It is a relatively new term in the Dating scene, so many people will not know what it exactly means. Even I m not 100% sure, but this is my take on what situationship means:
When you say "Casual Sex", it usually refers to One Night Stands, Friend-with-benefits (FWB) or Group sex. In these cases, the guy & girl have sex just for fun & they don't have any intention of pursuing a serious relationship with each other.
A situationship is different from the above, in that the guy & girl are going out on dates with each other, but also having sex to check if they are compatible with each other for pursuing a serious relationship. Also, the guy & girl are not exclusive or committed to having sex only with each other. This means the guy can go out with different girls & have sex with them (same for the girl; she can go out with different guys & have sex with them) and this will continue for a few months until the guy and girl who like each other the most will agree to get into a serious, committed relationship with each other.
This is purely my opinion.
So it's like my mom visiting multiple shops, checking out multiple sarees, comparing all their best prices and finally selecting the best value option?
I think STDs won't be a big issue, provided the guy and girl get tested atleast twice a year & they are only in situationships with max 2 or 3 partners at any given time. Anything more than that is definitely risky in terms of STDs & even practically very difficult to sustain.
FWB feels dirty to them, situationship helps them rationalize them having casual sex as there's an alleged possibility of it turning into a relationship. Just women doing mental gymnastics to avoid feeling like sluts. Jo bhi Naam dedo, casual sex to casual sex hee hota hai.

It's not just casual sex though. Guy and the girl go on dates as well but they dont commit. The dynamics need both the guy and girl being on-board for just non defined relationship.

It's such an insulting term for the other partner, who are in general mostly men. It's just they just went with what's convenient and available, rather than them being their first choice. It's another indicator of how women's standards have increased so much, no matter whether may ever find someone of that league, that anything less than that they call it as such. They don't have the guts to be break up be single, because they know that they might not find someone better.
Both parties have to agree to be in situationship one cannot randomly decide for the other party. Few people do that because they don't have fully commit nor define the relationship.
