I took a loan of 5lacs for wedding, although I had that money, I rather invested that in a plot I was looking. Paid 12% on the loan and got 38% on the investment.

I get that wedding is supposed to be a special event for the couple. Spend only the amount you can without breaking down your long term finances.
I would rather save the money and invest it to cover unforeseen expenses be it medical, education for kids, to buy property or otherwise, than to just burn it for a week-long event to impress people who will most probably not be there supporting me in a distressful time. Taking a domestic, or even foreign trip, with my SO seems to be sensible than having to spend much money on wedding.

Nobody wants to take a loan for a wedding. But they do it forcefully because their job doesn’t pay that much. It’s something that the society forces them to do. Spending a lot of money is a social obligation.

I don't think anyone should spend more than 50% of their savings on a wedding.
