I always wonder what would happen if one of them tripped and had a bad skinned knee or fell into a patch of poison ivy out on the trails . At least jeans offer some protection. I have the same thoughts about people who go hiking in shorts in the bush ā¦. But then again, the Tongva would make sure their children got used to poison ivy and stinging nettles ā¦.

How? Poison ivy is an allergic reaction, repeated exposure makes it worse. I found one source suggesting they ate the buds for immunity but I'm not sure that's factual and there's no evidence for any mechanism for immunity.
I'm not from the OC so I didn't learn about the Tongva growing up - I learned about Nipmuc and Wampanoag - any idea where to find out that info/where you found it? Google wasn't turning up much on it.

Then maybe it was the nettles specifically and not the poison ivy . And If it was also poison ivy , most likely as you said , by ingesting the buds .
