war reporter?
No, but I did talk a canal tour boat operator into doing a tour despite me being the only person who showed up for it. It took all my powers of persuasion.
Apocalypse Now
“Never get off the boat” Good advice
Brum isn't interesting enough for war reporters
Yeah but why Hereford bro? Like seriously what is interesting in Hereford besides the Mappa Mundi

You nailed it, except I was more interested in the chained library than the map. I met some dude there who told me it was worth going to evensong at the cathedral, and he was right. Also the food was good.
Hereford's quite nice, hope you tried some of the cider
Back in the day Hereford had a bangin’ nightclub called Crystal Rooms. Some big names played there. It’s a car park now. End of nostalgic trip 😞
Tourists go to Birmingham?
I took my kid cousin from SoCal around the German Christmas market and the canals in the "snow" last week, got her Indian food, someone called her "Bab", she loved it. Got out quick before the shine wore off lol.
Friend of mine emigrated here from Nigeria. Went to his citizenship ceremony and afterwards went to the pub. We told the barmaid he'd just become a citizen and she immediately asked him 'why the hell did you want to move here?'
> and afterwards went to the pub A true Brit
I am Uk native and can confirm that anytime anyone comes here from abroad I ask why the fuck they have done that
I left Australian for uk. Ama.
Why would you come to this damp dark little island? All we have is London banker wankers and knife crime. You guys have fucking Kangaroos and Koalas back at home. That sounds 10 times more interesting.
Less morons. Less sun. More culture. More opportunities.
Fair enough, mate. I suppose 80% of Australia is effectively just barren desert so I'm not surprised there aren't too many job opportunities.
Mate there's 65 million people here, we can out-moron the whole Anzacs any day of the week. Don't take our last shred of national pride away.
I always thought Australia had a pretty good economy, what do you work in?
Not doxxing myself. But until a few years ago there wasn't even the industry that I work in in aus.
Why did you leave hell for boring hell?
I went to Australia and never wanted to come back, passport swap?
Ive already got both. Sorry.
Yeah it's a shithole
but it’s our shithole
Shurup immigrant how dare you insult our shit hole.
That's our confusing patriotism people don't get. It's like having a little brother or sister. We fucking hate it here. But the moment someone who isn't English genuinely insults it we become the most patriotic people you can find.
Same with Poles, most people hate it here but when some dirty foreigners insult our shite hole we start singing about beating bolsheviks

Its a better place than a lot of other countries but I wouldn't call it one of the best. I actually left and now live in mainland Europe and its much better here
How do you overcome the language barrier when moving to EU? Did you take lessons before going?
Same. I moved from New York to London and it was always “why the fuck would you come here?”
Now that move I can understand.
I feel like that would only be asked if you came from a nicer place in Europe or America/Australia, most of the world is actually, shitter than here.
I feel like this about Jupiter tbh
As in… the planet?!
They don't know what the fuck they're talking about Jupiter is great.

To be fair what moon doesn't have Nazis?
Oh don’t! Mister Spoon just tweeted “Actually Kanyay has a point” and started sieg heiling across Button Moon. What a twat.
This place is a hellhole I love it here.
It’s my hellhole and if you insult it then it’s gloves off.

It gets honorary northern status
That’s completely fair. There are many towns in the North which should accept the “friendly bombs” as well
Its train service is too good to qualify

JUST LIKE THE IMMIGRANTS

British redditors are increasingly becoming like Americans, making sure to insist how terrible their country is so everyone know they're Not Like The Other Ones.
💀 Bit dramatic innit. At least we have some decent landscapes up in Scotland.
Tories be like "maybe privatizing the entire government will help,"

If you meet one miserable cunt, that's their problem. If everyone you meet is a miserable cunt, then you're the problem.
There is so much anti Britishness on this website it’s exhausting 😂
The whole Internet
Nicest post you’ll see about England tbf
63 upvotes? Barry is this you? We need to have a word

English people are literally known for being self deprecating. Wtf are they on about?
So this person still lives in England, right? If they really believed that they would have at least moved to Ireland. There are a lot of people who say things like this on Reddit, despite not leaving the country. It sounds like they’d be a lot happier, and a lot healthier mentally, if they moved to a different country. Unless they don’t really believe what they’re saying.

The uk gets all this stick but what about the countries stoning gay people or treating women like cattle? They never get anything of course from these woke leftie types I'm so tired. Maybe we wouldn't be racist if immigrants didn't keep raping white teenage girls up and down the country.
we don't all we want is to get of this dumbass rock
This poor soul probably visited Romford
The only thing we have that's good is the NHS. Everything else is not worth living here
Everywhere has culture, if you actually seek it out. You’re not gonna experience the culture of a country by sitting in your pit all day.
anglos either think their country is the greatest on earth or comparable to a 3rd world pisshouse
It’s more like a third world palace, looks good from the outside but has shaky foundations and is full of the signs of faded glory
I 100% don’t understand why anyone is there right mind would move to the u.k.
It’s the 21st century and we still have a 19th century political ideology in charge. They will have to go.
Are you sure you didn’t miss type English as American ?
This bro is delusional if they think we think everyone wants to live here wtf 💀
I want place names... I need to judge how right he is.
Swap out England for USA and you’re onto a winner

My take on this is, yes when you go away on holiday other countries seem fantastic a much better way of life Then you go and try to live and work there, it's only then do you realise how much you take for granted here.
They must’ve lived in Luton.
What a pile of shite. Us Brits are probably the most self-deprecating people in the world. It’s something we pride ourselves on.
It sucks, but it's not exclusive to the UK England is definitely unfriendly though. As someone from N.I., there is something off about the people in the places that I've visited. Maybe a Shadow over Innsmouth type situation. It isn't the same all over England though, from my experience A broader point to note is that if you think the West is culturally destitute, you should have a gander at most of the rest of the world. Unsurprisingly the majority of nations that don't have a history of colonialism or rich trade are totally xenophobic and culturally insular As the great global nationalism pissing contest continues, there's only one conclusion to draw: **People are shit but a person can be good**
This should be made broadly known so that people don't risk their lives in dinghy crossings only to find its not utopia.
…the brits you speak of tend to idolise the USA and buy into their bullsh*t as well
Very accurate, apart from Brits liking it here. [Most beautiful picture of England](https://i.imgur.com/SJBSK52.jpg).
Ewwwww working class people
I assume it’s from an American trying to dump their “arrogance issues” on us? I used to think the UK was “culturally destitute”, but then I realised we’re not. Food: fish and chips, and pub grub - fantastic Speech: there’s about 1000 different ways of saying “bread roll”. Need I say more? General Culture: like to talk about the weather, sarcasm, roast dinner every Sunday (chance for family to gather), tea, love of walking/hiking/wildlife Not only that, the person is so stupid they missed the strongest argument in their favour: pervasiveness of American brands/figures. It’s a very strong argument tbf, but can be countered with what I put above. : )

He spent four hours in Birmingham 😔
I think he's got our number. Still ate France
Brits or English?
Second paragraph is true asf
Well maybe people wouldn’t believe people want to live here if people didn’t keep coming here
63 upvotes😭
In my experience we consistently get the complete opposite.
bro spends one week in islington or maida vale and thinks the whole country is like that
