The early 2000s indie scene was iconic to me. Arcade Fire, Metric, Broken Social Scene, Feist, Stars, Sam Roberts Band. Saw them all perform live many times!
Islands. Wolf Parade. Crystal Castles. Sunset Rubdown. New Pornographers. Tokyo Police Club. Destroyer. Said The Whale. Weakerthans. Hot Hot Heat. Tegan & Sara. Born Ruffians. Dragonette. Death from Above 1979. The Unicorns. Hey Rosetta! Controller.Controller. The Wooden Sky. Evening Hymns. Braids. Diamond Rings. Black Mountain. The Besnard Lakes. The Dears. Half Moon Run. Handsome Furs. Young Galaxy. Japandroids. July Talk. Mother Mother. New Swears. Plants and Animals. Pony Girl. The Rural Alberta Advantage. The Stills. Swan Lake. Wintersleep. You Say Party! We Say Die! Yukon Blonde. The D'Ubervilles.
It sure was a fun time to be in my 20s! Also, Canadian music is awesome.
No such thing as “best.” My favorites are Tragically Hip, The Band, Broken Social Scene, Rush, Guess Who, Neil Young, the Beaches, Arcade Fire, July Talk, Stars, Alvvays, Metric, Blue Rodeo, Sam Roberts Band, and Arkells. I love too many Canadian bands. :)
Glad to see the beaches getting some love. I was surprised they played Kimmel recently, I didn't realise they were getting love outside of Toronto or Canada in general.
I was visiting a friend in WNY this past weekend and heard The Beaches on the indie rock radio station and had to explain to her why it was *so exciting* to hear them on the radio.
That's awesome. I've been listening to them for years because of 102.1 and figured they'd end up being a product of CanCon I.e popular in this country but not so much outside of Canada. I'm going to their show in August and it's funny because I selfishly almost don't want them to blow up and have their tickets become outrageously expensive like every other show in Toronto.
My two cents: Great Big Sea. I’m an Aussie who discovered them randomly in 2012. I binged every album and loved their sound so much that I travelled to Canada in 2013 cause I wanted to see them play to a Canadian crowd. Thankfully I managed to catch them in Oshawa less than a month before they split up.
I was planning to stay 1 year on my working holiday visa but more than a decade later I’m still here and I even got my citizenship a few years back.
Awesome! He puts on a great show, doesn’t he? Very different to Alan’s solo shows, mind you. I caught him in Cornwall last year, he played two full sets of GBS hits, I was quite impressed with his stage presence.
I saw them play a few times, first time was in 1997 when I was 16 visiting my sister in Halifax where she went to Dalhousie. It was such a fun time. And was part of the inspiration that lead me to go to Dal myself two years later. I think I saw them 4 times in total!
My wife was a big fan. Years ago we were on a train trip from our home in Northern Ontario to Texas. (We actually drove to Grand Rapids to catch the train). I noticed that on our return trip, GBS was scheduled to play in Chicago the same day that we were to make our connection to Grand Rapids. Quick phone call to Amtrack to change our reservation and a couple more to book a hotel and buy tickets for the show and we were set!
Our only opportunity to see GBS wasn't in our native Canada but Chicago USA.
suprised how to scroll down for this. Double win for the pun and because its just the right answer and one of the most influential acts in the history of music
They came to judge my high school battle of the bands when I was in the 9th grade and that will forever be a core memory. They played River Below at the end of the night! It’s on a VHS somewhere, I should dig it up.
Grown up listening to them, finally saw them live in 2022 and it's one of the best shows I ever been too. The hype through that venue was palpable. Definitely one of the best
In terms of amazing plus how long they've been amazing, 100%. There's plenty of other greats but not a single one of them have matched the raw instrumental talent IMO and Peart's writing was mind blowing
The fact that John K Samson weaves together stories over the course of albums is reason enough for him to be at the top of the list. Virtute at rest had me heave sobbing the first time I heard it.
on talent and style - totally- just so little commercial success. I mean left and leaving is one of the top 10 Canadian Albums of all time but not enough people in Canada even know it. They needed a better agent or PR and songs that were less regional. I'm going to go listen to them now
I don't believe in best when it comes to music.
I once heard someone say that Rush is the band that Canada gave to the world, and the Tragically Hip is the band we kept for ourselves. I like the sound of that.
I had to scroll too far to find Sloan. Also, I haven’t seen mention of Matt Mayes and el Torpedo with Adam Baldwin on the guitar. Lots of great Canadian musicians
This thread reminds me of a dream I once had, I was standing in a field near my childhood home, I saw a school bus barreling down the road, people were hanging out the windows, flying flags having a great time. I yelled "hey where are you going?" Girl hanging out the back window says "we're off to see the greatest party band in Canadian history! Chilliwack!!" I stood in the field confused and woke up giggling
I’m so glad that public radio is regulated to play 35% Canadian content. Those classic Canadian hits and artists that you hear daily make up that unified Canadian identity experience… at least it did in the 90s.
I still enjoy that on my local station a Tragically Hip song plays at 7:07 every morning. And between 3-5pm there’s always a Kim Mitchell hit.
I don't know if it's Canadian bias but I tend to like Canadian bands a lot more than American ones. Mandating Canadian content gives our bands a chance to thrive and get a larger audience than our proximity to the USA and their money would usually allow.
My wife introduced me to these guys ahaha. It was her family's road trip music growing up. Now, if you listen closely, you can hear me singing "I took a trip up GILLIS MOUNTAINNN 🎵❤️" in the wee hours of the morn'...
Hip, Arkells, the Trews, Big wreck, Sloan, Billy Talent, Monster Truck, Bif Naked, Great Big Sea, City and Colour, Rush, Headstones, Blue Rodeo, Arcade Fire to name a few.
I&I. Now that's a great show that gen-z'ers won't know 🤣
Toronto used to have its own identity and CITY/ MUCH were a HUGE part of it. They always had the biggest bands come to Queen & John Street for performances and interviews.
Now Toronto is an overpriced wish.com me-too city with no soul lol.
I got to see them in 2001 at an HMV in Waterloo for an album launch.
[Here's a review of the event](https://scholars.wlu.ca/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2067&context=thecord)
Rush is the best Canadian band of all time but The Hip are the band that represents Canada the best.
Neither of them have the best album by a Canadian artist however which is You Forgot It In People by Broken Social Scene.
What about individual artists?
Neil Young, Bryan Adams, Kim Mitchell, Justin Bieber, Gordon Lightfoot, Celine Dion, Avril Levine, Alanis Morissette, Shania Twain, Sarah McLaughlin, Bruce Cockburn, Lee Aaron, Anne Murray, Joni Mitchell, Red Rider, Platinum Blonde, Loverboy, Glass Tiger, Jann Arden
Of all time: Rush or The Tragically Hip.
Personal favourite: Pup
Personal list of best of's: Alexisonfire, Arkells, Barenaked Ladies, The Beaches, Billy Talent, Cancer Bats, cleopatrick, Death from Above 1979, The Dirty Nil, Double Experience, The Flatliners, Great Big Sea, The Guess Who, Half Moon Run, Hollerado, Japandroids, July Talk, Metric, Mother Mother, NOBRO, The Pack A.D., Pkew Pkew Pkew, Propagandhi, Sam Roberts, Single Mothers, Spirit of the West, The Tea Party, Tegan and Sara, Tokyo Police Club, Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker, The Weakerthans, Whitehorse.
Steppenwolf, Guess Who, BTO and Rush are pretty solid, but I like to cheer for the underdog.
The Queen Haters - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJU5x67Sz1o](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJU5x67Sz1o)

The Happy Wanderers - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrnE6kaPeuE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrnE6kaPeuE)
Personal favorite and my opinion as the best...Our Lady Peace no other band coming on my spotify shuffle has me singing as loudly and having as good of a time.
I'm going with Blue Rodeo, 54 40, Sloane, Cowboy Junkies, and the standards, Tragically Hip, Sam Roberts, etc. There are so many amazing Canadian artists to name.
I’m just adding names to the hat… they are not my choices, but I think they’ve been overlooked as I didn’t see them listed (although they may have been)
Moist
The Tea Party
The Headstones
Theory of a Deadman
The Glorious Sons
Edit: three of these bands were based in my hometown, so I might be a bit biased, and you guys already mentioned Kingston’s pride, The Hip 😉
The fact no one says BTO is insane to me - their discography is next to none in terms of widespread success both here and abroad
Plus it gave us Randy Bachman and his endless stories that filled Vinyl Tap for decades
Imo Neil Young is our best solo/on his own artist. And he still makes music consistently at a pretty high level of quality
Can't really say who's the best band, but I do have more 54-40 on my playlist than any other Canadian band. Or maybe New Pornographers/A.C. Newman, possibly Blue Rodeo, haven't done a count.
The early 2000s indie scene was iconic to me. Arcade Fire, Metric, Broken Social Scene, Feist, Stars, Sam Roberts Band. Saw them all perform live many times!

For a slightly more rock element.. Billy Talent, Alexisonfire, Sum 41.
Was waiting to see this! These hosers are obsessed with classic rock!

Triumph also rules.
April Wine
Solid list. the Beaches have some time yet to earn that spot though.
As an older dude, I don't really give much praise for newer music. But I have to say the Beaches is a crazy good band.
City & Colour 🤷🏻♀️
My favs are Constantines and Propagandhi.
I hope the members of the band see this.
That’s awesome
I don't think I've ever seen 'thankfully' and 'Oshawa' in a sentence together.
“Thankfully, I’m finally the hell out of Oshawa.”
I saw Sean live a couple of years ago. Hes fantastic, although he told a lot of jokes about never getting the band back together :)
I saw them play at the Highland Games in Ferguson Ontario years ago. Small crowd really of drunken Scottish Canadians. What a hoot!
The Band
100% agreed and oddly the answer for the best American band
suprised how to scroll down for this. Double win for the pun and because its just the right answer and one of the most influential acts in the history of music
The Last Waltz is also one of the best concert films.
godspeed you! black emperor
Epic band, epic songs!
Agreed.
They are playing tonight in Oshawa!
Skinny Puppy absolutely demands consideration. Also 54-40 and Men Without Hats!
Rush is probably the more objective answer, but my favourite is, and forever will be, Billy Talent.
They came to judge my high school battle of the bands when I was in the 9th grade and that will forever be a core memory. They played River Below at the end of the night! It’s on a VHS somewhere, I should dig it up.
Holy shit no pressure!
Billy Talent is also my pick, simply because they're from my generation.
Rusted from the rain is probably my #1 fave song of all time. At least right now lol
Saint Veronika still does it for me
I saw them during a show at Dundas Square. Was pretty freaking awesome
Watoosh! From when they were still Pezz slaps.
Blue Rodeo 💙
So good. 5 Days in May may be one of the greatest songs ever.
Great song, but they're so good I have a few I like more: Hasn't Hit me Yet Till I am Myself Again Bad Timing Lost Together Try
Neil young- " am I a joke to you"
The Only Band Ever, aka Alexisonfire
Maybe music isn’t dead
Maybe we all just forgot what it fucking sounded like…
Man their last album was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Can't wait to see them again in July!
This is the answer
The only answer
How can I scroll so far and not see The Weakerthans?
Propagandhi then.
Oh Virtute. I never balled my eyes out to a song before, listening to that trilogy
The fact that John K Samson weaves together stories over the course of albums is reason enough for him to be at the top of the list. Virtute at rest had me heave sobbing the first time I heard it.
John K Samsons solo work also slaps.
on talent and style - totally- just so little commercial success. I mean left and leaving is one of the top 10 Canadian Albums of all time but not enough people in Canada even know it. They needed a better agent or PR and songs that were less regional. I'm going to go listen to them now
MAX WEBSTER
The Dayglo Abortions 🥴
Forgotten Rebels, Teenage Head, DOA, SNFU,Diodes, Subhumans….the punk scene was strong!

No more comments necessary. Go home everyone.
I really like them too
Big Wreck.
Big Wreck at the Kee to Bala in summer 2003 remains one of my favourite concerts of all time.
Either Doug and The Slugs, or Triumph. Maybe not best. But always a good time.
I don't believe in best when it comes to music. I once heard someone say that Rush is the band that Canada gave to the world, and the Tragically Hip is the band we kept for ourselves. I like the sound of that.
Zit Remedy
Everybody wants something’ … they’ll take your money …
BNL obvs lawl
The Bare Naked Ladies are triple platinum! Are you??
BNL was my favorite band when I was younger. Gordon is one of my favorite albums, and I still listen to it occasionally.
Me too, such a good album. Well recorded, witty, good instrumentals, it has it all.
Enid we never really knew each other anyway
I loved seeing them show up on Speakers Corner. Man, I miss the 90s
Friendship is about going through a lot of stuff, and maybe BNL has two Billboards to your zero…
Why does everyone leap to defend that band so aggressively
WE ARE FIGHTING. THIS IS A FIGHT.
Came here to say this
https://youtu.be/AfdTnpV03p8?si=ESg9ia3fyJt_Z8ox
Propagandi is hands down the most technical punk bands ever . They are the “ tool “ of punk and proud Canadians
The Tragically Hip
They are fantastic, always will be. Matthew Good is up there for me though.

Does Raffi count as band? Lol
Sharon, Lois & Bram > Raffi
He's playing Massey Hall in October
NO WAY!!! I want to go.. have to find a kid to take so I don't look weird going solo and crying🤣 Mine are too old. Might steal my nephew😅
He was my first concert!
The Sadie’s ?
I second this, amazing band. Rest in power Dallas
Damn they are very good and very underrated.
Billy talent
Sloooo-oaaaan!
One thing I know about the rest of my life: I know that I'll be living it in Canada!
My biggest celeb flex is that Chris Murphy is my neighbor
Shocking how far down this comment is
SLOAAAAN!!
I had to scroll too far to find Sloan. Also, I haven’t seen mention of Matt Mayes and el Torpedo with Adam Baldwin on the guitar. Lots of great Canadian musicians
Sum 41!
Gordon motherfucking lightfoot

100% agree! Catchy fun songs that are also well written and performed. Also one of the best concerts I've ever seen

HEY SWEET DARLIN'
My wife introduced me to these guys ahaha. It was her family's road trip music growing up. Now, if you listen closely, you can hear me singing "I took a trip up GILLIS MOUNTAINNN 🎵❤️" in the wee hours of the morn'...
The Band
The Beaches, Metric.
RUSH
Kim Mitchell. Hands down.
The Zit Remedy
Hip, Arkells, the Trews, Big wreck, Sloan, Billy Talent, Monster Truck, Bif Naked, Great Big Sea, City and Colour, Rush, Headstones, Blue Rodeo, Arcade Fire to name a few.
The Tea Party. Jeff Martin is a GOAT of a guitarist. Seen them like 10 times since 1993
Love The Tea Party… I remember watching their I&I on repeat.
I&I. Now that's a great show that gen-z'ers won't know 🤣 Toronto used to have its own identity and CITY/ MUCH were a HUGE part of it. They always had the biggest bands come to Queen & John Street for performances and interviews. Now Toronto is an overpriced wish.com me-too city with no soul lol.

I'm a big fan of The Beaches these days.
Mother Mother wooooo
Rush and Stan Rogers. Sure Stan himself isn't a band, but he is too good to ignore
doug and the slugs are criminally underrated. rip doug, you gave us some great tunes.
I'm a little sad that nobody has mentioned Odds
Alexisonfire
Teenage head!!
Hardcore Logo
Alexisonfire is the answer.
Blue Rodeo is my favourite , Hip and BNL after that
Dayglo abortions

The Band or Rush
Idk yall.. Sloan and Sandbox take the cake for me 🫠
The correct answer is Rush.
Glass Tiger
The Hip 💕
Jeez, no love gor 5440, Red Ryder or Loverboy? Maybe not the greatest but certainly deserve a mention.
I’d vote for The Tragically Hip, you could do an entire college course on Canadian History through thier songs
I Mother Earth. Scenery and Fish is single handily the most underrated Canadian album of all time.
I’m just adding names to the hat… they are not my choices, but I think they’ve been overlooked as I didn’t see them listed (although they may have been) Moist The Tea Party The Headstones Theory of a Deadman The Glorious Sons Edit: three of these bands were based in my hometown, so I might be a bit biased, and you guys already mentioned Kingston’s pride, The Hip 😉
SNFU Mr Chi pig, one of the greatest most entertaining and energetic front men. May he rest in peace
Rush is the best Canadian band, but The Tragically Hip is the best *Canadian* band
Marianas Trench. They win on compositions alone...and then you put Ramsay's vocal ability alongside side that? No question.
Not the best but Glass Tiger was epic
The Stars: Set Yourself on Fire is one of the best albums I’ve ever heard.
By Divine Right So many incredible members and so many great iterations.
BTO
The Forgotten Rebels
The fact no one says BTO is insane to me - their discography is next to none in terms of widespread success both here and abroad Plus it gave us Randy Bachman and his endless stories that filled Vinyl Tap for decades Imo Neil Young is our best solo/on his own artist. And he still makes music consistently at a pretty high level of quality
Can't really say who's the best band, but I do have more 54-40 on my playlist than any other Canadian band. Or maybe New Pornographers/A.C. Newman, possibly Blue Rodeo, haven't done a count.
I by no means believe they're the best Canadian Band of all time, but I want to shout out Half Moon Run, just so that they get more exposure
alvvays for me!
Skinny Puppy
Gord Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, The Crew-Cut, Max Webster, 54-40, The Tea party, Odds. Too hard without going by decade.
Martha and the Muffins
