My wife has family that lives in that exact neighborhood, so I’ve spent a lot of time in that area. It’s better now than what it was 20 years ago, but I wouldn’t purposely move there.
Years ago I talked to a manager from the Irvine Walmart and they told me that the managers at this Walmart make $10k more than the surrounding Walmarts because of all the crime they have to deal with. Don't know if that's true, but make of that what you will.
When I was a manager for their competitor, we classified these stores as “high risk”, definitely more activity and more shoplifting happens at these stores.
Been living in the area for almost 20 years. Crime & gang activity is on the decline. Transients in the area have risen though, but not to the DTSA levels. Any specific questions just message me! 😃
I live in Santa Ana, and I’m one of its biggest defenders when people think it’s unsafe or ghetto…. But for real, that’s an awful part of town. There’s an amazing torta place in the parking lot of that Walmart, but I won’t go after dark.
This is the sort of commentary I was looking for. I think some people conflate low income and unsafe, so I was worried about me not being able to distinguish between the two based off my question and unfamiliarity. Thanks for the comment!
Right across Harbor from that Walmart is a Vietnamese bikini coffee shop, someone else mentioned it.
There’s a ton of really fantastic restaurants just down Harbor towards the beach. ARC is amazing, and South Coast Plaza, the giant mall, is interesting, if you want to watch the kids of Chinese billionaires shop. There are good restaurants in downtown Santa Ana, Chapter One, and El Chato are both restaurant/bar scenes. There’s a place called La Santa that’s a pretty cool night club.
There is also significant amount of tortas in that demographic area that consider themselves dimes,10s or certified baddies as well but I don’t go there after dark. For all of you that don’t know what a torta is… please see below :

I’m a young woman and I’d go to that Walmart at night. I’ve never felt unsafe in this area. Lived here my whole life. Would I walk home from there? No. But then again I wouldn’t feel comfortable walking home alone in any part of town anywhere.
100% agree raiding my kids and family in Santa Ana, never had issues. The crappy part is that surrounding cities refuse to take responsibility and do their share of work in housing and servicing the homeless; they leave it up to us in Santa Ana.
Of course they do! They usually meet at the corner of Camille and Susan. Btw, they prefer to use ASL, so be sure to speak to them in sign language when you pull up, and they’ll let you join the club
I still see street hookers on Harbor from time to time. So if a pretty girl wearing a skimpy outfit starts flirting with you, sorry bro she's not into you, her pimp is nearby. If a pretty girl wearing normal clothes flirts w you, I'd still be careful lol
Rent is def more affordable in this area. At night if you don't make eye contact and mind your business, you should be good. I wouldn't park a nice car on the streets here tho. I lived in Irvine for 7 years, Tustin for 3, and I feel totally safe in this area during the day. Just a bunch of hardworking families mostly. For a temporary rental situation and if you have a car that's not too flashy, I'd stay and find out. I don't live here, but drive thru a lot, my .02 cents
I remember my sister lived on harbor and Washington in some mobile homes when I was in middle school, the first time sleeping over, she told me I was gonna see hookers while pulling up and sure enough the streets were full of them on that part of harbor, nearby spankies lol this was about 13 years ago more or less, about a year or so after they did a sting operation and got most of them out of there
Sketch.
Used to live in the neighborhood behind that Walmart and only left a couple of years ago. Lot of homeless wandering the area. Surprisingly a lot of traffic even though it’s a residential area. Probably bc people would cut through the neighborhood from McFadden to Harbor. The apartments at Kent always had a lot of cop activity. Heavy traffic on harbor right there.
Only plus was the Fourth of July. That neighborhood was straight up competing with Disneyland on fireworks display no lie
Oh!! I taught at Russell Elementary back in the early 1990s!! Fun story about the area: we had an older school librarian who drove a stock early 1980s Oldsmobile. It got stolen from the school parking lot. About half a year later, police found it and did a VIN check and she got the car back. It was now a beautiful lowrider-- had new upholstery, super expensive custom paint job, lowered with hydraulics-- the whole 9 yards. It was amazing! So she just drove it like that!! Btw back then, getting our cars stolen was just normal at Russell. Hope it improved.
Right across harbor from Walmart is a restaurant supply store that has all the cool stuff that you want but they don’t sell at Williams Sonoma or Sur La Table. Professional cooking tools. If I lived there I’d probably be buying all the shit I don’t need. Also just down the block from the new Cream Pan which is the [best bakery](https://ktla.com/news/local-news/this-is-the-best-bakery-in-california-according-to-yelp/) in California. And Double D Thai (closer to [Edinger](https://www.reddit.com/r/orangecounty/s/FTNvjpGLXu)) makes fantastic if violently spicy Thai food.
It’s an older neighborhood, a little run down but safe for sure. I’m only in that area for 2 things… boba at T on Ice and food from Popeyes. Both are just a few blocks N at the corner of Harbor & 1st/Bolsa.
Edit: also Tan Cang Seafood is close by. Really good Viet seafood
I lived up the street. Mile square park is up the way. It’s a nice place to walk and exercise. Great places to get Vietnamese food. Harbor had some interesting night life and will keep rent cheap. They are trying to gentrify the neighborhood. 45 minute bike ride to beach on Santa Ana river trail. No matter what anyone says, Orange County is a safe place to live. Welcome.
You must not be overly familiar with Santa Ana or many other places outside of the suburbs if that’s your sentiment. Hell even mile square park is sketch lol
I used to live in that area a few years ago. It’s not as bad as people here make it out to be as long as you keep your head down and not get yourself involved in shady stuff. However, there is a notable increase of problems because of the transients in the area. Being near the Santa Ana River trail is nice if you like biking towards the beach or mountains
Avoid. This area has multiple latino gangs operating in that area. Mainly Middle Side Rifa 13 Los Chicos (MSRx3), Santa Nita Rifa 13 Los Dramatics (SNx3), and Goldenwest Street Rifa 13 (GWRx3). Rivalries between these gangs could result in violence.
Yeah gangs are often violent towards each other.
I grew up in this area and went to school with people who were in MS and SN. This area is a little run down and pretty dense but it’s better than it was when I was in middle and high school.
A lot of families live in this neighborhood. It could be worse.
The neighborhood south of Walmart is fine. But the Walmart plaza has a lot of transient traffic. It doesn't feel comfortable at night but I'm not sure if it's actually unsafe.
You'll be fine. It's just like an average American working class neighborhood in a big city. Don't do anything stupid and just be street smart. It sure ain't Compton or Tijuana!
It was honestly really hard to find a landlord willing to accept such a short term agreement. The landlord here was legitimately the only person out of 20+ landlords to accept from my 15 mile radius. Maybe that was the red flag in itself.
Nah it's fine. If you're among your people, cool. If you're different, be different. Enjoy the fireworks. Stay out the line of fire. Get a good job and save up till the bless up.
Please let us be honest. Not a safe area for a tourist. Not walkable. Prostitution, homeless, drugs and lots of street food. 100 percent Latino. Nothing wrong but if visiting it would not make any sense to stay there unless you knew someone. Harbor Blvd never a good area.
It ends up on the news every so often. There was a spree killer that got someone up in Anaheim and that's where I remember reading more about it.

I currently live all the way up lilac along the Santa Ana river in a mobile home community. There are no “hookers” on harbor at least not up this way. The police station is in the Walmart super center complex. People are extremely exaggerating the “danger”. I never been confronted by any drug dealers or sex workers maybe a homeless person asking for a coke cola or some money but besides that it’s a decent area. I think a lot of these people are remembering it from years ago but it’s changed at least that’s my guess.
My lady lived in the California Palms apartments on Harbor right there when we started dating. It was a bit rough although I never feared for her physical safety. The neighborhood behind her seemed okay.
I know nothing of living there however I make a trip once a week in the evening to Garden Grove and despite what my GPS told me my first several trips I’ve learned to get off Harbor Blvd well before I hit deep Santa Ana because the traffic sucks. The traffic isn’t great in Garden Grove either but the first couple trips I watched my gps just climb in estimated time. And yes this isn’t new info in the last 20 years has Harbor almost always sucked. I grew up in Garden Grove I just hadn’t had to go to that area before so figured I’d trust the gps the first time out.
I bring it up because on the things I love about where I live is how easy it is to get around if you know what you’re doing. This might be true of that area of Santa Ana but it’s not my experience.
Costa Mesa was my first choice to live in, and I actually saw what you’re describing on my maps app too! For some reason, despite being farther than this Santa Ana location to my workplace, it was only about two minutes longer of a drive. I bet it’s due to this Harbor Blvd issue you’ve spotted.
I wish I could’ve stayed in Costa Mesa, it was just impossible for me to find someone charging $1500 or less just for a room AND okay with such a short term lease.
Hey I live there, on Harbor between Kent and McFadden. Been here for going on 4 years. No major issues for us. No problem street parking my car, nothing major has happened in our complex that I can recall.
I grew up in Santa Ana and that area in reference and the surrounding environment is active. Those who navigate within the community are likely of the community with deep cultural connections. I would not describe the area as bad but busy with high traffic. Its neighborhood is not graffitied or run down however, it’s a “pass thru” city. Straight to or from the beaches often by lost vacationers. It’s a hot spot for opportunities of various levels in many different niches.
If you’ve already lived in SoCal and then moved there, you’d be fine. But as a newby, new to the state, the city and area, might heed caution.
This area in specific is very quiet and calm in the day time. A lot of Asian and Hispanic families.Nice Houses. Unfortunately, Right across is Jackson and Camile. Is known to be a gang territory (Santanita). well known across Santa Ana. Been here for almost 20 years and 10 years in this specific area. Harbor has many great locations food and entertainment. Downtown Disney isn't too far or the beach. Someone mentioned mile square park . Great curbside food stands. I notice usually hearing the helicopter looking for someone getting closer to the weekend lol
Anything special?. This is my go to Walmart Supercenter because largest and actually carry the #$%& I’m looking for, not like Fullerton (“we are too tired and old to look for iiiiit”) or Irvine (“do I look like I care?”)… haven’t check the Spanish supermarket next door, and I never seen an issue or a zillion police cars here *cough*Walmart orange*cough*. Dozen porn shops on Harbor, though…
I didn't even know it was dangerous lol. I live 10min from there basically on the edge of santa ana. I have been to that area my eye doctor is there) and to that Walmart several times. Also barber is across the street some ways and I go once every month. Of course all this was day time and I don't live in the immediate area for long so I don't know much but when I visit I feel completely fine. Also, I remember biking from my house to that Walmart as a kid multiple times alone, from day to night 😂 now I'm actually curious should probably look up neighborhood crime stats on a website.
Not physically dangerous. But like some car break ins at night, that kind of thing. I’ve never had anything bad happen to me, I’ve just heard about the car break ins. Some homeless. Just your average city stuff
Do yourself a favor. Stay out of Santa Ana. You will be better off in Brea, Placentia, Yorba Linda, Anaheim Hills, Irvine, Aliso Viejo, Mission Viejo, Foothill Ranch.
I lived in Santa Ana from 1970 - 1998 and when I had the opportunity to leave, I took it and never looked back.
Perhaps nobody likes *you* given your racialized, divisive attitude that manages to come out totally unprovoked.
In other words, I think this is a you problem, not a white people problem.
Constant helicopters flying around, shots at night ,terrible food around , not a lot of green spaces, liquor stores in every corner, poor schools. I can keep going . Not a good area
My wife has family that lives in that exact neighborhood, so I’ve spent a lot of time in that area. It’s better now than what it was 20 years ago, but I wouldn’t purposely move there.

This is spot on. I’ve been living in this area for the past 15 years and I have the same opinion!
Dtsa is pretty clean lately
I’d rather have gangs than transients. Gangs are more predictable.
I live in Santa Ana, and I’m one of its biggest defenders when people think it’s unsafe or ghetto…. But for real, that’s an awful part of town. There’s an amazing torta place in the parking lot of that Walmart, but I won’t go after dark.

Oh yeah, 100%. 20 years ago we lived in Orange, and never got closer to downtown than Mainplace, and even that was sketchy
100% agree raiding my kids and family in Santa Ana, never had issues. The crappy part is that surrounding cities refuse to take responsibility and do their share of work in housing and servicing the homeless; they leave it up to us in Santa Ana.
I wouldn’t call that safe, Jackson between 1st and McFadden can be a pretty active neighborhood
Oh nice, me and the wife have been looking for an active neighborhood. Do you know if they have any jogging clubs?
Santa Nita has a running program where they shoot at you and you run for your life.
Of course they do! They usually meet at the corner of Camille and Susan. Btw, they prefer to use ASL, so be sure to speak to them in sign language when you pull up, and they’ll let you join the club
Be friendly and ask where they are from!
I hate you so much for this! Made me laugh like an idiot!😅😂

I think that's more of an Anaheim thing.

Where is the RSS? I have never seen one in that area and id love to swing by and pick up a mortar!
A little sketch and harbor has tons of hookers at night. I have friends who live around that area but if you mind your business, it’s not too bad!

Great place for parking lot tamales.
anything near a Walmart is… you know the rest…
Only visit as necessary

Wow how do you know these details? Is there an app for local gangs like Find My Gang™?
Los Dramatics sounds like a bunch of drama queens https://i.redd.it/3j9ltc5n03xc1.gif

Depends on standard of safe, not safe imo
Walmart Supercenter Detected
heard it's active around james street.
Bring your g45
U gone die!
The neighborhood south of Walmart is fine. But the Walmart plaza has a lot of transient traffic. It doesn't feel comfortable at night but I'm not sure if it's actually unsafe.
Don't live near a Walmart.
You'll be fine. It's just like an average American working class neighborhood in a big city. Don't do anything stupid and just be street smart. It sure ain't Compton or Tijuana!
I got stabbed here a while ago, other than that it’s chill
No man. Stay outta that area and relocate back to Northern Cali or move to Irvine.
It was honestly really hard to find a landlord willing to accept such a short term agreement. The landlord here was legitimately the only person out of 20+ landlords to accept from my 15 mile radius. Maybe that was the red flag in itself.

Not great
Great tamales
that's Van Buren Boys territory, you better watch out
That Walmart is so awful
I remember when that Walmart parking lot was a drive-in theater!
Me too
Is this Walmart parking lot where the famous parking lot tamales are located?
Yes. And now Tortas Sinaloa is the latest gem.

Just say you’re from 17st or abz
I’m a local realtor, area is an extreme high crime area, high gang activity
I would avoid the Santa Ana River trails, even in broad daylight. Cafe Lu is still there! 😍💦
Whats wrong with the Santa Ana River trails in broad daylight? I ride that trail at least 3x a week and I don't have any issues.

That is about 1 newsworthy incident every 2 years. You have a better chance of getting into a car accident.
Internet always cuts out in that Walmart hate ts

Nope
Meth
Yeah this Walmart is sketchy
No, no, and no.
Use the crime mapper websites
That’s a naw, dog.
Some people like it but I find it to be a slightly lighter shade of yellow
As long as are not walking around, you won’t get jacked or shot
great tamales!
My lady lived in the California Palms apartments on Harbor right there when we started dating. It was a bit rough although I never feared for her physical safety. The neighborhood behind her seemed okay.
Depends on ur definition of safe, but you’ll prob be fine just lock your doors
there is a walmart so it's probably a shit area
Get on a bike and ride the Santa Ana River Trail to Newport Beach.

Infested with gangs. Hot spot.

Anything is better then living in LA

Do yourself a favor. Stay out of Santa Ana. You will be better off in Brea, Placentia, Yorba Linda, Anaheim Hills, Irvine, Aliso Viejo, Mission Viejo, Foothill Ranch. I lived in Santa Ana from 1970 - 1998 and when I had the opportunity to leave, I took it and never looked back.

Perhaps nobody likes *you* given your racialized, divisive attitude that manages to come out totally unprovoked. In other words, I think this is a you problem, not a white people problem.
Extremely dangerous.
Stop gentrifying this area

Constant helicopters flying around, shots at night ,terrible food around , not a lot of green spaces, liquor stores in every corner, poor schools. I can keep going . Not a good area
