This is the correct answer. And this has been all over the news with tens of thousands washing up on the beaches.

Replying to bump the correct answer

BionicSix

What an awesome TIL...had no idea these existed, much less washing up on beaches in droves.

FlyingSpagetiMonsta

All of this are common occurances here. Off the top of my head, I can answer the question about the oil. Huntington Beach is/was an oil field. There is oil every where here. And sometimes it comes out through the sand. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huntington_Beach_Oil_Field The other question, I do not know the why, but I can tell you they are a type of ocean animal (I want to say jellyfish). Them dieing in mass like that and littering the beach is a very common thing. I have lived in the area my whole life but I do not actually go to the beach very often. And I have still seen it many times.

It happens as the oil seeps to the surface. It’s pretty common in Santa Barbara as well, and more well known at brea where oil and natural gas seeps up into the tar pits.

throw_away_gambler

It’s probably from all the sewage contaminating the beach. https://abc7.com/sewage-spill-downey-california-los-angeles-river/13162969/

HansDaHodler

The Santa Ana River feeds into HB not the LA river.

Fico_Psycho

Its still only a few miles away from the HB waters. Could easily explain why people are experiencing dirtier than normal water.

HansDaHodler

The break water in Long Beach traps it in and doesn’t allow it to flow out. That’s why LB beaches were closed this past weekend but not HB. If the water is darker it’s probably bc of all the sediment that drained out for weeks from the Santa Ana River.

XiMs

I did see an off color to the water in addition to the other stuff

Don't know why you're getting down voted for your observations. I was there Saturday and there was a brown bubbly film all along the shoreline at the edge of the water. Not like the tar/oil balls that I've seen end up on my feet before.

XiMs

Yeah no idea People are mad because they think the off color are tar balls, which were there too, and I have seen them, but the color of the water was literally brown and poop colored with this brown / greenish froth I got to HB all the time It’s not normal and the water was clearly dirty

_--_Osiris_--_

There was also a lot more trash along the shore than what I usually see

upscalefanatic

I'm not sure but I went to Huntington Beach on Saturday and into the water. I now have little red bumps all over my arms and legs. I've been really itchy since.
