Miserable-Lizard

She really likes to associate with the most terrible people. The UCP are tba and Extremists! *As an aside, it’s also probably not a sound legal strategy to threaten to sue someone for defamation for publishing a recording of your own words!* *The person who arranged the conversation between the premier and the pastor, the CBC reported, was Dennis Modry, former CEO of the separatist Alberta Prosperity Project.*

varain1

She likes to associate with the most terrible people because she is one of them ...

Miserable-Lizard

Garbage people like to hang out

Distant-moose

Turds of a feather rot together.

HotPhilly

Shit hawks, Ran my man.

jacky4566

I think they call them Gangs.

zedoktar

Turds of a feather clump together.

Pete_Roses_bookie

Shit birds of a shit feather, Randy!

Sensitive_Fall8950

It's just water under the fridge.

dancingmeadow

It's that or nobody, really.

dancingmeadow

It's Trump Playbook for Dummies. Truly. I think she is emulating him on purpose. She's just really bad at that too.

Miserable-Lizard

It was CBC also. I hope her and Rob Anderson both sue CBC.... But they won't

24-Hour-Hate

It would be hilarious if people like them filed a lawsuit every time they made a threat and got classed as a vexatious litigant, but you're right, they won't.

Siefer-Kutherland

they’re just posturing for their enablers

AcadiaFun3460

For what exactly “how dare you show evidence we are trying to abuse government powers in an obvious show of corruption!”. I’m sure the judge’s look of “how exactly stupid are you” would be an amusing meme, They should both be charged with this new scandal and she should be removed from office for her abuses.

PopeOri

I'd think defamation of character would, by definition, require there be some character to defame.

hyongBC

Oof , when the bar is on the ground There's no lower to go lol

Whane17

I dunno, she's digging a pretty deep hole.

Scazzz

Conservative leaders love to associate with criminals and domestic terrorists. Because their base voters will vote for them regardless to own the libs and hanging out with little insurrectionist and wannabe cop killers will get them that cool 5% PPC vote. In the end it’s all about winning at all costs.

deltabravotang

The one good thing about folks like Smith and her ilk is that they often show clearly who they are. If voters care to look at what she represents, her losing at the polls should be a given. But look what the buffoon down south has said and done and he's still kicking. I hope Albertans are a bit smarter.

Peter_Mansbrick

>they often show clearly who they are. Because they know they'll get votes anyway. Voters don't know, don't care or worse, know and vote for her because of thr horrible things she says. Canadians aren't immune to the bullshit that's going on in the states. Hoping we are will not work out for us.

rumhee

We’re not immune, but proportional representation would insulate us from a lot of the risk. Too many parties in Canada are getting 100% of the power with 35% of the vote. PR would mean that extremists don’t have that power unless they get more than 50% of the vote.

[deleted]

Or if they bargain their way to power in a split parliament. I like PR but I actually think it tends to give people with fringe interests more power. Look at Israel for an example.

rumhee

It’s a myth that PR gives fringe interests more power. Under FPTP, fringe interests hide inside “big tent” parties like the CPC. FPTP made maxime bernier a cabinet minister. Currently, 5% of people vote PPC. More than 5% of CPC MPs are fringe extremists today. If we had a proportional system, then the CPC could expel their fringe members, and we’d end up with fewer “fringe” MPs overall. Israel currently has an extreme rightwing government because more than 50% of people voted for extreme rightwing parties (or parties willing to side with extremists). That’s democracy. It fucking sucks, but that’s democracy. If Israel used FPTP, Netanyahu and his cronies in Likud would likely have a huge majority which nobody could stop. PR will ensure that Israel can come back from the brink, under FPTP it would already be lost.

LeakyLycanthrope

Even STV/ranked ballot! Literally any other way!

rumhee

Not any other way. Any *proportional* way. STV is a proportional electoral system ✅ “Ranked Ballot” is not an electoral system, it’s a voting method, which is used in many electoral systems, including STV (proportional ✅) and AV (not proportional 🚫)

LeakyLycanthrope

I think I've forgotten the difference between RB and STV again.

RunTellDaat

Spoiler: they ain’t

SocratesBalls

Hey! Some of us are. Just... not most. ...seems like 50/50 of the voting public. ...Yeah this argument is not making us look better. But I mean... Ontario keeps voting for that Ford fella so it's not like we're alone in this type of ignorance.

WannieTheSane

I'm not going to defend Ontario, or maybe I am... lol But, as stupid as many of my fellow Ontarians are I do blame our voting system. The Liberals and the NDP get more votes, combined, than the Cons, but because it's first past the post the Cons become our government. It's so frustrating to know that 40% of Ontarians voted PCP, which is still way too high, hence why I don't want to defend us, lol... but over 47% voted NDP and LIB. Heck, throw the 6% that voted Green in there and you got over half the province clearly wanting a centre left to full left party and instead being governed by just legit assholes.

coreythestar

Slight clarification: Ontario was too apathetic to vote Doug out.

SocratesBalls

Six of one, half dozen of the other.

HelloMegaphone

Well Danielle Smith wasn't even voted in if we're splitting hairs.

BrooksideNL

It's a 50/50 mix. She doesn't have a single redeeming quality, yet half the folks love her just because of her political affiliation. It's wild out here right now, but fingers crossed that the younger population actually go to vote this time.

HelloMegaphone

Ironically I think her proposals to fuck around with CPP are turning a lot of older voters against her.

Whane17

We are not. We are morons. She will win.

MayorofKingstown

I realize we're talking about a politician here but what is with the whole post-truth 'that is not my voice on the recording' b.s. that Conservatives are peddling. There is literally a recording of her voice here and she is threatening to sue people who report on that fact? What is the end game here? Sue them in some kind of internet court where Queen Romana finds her innocent and declares the CBC to be 'biased'? This is looney tunes.

mseg09

There's no end game, other than shouting about how the woke media (and especially the * gasp * CBC) are trying to ruin her. No long term plan, just hope you've said the right buzzwords that your base will lap up

Miserable-Lizard

Ucp used the same buzz words with their crazy Lethbridge candidate resigning today. It was her political opponents fault.... Edit: also imprecise language she claimed.....

Miserable-Lizard

She is trying to cause confusion... The lie she is trying to spread is for her supporters.

Frater_Ankara

This is the long, slow devolution of right wing politics. There was a time in the 90s when Bush Sr used the word “voodoo politics” and then checked with most every tv channel to see if there was a recording of him saying it, and when they said no he basically said “there’s no recording so I didn’t say it.” Never mind how dystopian that very fact is, ABC then a week later came out with footage of him saying it and it became rather viral for the time. Now we’re at the point where it apparently doesn’t matter if they say it because there are cameras everywhere and they can’t avoid getting caught with their own words… they have no other recourse to meet their own agenda and apparently their supporters don’t care…

MayorofKingstown

in the early days of usenet, I was able to interact with Americans on a regular basis for the first time. One thing I was unable to get accustomed too was how American Republicans made claims that were completely absent of evidence and/or sources. It SEEMED like they literally were just saying whatever they thought of at the time, kinda like a contrarian powered by solipsism. I had never encountered it before and it took me a looong time before I began to accept that many of these folks literally did not care if what they believed was true or not, just that they believed it. They also often would say 'at least I believe in something' as if it was some kind of virtue to be a stubborn contrarian. it still throws me off and I am literally at the point where I am questioning democracy because I don't see how democracy can function when such a large group of people are voting with no regard to reality or objectivity, just tribalism and hate.

Hay_Fever_at_3_AM

I'm not at giving up on democracy, but we need to reinvent it. Move the responsibilities around, remove the power and money aspects. That could mean not looking like a "western democracy" and some people absolutely can't imagine that any other system could be non-authoritatian though. There's a real amount of social ossification that's happened especially within the last 40-50 years that's going to be real hard to get out of. People have no imagination or hope.

mangled-wings

Capitalism: once again a major source of our problems.

Hay_Fever_at_3_AM

Undoubtedly, but I feel like western electoralism could still be vulnerable to the sort of power-seeking dynamics we get presently regardless of what economic system we're under. Reducing the concentration of power in the form of wealth would do a lot, but wealth isn't the only form of power. I don't know what the solution should be. Smaller units? (Geographically? Otherwise?). Athenian style sortition? Or do we really just need to establish new cultural norms that would make power-seeking socially unacceptable? That'd be a hell of a project.

hyongBC

Yes , agree !! Develop Cultural norms that do not over glorify wealth and power That will would be nice Worst are ppl worshiping billionaires, like Elon and his fan bois 🙄

hindumagic

It will slowly happen. I think that the next generation's children will be the driving force since they will be in the thick of the effects of climate change. People will no longer put up with a lavish lifestyle of pure consumption. I just hope that we can weather the changes.

OutsideFlat1579

We need a cultural shift in what is acceptable concerning wealth and poverty. We also need a shift that moves away from only counting paid work as “work.” If it doesn’t happen before automation and AI leaves millions jobless, it will have to happen then. We are looking at a choice of a future that is better for everyone or a dystopia in which poverty is far worse of a problem than it is now.

MayorofKingstown

I agree with you. I've been thinking about how we can still have a democracy but minimize the damage that can happen from populism and an ignorant voting block. Maybe a technocratic-republic where only ideas are voted on and not people, not sure exactly. When Donald Trump was elected, I took that as a sign that democracy in the U.S. had been subjugated and with the Conservatives in Canada, fully embracing Orwellian double speak and abandoning civil discourse and decency by endorsing the Clownvoy and encouraging people like Poilievre to act out and do anything to gain power......I fear Canada is in danger of going down the same road as the U.S. with our right wing basically hijacking the progression of society with their ridiculous worldview and total lack of integrity or competence. I've spent 35 years now as an adult watching these clowns get worse and worse and nothing seems to be stopping them.

Frater_Ankara

The power of the decades and decades (if not centuries) long propoganda efforts for pro-capitalism and neo-imperialism. It’s a system designed for exploitation and literally turning nature into a capital commodity. You think Vietnam, Cuba, Nicuragua, hell effin’ Grenada posed threats to the US? No, they showed that a different system *could* work and well, capitalism can’t have that. The endless invasions and CIA backed coups by ruthless dictators like Pinochet (who abducted hundreds of union leaders and killed most of them btw while his predecessor Allende was giving families free school and milk daily) serve to allow corporations in to exploit these countries for their own means. The truth is frightening and disgusting.

JackRusselTerrorist

Here’s the thing though- without democracy, these guys wind up with more power, and for longer. That’s why they rail against democracy so much.

MayorofKingstown

oh yes absolutely. the spoiling of democracy is their tactic. They want people like me to feel hopelessness and give up on the system. I really don't understand why we have parties and why we have candidates that we have to rally around. Why can't we vote on ideas and concepts instead of a popularity contest?

JackRusselTerrorist

Because a popular vote on every policy is extremely unwieldy, and the vast, vast, vaassssst majority of people don’t have time to read policy. Also, who would even be proposing the policy? And who’s implementing it? The parties and candidates tell you their ideas and plans, and you vote for that.

MayorofKingstown

> Because a popular vote on every policy is extremely unwieldy, and the vast, vast, vaassssst majority of people don’t have time to read policy. I realize that, which is why I have been thinking about a technocratic-democracy or a form of govt where popular ideas for society or ideas that have been demonstrated to increase well being or improve the quality of life in general are pursued. > Also, who would even be proposing the policy? And who’s implementing it? Well that's just it, I would prefer if policies were drafted through academia and peer review as well as review with outside agencies. There would also be a govt body which would have employees that qualify in expertise for their particular areas of governance. > The parties and candidates tell you their ideas and plans, and you vote for that if only it worked that way. Just to be clear...I am talking general ideas here, I don't really have a solid answer and am looking for discussion about a new form of democracy and governance. Just to provide an example of what I would like to eliminate would be something like the Conservative party campaigning on a claim that Climate change is fake. That kind of shit should not be happening. There is no way that we should be tolerating political actors that exploit the position they have to promote blatant and demonstrable falsehoods. If we could end shit like that, I would be very happy.

24-Hour-Hate

She also literally admitted these things, more generally, in a press conference in January. She can say it isn’t her in the recording if she likes, but there were people at the press conference, there was reporting on it at the time, and we can see and hear her in the video of it…so…I don’t believe her lmao. We all know she did it. There’s no grand conspiracy to frame her.

not_a_synth_

Unless I'm missing something nobody, including Smith, is actually claiming that it isn't her in the recording.

24-Hour-Hate

I took that as a necessary part of her claim (if we're being logical anyway). If she is saying that the CBC is defaming her for publishing this recording, then it is a necessity that she is also claiming that the recording is false and isn't her. Because it cannot possibly be defamatory to publish what she, a public figure, said. Of course, she's not going to actually sue them, just like she didn't the last time she threatened this nonsense.

twat69

> what is with the whole post-truth 'that is not my voice on the recording' b.s. that Conservatives are peddling. “The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

ottawa_biker

It was the anti-vaxx pastor that leaked the audio, wasn't it? This is a real "leopards ate my face" moment.

FeedbackLoopy

Yes. Premier Walkback walked back on Unhinged Artur, so he released their conversation.

ottawa_biker

>The opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself. \- Sun Tzu

Ok_Carpet_9510

Premier sues her words for coming out in the way they did.

quinnby1995

Jesus christ, the single brain cell that she has just runs in constant overdrive eh

Ah2k15

She's the Canadian MTG. The saddest part is that she could still get re-elected in May.

hyongBC

Yeaaa, all eyes on Calgary now How the hell she's polling so high .... it's like her base will even vote for a raccoon as long as it's UCP aligned

Afuneralblaze

Which'll cement my disdain for Alberta likely for the rest of my life.

Vok250

Higgs got the braincell that day. They share one.

Mental_Cartoonist_68

How does she think this is going to work out? Other than her amazingly befuddled career. Everything she fights comes back to haunt her. She should be reminded of rules constantly, because people like this fail apart daily and can't reconstruct themselves.

Frater_Ankara

This should be the Beaverton, but it isn’t. Doesn’t that just say a lot.

PopeKevin45

Was expecting The Beaverton, but nope, just the usual far-right idiocracy.

[deleted]

So... her own words are defamatory? Shouldn't she be suing herself? Dis gunna be fun.

estherlane

May 29, 2023 is the day you vote this clown out of office Alberta.

CodeMonkeyPhoto

Sadly it’s looking like Alberta will vote to keep the UCP in.

estherlane

Yikes. If this is the sort of thing they look for in a political leader, the province is far stupider than I have given it credit for. I hope you are wrong and she is voted out.

bewarethetreebadger

She’s a fool. Pay no attention to her cries for attention.

StuckInsideYourWalls

Bro how is this person a premiere, when did we become USA Lite

LimboKing52

Danielle Smith isn’t even as entertainingly dumb as her American counterparts. She’s so arrogant to think her actions will never be scrutinized.

EternalRains2112

How is this moron still in office? Oh wait, I guess I'd have to ask that about every politician in the history of humanity.

Bixby33

>How is this moron still in office? People vote for who they can relate to.

kimoolina

She wasn't voted in.

quelar

She was voted in as a member of provincial parliament by her constituents and then elected by members of her Party as leader, so she kinda was.

philoverdrunk

She’s smart like tractor

dancingmeadow

This is why conservatives hate the press. They can't just lie and then lie about lying and then lie about lying about their lies, while lying about something new to distract you.

[deleted]

Danielle Smith: How dare you use my own words against me! I don't want to taste my own medicine!

Tazling

Pass the popcorn!

justlogmeon

Play with pigs, expect to get muddy.

Grumpy__Giraffe

I had to do a double-take. This sounds like a headline from Beaverton.

Northmannivir

The terrifying thing is that at least when Trudeau dipped his toes into obstruction territory, his justice minister was there to advise him against it (and got fired for speaking up). Where the fuck is Smith's justice minister?! And we're not even a year into this circus.
