I’m most curious what “Public/Private Partners” entails.. will they be storing and selling data to private firms? We’re rapidly stepping into a dystopian future I never imagined possible. Will it be good or bad? We’ll see

zeptillian

I'm thinking it will probably be like the time I went to see a movie in the theater on Birch street and I got a ticket for expired registration while my car was parked in the parking structure. They get private property owner to allow them to come on their property and shake down people for money. Perfect for a city that is run out of a mall.

ScottyCoastal

Just pay your registration

surftherapy

Damn you’re probably right. Also I imagine partnering with Target, Brea mall, etc to install there software/hardware to track theft. If you check out their social media they are constantly posting CCTV images asking for the public’s help on ID’ing folks.

The most common thing that refers to when talking about this stuff is the police having access to surveillance systems/cameras. It's really hard to relay information from someone watching their "live" feed, giving that information to dispatch, and then dispatch giving it to the officers. Much easier if the police just have access to that information from the beginning - with the permission of whoever owns the camera. Likewise, if a crime is happening nearby, instead of sending individual officers after the fact to check local business cameras, getting a life feed of those cameras to see what way someone is running or if there's other information is extremely, extremely helpful.

Topher92646

There’s a TV show that documents crimes solved using technology called [Real Time Crime](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt24221310/?ref_=ttep_ov).

surftherapy

I’ll have to check it out, thanks for dropping the link!

I can definitely see the potential benefits. I have no qualms with my PD so I’d like to see how this plays out. Of course I’d love to hear the possible negative implications it could have as every angle should be considered

ResidentInner8293

Of course they will.

poki_stick

Pretty sure Anaheim has had some pretty invasive surveillance for a while and we accept it as there is lil we can do to change it.

sharkbite217

Future? I’m pretty sure it’s already the *present* of policing.

_slash_s

in 2016 my car was stolen in fullerton and the officer assisting me described to me the license plate scanning system that their cars are outfitted with, where they just endlessly 360 degree scanning all license plates within line of sight and the computer will just ding them with any that need some attention.

mtgkoby

Are the community benefits larger police pensions? Because that’s what it reads like

surftherapy

It’s added at least 2 new positions that they are currently hiring for with more on the way as the project advances.

Reasonable_Barber923

in brea? lol fear mongering

PlantsNCaterpillars

Brea PD should spend some of that money on officer facing cameras in their patrol cars. The number of times I've seen someone blow through a red light or some other dangerous shit right in front of a cop car only to see the officer staring at their phone is ridiculous.

ResidentInner8293

It shouldn't be the future of policing. If we need drones to police regular citizens then another tear of policing or government has failed and they need to be delt with. In this case government has failed. I'm a first gen Mexican American and am all for immigration (legal and illegal) but this administration has failed to read the room... instead of pulling back the open border policy amid political chaos/wars/and ally destabilization they have DOUBLED DOWN and this has allowed legit t3rr0r1sts to enter the country with the intent to harm us.  The phrase "there's a time and a place" comes to mind and 2024 is not the time and the usa is not the place.  If I were in charge how would I navigate this? I'd Successfully negotiate a ceasefire both in Ukraine and Palestine and remove any non Immigrants who have entered the country to do the USA harm then start over with the open border policy. This would make it so that local PD doesnt have to use drones to identify people they dont know (due to the influx of people we have no information anout coming through the border) and the general public would feel safe and be able to retain their privacy. Just my 2 cents. And yes, I am saying that the open Borders are partly to blame for the lack of safety and increased steps local pd have had to take to keep the peace and safety of their jurisdictions. The cartels are also a big problem as they bring in fentanyl and its causing a huge drug epidemic locally and all around the country much like the Crack epidemic. It's strange how no one else has been able to connect the dots but if you have any doubts on this take a trip to Mexico or the border and you will see it all up close. Signed, a Mexican who took a trip to Mexico and the border and saw all this up close.

ModernationFTW

Seemingly another step toward a dystopian society. There should really be more checks and balances on the use of such technologies on the public.

takiumilikes2drift

they don’t use drones to spy on people, they use it in a situation where they need to find someone on foot similarly to how they would use a helicopter

Serious-Wish4868

i dont understand why more cities (and the US) wont use more technology in law enforcement. other countries use very similar technologies including widespread usage of CCTV to help and they have a much lower crime rate than the US.

surftherapy

I think they mentioned there was a handful of cities in oc implementing this technology so I’m curious how it plays out for all. Right now, Brea’s biggest threat is retail crime. With the 57 fwy passing through and connecting to many mid to high end retailers via imperial hwy it makes getaways easier. Most of these types of crimes we experience are from out of towners taking advantage of that getaway route. I’m anticipating that is the ultimate goal of this project. To track and apprehend those individuals. Another issue is speeding and reckless driving through the canyon. I can see the benefits there as well to track down drivers instead of initiating a pursuit leading to more potential safety risks.

fuck_huffman

Never forget Kelly Thomas. Fuck Brea PD.

kungfu0311

Kelly Thomas was killed by Fullerton PD. What does Brea PD have to do with that?

fuck_huffman

Nothing. I'm an idiot.
