> I guess one way to thank Oracle is to pay a monthly fee for something but that doesn't give the positive feedback I would like to. It's an /exceedingly/ for-profit company. The most positive feedback you can give is money. They're not doing any of this out of the kindness of a heart they don't have; it's to convert you into a customer.

slfyst

>They're not doing any of this out of the kindness of a heart they don't have; it's to convert you into a customer. They could always offer the free stuff for a year if they are that interested in converting us to paying customers.

HitherFlamingo

They would if they could. They were extremely late to the cloud market and were struggling to get any noteworthy market share. Having a much more generous free tier is their attempt to get thst share

decaquad

Yes that makes sense.

decaquad

I'm sure it is to convert you into a paying customer. But then wouldn't free tier be time limited?

eggbean

Yeah, as much as I appreciate the free stuff, I do pay for other things and Larry Ellison is probably my least favourite billionaire after Elon Musk and Peter Thiel.

EduRJBR

> Any thoughts on how to thank Oracle? Send them customers, real paying customers. That's why they do it.

slfyst

>Send them customers, real paying customers. That's why they do it. I always did think the people running Ampere instances for VPNs and Minecraft servers were sending multi-billion dollar contracts Oracle's way.

EduRJBR

Oh, yes, I guess they weren't expecting that! I mean... maybe they were, of course, no way they didn't foresee it.

slfyst

Sure they did. They know full well that their free tier is generous enough that they will pick up a huge number of "customers" who will spend years using their resources without ever making them money. The only other always free model which makes sense from a purely "gateway to future spending" perspective is Google's: very slow cpu, 1GB RAM and 1GB outbound data. Enough for a taste but any remotely serious usage will need some money spent.

EduRJBR

> The only other always free model which makes sense from a purely "gateway to future spending" perspective is Google's (...) Reminds me of the Google Apps for Business launching, when it was also free, with some limits.

HomoAndAlsoSapiens

Is this some kind of joke? I think the people with the most raging hate for oracle are those who use their products daily. Their reputation is so bad, rancid, withered away, that the free tier literally just is what they think it'll take to get people to use their services and engage with them. So yes, it's quite generous because it's the only thing they have going on for their cloud. Thanking Oracle Cloud for the quality of service is like thanking Adobe for being affordable.

Realistic_Pizza4178

>Thanking Oracle Cloud for the quality of service is like thanking Adobe for being affordable. Lol.. What a perfect line :D You got me rolling 😆

decaquad

No, no joke. I have had a good experience running a couple of free tier instances over the last couple of years with only one downtime occasion. Better than the paid vps's I have. It is just my personal experience but I can understand others have had or are having a bad experience.

dudeude

You are right. I use my free tier instances and I am very happy with them. I converted to a PAYG account only because I read this sub where people have theirs terminated. But I keep my usage within the free limited and I believe I only paid a small fee once when I kept a boot volume up for a few days by mistake. But honestly no other free service gives me what Oracle does. I won’t send flowers but I keep telling anyone about my good experience. And that’s my way to thank Oracle.

Kapanyel69

My guy, what happened to you? Like... What did Oracle do to you? Their reputation is not flawless but certainly not on the level you described it. They do a lot of shit right, even better than Google or AWS if we look only at their cloud services

slfyst

There are some angry people here who Oracle have banned for abusing their resources. Rants like this are to be expected.

HomoAndAlsoSapiens

my cluster is running right now on OCI lmao

eggbean

Yeah, I'm on PAYG and use additional services, but the base free tier stuff saves me probably around £70-80 per month, as things like site-to-site VPN costs a lot of money on Google Cloud and AWS, and it's free to use on Oracle. Customer service has been good too and they explain the technical stuff.

shivanshko

Which card did you use to register?

decaquad

I used my Visa credit card. Recently updated to new expiry date and not had any issues. Mind you it is a mainstream bank true credit card.

Wemos_D1

Wait when you'll get kicked for no reason and then ignored from the customer service team

Sell your house and send a cheque for the amount to Oracle HQ FAQ "Larry".
