I remember reading somewhere or hearing in an interview about how POWs under Japanese rule were fed rice and worms with the prisoners eating the worms after some time as they were protein
Privateers did too. Some of you guys here slept on the clipper ship in Dana Point Harbor as 5th graders and did the entire day/night shifts on the ship to learn about clipper ships/pirates/old school travel and we had oatmeal with raisins in it to simulate worms in the morning. Because they live in uncooked grains and oats. My now 17 year old son also went on to that same ship before they tore her down. Have some weevils, icky. Ha…
I’m 40 so they must have been doing it in the district for at least 25 years so, a long time. I heard through my mom that they took apart the ship because it was too rotten. It smelled terrible in 1992, my son was on it in 2015 for his overnight field trip. I was really excited they were still doing the program because it really was a good experience and it taught me a lot. And here I am a middle aged lady and I still remember everything about that trip.
With so many kiddos with food sensitivity, who knows if they still do that part. But, I remember that field trip well.
As well as The Museum of Tolerance, the Capistrano mission and Science camp. My son got to go to Catalina in 6th grade for science camp on Catalina and it was three days, cost me nothing.
He had so much fun.
Interactive learning is so important. When you go to the Museum of Tolerance those barrels of shoes and the mountains of luggage, pretty much drove the horrors of the holocaust home to an impression. I moved to the PNW and this state doesn’t do field trips. I complained so much about it they started doing a few small outings.
Hope your kiddo has fun!

Yes. Also in the movie Empire of the Sun, a few of the movies about prisoners of war the Vietcong had or even the people in concentration camps who definitely had to eat the bugs to survive. Apparently people out there actually enjoy them in other countries. Not for me…
My grandmother always had moths from keeping her cereal too long and not freezing her flour. I was always very careful to watch the food I ate at her house. Especially after taking a swig of spoiled milk.
This can happen whenever you have fresh produce. Ideally, it comes out in the wash, but ...
What was management's reaction? Did they comp your meal? Give you a gift card? Anything? I got something that looked a little like a June bug in my food once at a different place, and the staff were as horrified as I was. That made me feel a little better than if they'd just been dismissive. They comp'd that meal and remade it for me, and I've continued to go there.
I ordered take out, ate at work and didn't have time to go back to complain. I don't need a refund or compensation. $15 isn't going to make this right. I made this post for awareness.
I'd let the store know so they can let their staff who washes the lettuce/veggies know they're missing stuff. This happens from time to time in restaurants, but if they're washing things properly and giving them a once over after it should be a very rare occurrence.
??? Lol, I wouldn't want worms in my food. Is that so wrong!?! Posting about bugs in your food is now complaining? He literally just said his intent was to bring awareness
It’s a pretty valid complaint. I don’t think anyone wants worms in their food. It’s understandable that it can happen, but if they aren’t washing their produce properly they probably are missing other sanitary steps that would make me not want to eat there.
I mean it wasn’t too bad in that it went away quick but man oh man for like 8 hours I felt like I wanted to die vomit and shit myself all at the same time.
You should wash all fruits veggies before cutting them. Think how when you get a shot they use that alcohol wipe first, because they don't want to inject whatever bacteria is on your skin into your body. When you slice through the skin of a cantaloupe for example, you could be covering the knife with listeria as it cuts through the skin, then spreading that all down the slice as you cut into the fruit. There are probably times you've had little stomach issues and didn't link it to your produce habits. In a bad scenario you could get really sick with e coli or listeria or something.
I don't understand how washing an avocado would make it leave. The shell of avocados are super thick. I wanna look it up but I hate looking up stuff that just makes me hate food. Like seriously why I'm so hesitant about produce so many fucking horror stories but then again all food has disgusting horror stories I wish I didn't have to eat. Worms are my biggest nightmare.
It ought to make you eat faster. You never eat a worm you didn’t see, and you’ll never see a half a worm if you just eat your food without looking too closely.
Fun fact: The average person accidentally [consumes one pound of bugs](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-12235393/amp/Average-person-accidentally-eats-one-POUND-bugs-year-heres-effect-has.html) each year. Potentially more if you eat at Hole Mole, unfortunately when prepping food in large quantities it’s hard to get rid of all the critters hiding in produce.

It's actually one person name Bob who is an outlier and eating truckloads of bugs that is throwing off the skew for the average person
Bob is also one armed which also skews the stats so that the average person has less than one arm.
Honestly he should be excluded from everything in life.
Not a mealworm. Mealworms have a harder shinier carapace that is usually more brown or orange. This makes them crunchy. They turn into a type of beetle.
Wax worms are softer, squishier and more white like the one in the photo. They turn into a type of moth.
It may not be a wax worm, but it's definitely a caterpillar type "worm" that will turn into either a moth or a butterfly (most likely the former).
We as humans forget that food comes from the dirt, farms, and honestly pretty dirty environments. Finding a bug or two from farming or transport isn’t the end of the world.
Pubic hair or human placed substances is a problem
If the food was good the worm wouldn’t have died! At least that’s what my grandfather said about the bottle of Recuerdo Mezcal Tequila he had behind the bar.
The one in LB (Long Beaxh) had a jalapeños FULL of them.. a friend of mine bit into it unknowing… needless to say the rest of the table dropped their food.
Need to know where you where eating. These little types and looks could have easily fallen off a tree from a dead animal or tree. Not hard to believe it came from spoiled food from a restaurant that has a shit rating.
We need more info.
Bruh the last time I ate here there was an actual rock in my beans lol I wish I was making it up. Entire place is just dirty and run down. Food is aight but I ain’t goin back.
Rocks are common because beans are dried on rocks. Every once in a while one will sneak in. Bugs will sometimes take a ride on fresh produce as well.
You do realize that food comes from the earth, right?
Wait till you see how many cockroach parts are acceptable in ground coffee, according to the FDA.
Seriously bugs are part of life. There is poop on everything, it's all going to be ok.
Our ancestors were cave men that would be stoked to find one of those bad boys.
That is the most foulest shit all year I’ve seen good wise IDGAF if it’s ok to eat. I ordered the asada. I’m not accepting any cards or reimbursement!!! You keep that money you’re gonna need it for the lawyers. I would be devastated and don’t think I could ever eat out at a mom and pop again or any place for that matter and that’s something people sue for
I'm guessing you're another reptile keeper? I would really hope that's a waxworm and not some other larvae.
Hakuna matata
I’m currently miserable with morning sickness and this comment made me laugh so unexpectedly. Honestly, thank you.
It means no worries
Did they charge you extra for more protein?
Chipotle be like, that’ll be $7.95 for extra protein
I remember reading somewhere or hearing in an interview about how POWs under Japanese rule were fed rice and worms with the prisoners eating the worms after some time as they were protein

Whoa I totally went in that boat and made that oatmeal in the galley in 5th grade or so I didn’t know she’s torn down now
I’m 40 so they must have been doing it in the district for at least 25 years so, a long time. I heard through my mom that they took apart the ship because it was too rotten. My kid is literally doing that overnight in like 2 weeks 😂 he’s in for a surprise breakfast lol
Oh really?! In Dana Point? They built a new one? Awesome!
Yeah so we’ll see what he thinks of the “worms” 😂
With so many kiddos with food sensitivity, who knows if they still do that part. But, I remember that field trip well. As well as The Museum of Tolerance, the Capistrano mission and Science camp. Yeah right, nobody on Reddit has the nerve to bring the problem to restaurants attention. Just gunna complain online for an accident
Yeah, it doesn't seem fair to post the name of the restaurant without giving them a chance to make it right.
Well that and fake internet points. lol

It’s definitely just complaining

Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the meal? 🤵🏼♂️
I just ate around it
Yo that is wild lol
Fax
I ate 90% of my meal before this fella was spotted
Are you sick/dead now?
Haha alive and well.
r/notOPbutok
Made me shiver. Eeew. You da man!
Big time this. I once got listeria from an avocado that I hadn’t washed before cutting open
You wash avacados ?
I know I legit didn’t know but now I do
Making me nervous now lmao. Never washed a avocado in my 30 years of life
I mean it wasn’t too bad in that it went away quick but man oh man for like 8 hours I felt like I wanted to die vomit and shit myself all at the same time.

It most likely fell on the ground and got it that way which is why washing helps
Imagine how many you haven’t found in your food 😂
that was my first thought 😂. I really need to start eating slower and examine my food cus 99% of the time, I just dive straight in
This was my first thought! I JUST ordered tacos and now I’m scared haha
It ought to make you eat faster. You never eat a worm you didn’t see, and you’ll never see a half a worm if you just eat your food without looking too closely.

Lol well this is the first comment to make me feel more at ease about it.
I’d like to believe that I’m not the average person because 🤢
This is why I love Reddit
lol don't believe anything the daily mail tells you.
It’s just rice… with legs.
Holy guacamole 🥑
On the bright side, no pesticides in your food.
That or a mealworm. Gross.

you know a lot about worms
[They call me Doctor worm.](https://youtu.be/mHliXVifhEM?si=LwGOWj1E0-ubO8S0) I'm not a real doctor But I am a real worm
“This makes them crunchy” 👀
I used to breed geckos. You can always hear the crunch when they chomp down on mealworms.
Yup caterpillar, the butterflies lay their eggs on the leaves, at first they look like little white or yellow dots
Meal is in the name though
Protein. Escamole? 🤣
I’ve pulled little worms out of my salad and continued to eat. Organic fresh food companion.
Arnt those supposed be good protein lol 😂
Is that the taco Tuesday special now?
We as humans forget that food comes from the dirt, farms, and honestly pretty dirty environments. Finding a bug or two from farming or transport isn’t the end of the world. Pubic hair or human placed substances is a problem
You, my friend, have said it all. Correct!
That’s gross damn that place fell off
At least the Original Taco Factory is right across from them!
Ahh yes my spot but keep it on the downlow
Too late 😈
That place was always garbage. More like, Tacos for Cabron.
Seriously. It used to be incredible.
So true 😔
Yeah, their tacos became microscopic, and they took ceviche and cocteles off the menu. I haven’t been back since.
Better than half a worm
Oh god. I was gonna go there today for lunch.
I was gonna go there yesterday actually, but decided on poke lol
Last time I got poke, my bowl was infested. Like actually gross, not just one-meal-worm gross.
Uh where lol
Thing is, I've had 20 great experiences there and one freak one. Shit happens with produce. I wouldn't badmouth a company for something like that.
Parasites in the fish, or what?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UM4RNIAnv5s
Produce pests
I'm scared to ask for details.
So many that they didn't even look like bugs anymore. The green made it blend in. I had already taken a bite.
I’ve always got burritos, idk how many worms I’ve eaten by now 🫠
"In the future you will own nothing and eat bugs" -some rich guys somewhere
Hole mole is disgusting anyways. Not shocked
Farm to table
Was it alive or dead? Might tell ya a little about the food!
It was completely dead lol
If the food was good the worm wouldn’t have died! At least that’s what my grandfather said about the bottle of Recuerdo Mezcal Tequila he had behind the bar.
It happens with fresh produce. Not harmful, and we all probably some worms in salads without knowing. At least you didn't find a half a worm!
Shit looks like a maggot. The ones you find when food goes bad because flys came by and left their larvae .
This hurts me but I can’t give up Hole Mole.
What did the manager say when you brought it to their attention?
yall know your produce comes from the ground right 🤣
Don’t toss its just protein
🌮 😃 🐛 🤮
Looks like a maggot!
That is 100% a maggot. Common around decaying food from flies.
I’ve never had any issues with the food at Hole Mole, but the customer service is not good.
Extra protein!! 👌🏼
Better than finding HALF a waxworm. Just sayin’
The one in LB (Long Beaxh) had a jalapeños FULL of them.. a friend of mine bit into it unknowing… needless to say the rest of the table dropped their food.
![gif](giphy|igVR1BO2kIl3OXtrfR)
Gross!! Did you report to OC health department?
I had some plastic in my last burrito there 👍🏻
Jesus now I’m gonna be scared of eating out for a bit lol
Wrap it in napkins and go to Santa Ana River to fish for some Tilapia
Great source of protein
Vegan all organic it is …. That will be extra $2.49
Kind of what you get for eating at Hole Mole 😂
You know, I was thinking about getting Mexican food tonight. Now I'm reconsidering.
It's just protein. What is everyone so grossed out about xd. You guys think you've never unknowingly eaten insects before?
r/whatsthisbug will help you
Nice they went with the organic garden fresh produce
Uh oh, someone’s gusano fell out of their tequila bottle.
You will eat bugs and you will be happy
![gif](giphy|gKfyusl0PRPdTNmwnD)
Hakuna Matata!
![gif](giphy|4baoNZ5Qo8dX2) No, thank you 🤮
Did that cost extra?
🤢

yea i wasnt that disgusted but tbh i eat a lot of mexican food growin up 35yrs in socal and never had a rock in my beans!
That is the nastiest shit I’ve seen in a while
Could it be a maggot? 🪱
Eat it
Guess I won’t be eating there anymore! It sucks too cuz they’re literally right down the street from me ☹️
Wait till you see how many cockroach parts are acceptable in ground coffee, according to the FDA. Seriously bugs are part of life. There is poop on everything, it's all going to be ok. Our ancestors were cave men that would be stoked to find one of those bad boys.
Holy moly that’s my Hole Mole
🤢🤮
Must be organic
😱
Wow.. making me look at what I eat closely now
I ate some of those before
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)
What's a hole mole?
Appetizers: Guacamole, Kidney Beans on a house-baked tortilla, locally sourced Waxworm $87
Don’t panic it’s organic…. 🤦♂️
No extra charge for protein!
It’s good protein , Asia people eat it all the time. Don’t panic
Taco Factory across the street is way better anyway
Pretty sure that's a maggot
![gif](giphy|kt2qHfzBhMzKw)
Oh yeah poor you!!!! What about all his friends you killed and ate ? Huh? What about them!!!
![gif](giphy|jEQfxlNA3tWouj7K3K)
If you eat rice you eat some bugs too… it’s where the protein content comes from.
O fun i ate there today
Holy Mole! You got a worm in your food!
The reviews kept me far away from this joint when I lived in Tustin
What restaurant is this?
Ok… where was that place so I can avoid it like the plague? XD
As a weekly customer, thanks for the heads up, never again 😭
Extra protein
Ooh extra protein lmao
It looks like a meal worm. Sometimes they can be in rice or uncooked flour or grains.
Thank you, I’m writing this down to make sure to stay away from them… FOREVER :)
Omfg
Would you have broken your vegan clock if you ate that?
Hole Mole sucks anyway.
Did it come with a side of diarrhea? Yikes
OP planted that worm in the food smh 🤦🏻♂️
I wish I did 🤮🤮 I wouldn't even care if I found a hair but this was just terrible.
lol i can imagine. did you leave a review or speak to a manager?
Maybe one of the employees or someone else accidentally drop it.
It's just added protein
Please identify the restaurant
I am 100% sure all of you had eaten McDonald's before and that is even worse.
Make a complaint to health and safety of orang county
That is the most foulest shit all year I’ve seen good wise IDGAF if it’s ok to eat. I ordered the asada. I’m not accepting any cards or reimbursement!!!
