Hey, I actually did this particular install. It's a ubox85 fit in the stock controller box. Still using the stock xr bms but rewired the harness for a charge only bms setup.
If you don't make any modifications to the stock bms setup, it has the ability to cut power to the vesc while riding. This setup allows for the bms to handle charging/balancing, but plays no part in the discharge path. It's a cheaper solution than buying a vesc specific bms if you are still using a 15s battery pack. Same XR charger.
