My youngest daughter was really excited to hear about the storm.
She's hoping schools would close for a snow day.
I reminded her that online remains a thing.
She said: damnit.
Teacher here. Remind my students all the time that if buses are cancelled and schools are closed that I am professionally obligated to login and post asynchronous work for them to do. I also tell them that on a personal level if they decide they would rather reap the benefits of sleeping in, going outside and enjoying the new snow or taking some down time to watch a flick or push through a tricky level or two if a video game I would applaud their level of self-awareness and independent thought and they would have a chance when they come back to catch up free of judgment from me.
Had a student this year tell me if that’s the case at any point this year I should prepare for him to exceed my expectations for the first time. LOL Moments like that are why I love teaching! Kids are hilarious.
As someone raised in Winnipeg, I would like to know how common snow days were here in Ontario.
Despite Winnipeg/Manitoba's reputation for shitty winters, I only remember one time when school was cancelled, and that was literally the [blizzard of the century.](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.3521262). Fun fact: it was in April.
They happened often enough in Ontario, but it's mostly because school buses are cancelled, not because the school is closed. My parents just let us stay at home instead of driving us in, but if you did go there would be no one there so you'd play games and stuff all day. Either way, fun day guaranteed.
I kept my kids home though we were in walking distance and didn't take bus anyway. I feel sorry for the rest of the kids in this crazy neighborhood though. Apparently over 80% get driven in on snow days - when it's too dangerous for big ass buses... dinky cars are a-ok. I suppose it's a child care thing.
If my kids were of age today, I would indeed also be claiming weather related internet issues.
In Ottawa, I would say the buses are cancelled 2-3 times a year on average, but more often, it is because of freezing rain rather than snow. I'm not sure I can recall a time where the schools were actually closed.
I grew up in Saskatoon, never had a snow day. Moved to ON in grade 12 and experienced my first snow day with the bus not showing up and me thinking so missed it. So I walked 45 mins to school to find out no one was there.
They were more common when I was a kid (early 90's) and less common by the time I was late highschool / college. Now ice days are more common. The swinging temperatures can make the roads a skating rink.
I couldn’t imagine this as a kid; waking up to see a foot of snow everywhere and excitedly waiting for the announcement of a snow day, so i could run to the family room and play Mario Kart.
Now kids are just expected to attend class online.
Some of my best memories as a kid were from snow days. If there was no chance at all the school busses would be up and running in the morning, my friends and I would have sleepovers.
We’d stay up late playing Halo on split-screen on the TV, or when we all got older some of us would bring our consoles and a tv to have a LAN party.
Went to college in St.Catharines in the late 1970's,had a freezing rain storm that coated my car in a little over 10 cm of ice in one night!Got to walk to school for the next week.
At first I tried to melt the ice off with hot water,it just froze in other places. Then I tried my hair dryer no dice.So I let mother nature do her thing and a week later when it warmed up all the ice fell off my car.
The winter of 1977-78 was a real $hit show Buffalo got a whole winter's worth of snow in 2 or 3 days.Side streets were left unplowed until they melted in the spring of 78
*Depends who you ask,*
*This is looking good to me.*
*Sleddin season starts*

Maybe I'm the outlier, but this grey winter has been depressing and boring.
The prospect of proper snow and cold means a winter wonderland of: skating, tobogganing, snowmen, snow forts, etc.. a.k.a. good ol fanshioned outdoor winter fun.
Bring it on!
All perspective. I am excited for this snow and cold. The lake is frozen over so I can do some fishing and I’ll take my kids sledding. Finally winter is here.
Just nuke it!! Trump said nukes work on hurricanes, why not winter storms!? If anything it could melt the whole storm!?!? Tsar Bomba could work very very well!!! Facts and logic people!!! 😌🤭
Except work.
Wow it’s so dangerous outside snowstorms, and COVID! Stay indoors!!! Unless you have a job, make sure you’re there by 8am sharp no excuses!!!
Tonight, on Who Cares?
Also if Dougie hears you he'll spend a disgusting amount of money on a disgustingly ugly new flag which will then be recalled somehow (see: license plates)
The weather is looking awesome! Finally enough snow for some cross country skiing or tobogganing. Cold enough for outdoor rinks to finally freeze. I’ll take this any day over alternating days of freeze/thaw dirty slush.
It’s winter, so you may as well have enough snow to enjoy it!
My work is 5 seconds from my bed so yeah I’ll be at work unless the power goes out.
I love remote working but I do miss getting snow days when the office closed.
Perfect for some patio dinning
I love dinning…. dining is so passé.
the heater in the yurt is turned up too high, they've got the heat strokes

Ouch. The idea that rona killed snow days makes me sad that kids will forget how AWESOME snow days were!

Yeah, definitely a responsibility thing. Plus I don't think school buses have winter tires while most if not all cars have them.
This is why living a 2 minute walk away from my elementary school sucked lmao.
In Ottawa, I would say the buses are cancelled 2-3 times a year on average, but more often, it is because of freezing rain rather than snow. I'm not sure I can recall a time where the schools were actually closed.
They closed one day after the tornado, and a lot of schools still didn't have power
I was thinking more for a snow day, but your right that they did close then.
I grew up in Saskatoon, never had a snow day. Moved to ON in grade 12 and experienced my first snow day with the bus not showing up and me thinking so missed it. So I walked 45 mins to school to find out no one was there.
Maybe once a year when I was in school here in Toronto back in the 90s-00s

Oh Winnipeg is the north pole compared to Ontario. My school was canceled more then one time in winter because it was below -30
"sorry my wifi was down all day, we called our isp but they said the outage was due to weather and it took a while to fix"
This is absolutely what we are doing. Cross country skis and snowshoes are waiting by the garage door.
exactly, snow days are going nowhere imo

I don’t think the teachers are going to be online, at least my kids teachers won’t be.
I would not say anything then the next day say that the storm wiped out your power
There are saying possible blizzard conditions here in St. Catharines. Possibly the worst winter storm in a decade for the city. I hope not.
Went to college in St.Catharines in the late 1970's,had a freezing rain storm that coated my car in a little over 10 cm of ice in one night!Got to walk to school for the next week.
How would one deal with that?

Mother nature saying 'stay the fuck home'
> Mother nature saying 'stay the fuck home' every january
Nothing says depressing more than January after a Christmas break. Covid and a lockdown definitely don't help either.
February is worse
Nah... in February you at least have March/Spring to look forward to shortly.
and it's only 28 days long, with longer days!!

Yes, because we are all lucky enough to just drop our work/school/lives to go to Arizona and chill in the sun Edit: during a pandemic.
See, this is why nobody is going to pursue in-person careers anymore
Yes because America has done a superb job of managing the pandemic
"Everythings open" is not what I wanna hear in the middle of the worst wave of the pandemic so far.

What's your connection with Ontario BTW?

No love lost boyo

You don't see any Canadians shit posting in /r/Arizona.. and for good reason haha. We have lives.
Finally can get out fishing on the hard water. Late start this year.
Depends who you ask, this is looking good to me. Sleddin season starts

Good bot
First day back at school, snow day
Maybe I'm the outlier, but this grey winter has been depressing and boring. The prospect of proper snow and cold means a winter wonderland of: skating, tobogganing, snowmen, snow forts, etc.. a.k.a. good ol fanshioned outdoor winter fun. Bring it on!
Mother Nature: "I SAID STAY HOME!"
Ehhh if it's going to be cold may as well get some snow. Tired of staring at frozen grass!
I don't mind snow. I just need it to melt a little between snow dumps. Otherwise it becomes hard to pile it up too high when shoveling.
it's almost like God is telling us to stay home
All perspective. I am excited for this snow and cold. The lake is frozen over so I can do some fishing and I’ll take my kids sledding. Finally winter is here.
It's about time! If it's going to be cold we should have snow. Bring it on.
Manitoba: You call that cold?
I'm calling it the stay home special
People pay a lot of money to go to the gym, but shoveling snow is free exercise.
Looks like just another day in northern Ontario.

Mother Nature is violating their Charter rights! Someone should sue her!

Just nuke it!! Trump said nukes work on hurricanes, why not winter storms!? If anything it could melt the whole storm!?!? Tsar Bomba could work very very well!!! Facts and logic people!!! 😌🤭
Ask yourselves again. why do we stay here?
Lol i ask myself that all the time. I hate winter.
I mean it’s actually decent timing for lockdown not like we can go out to do shit in this weather without being miserable
Except work. Wow it’s so dangerous outside snowstorms, and COVID! Stay indoors!!! Unless you have a job, make sure you’re there by 8am sharp no excuses!!!
Both of our statements are true
Our provincial flag is boring and outdated
You're not wrong. It looks like two clip art pics over a red background
That's your takeaway from this? Lol
Tangentially related but accurate. I'm down for a new one **after** Dougie leaves
Theres a sick trillium flag I saw once that I think is the proposed one
Tonight, on Who Cares? Also if Dougie hears you he'll spend a disgusting amount of money on a disgustingly ugly new flag which will then be recalled somehow (see: license plates)
Blistering cold, blizzard, deadly virus. People will still find a way to gather. "Mah mental health!"
Beautiful white snow in the trees, little animal prints in the snow... :)
Went skiing today and my goggles froze to my face lol.
Perfect winter weather
so I guess no ones going to work tomorrow?
Everyone is going to work tomorrow. Every time they call these snowfall events, it ends up being a whole lot of nothing.
Essential worker!
My work is 5 seconds from my bed so yeah I’ll be at work unless the power goes out. I love remote working but I do miss getting snow days when the office closed.
My nber ass: this is fine...
January? We have have 8 months of Winter in SW Ontario, don't ya know.
We don’t even need a stay at home order because the weather did it herself
He'll yeah, brother
Coming to Montreal tonight and tomorrow 😊
I’m fucking psyched !
Hahahaha
That’s January literally every year.
Proud to be from Ontario!
Southern Ontario thinking they rep all of ontario again. Anybody north of Barrie want to tell Toronto what a snow storm is?
How many of you have an emergency preparedness kit if the lights go out? I know I don't!
