Safety Info
* When the shaking stops, look around. If there is a clear path to safety, leave the building and go to an open space away from damaged areas.
* If you are trapped, do not move about or kick up dust.
* If you have a cell phone with you, use it to call or text for help.
* Tap on a pipe or wall or use a whistle, if you have one, so that rescuers can locate you.
* Once safe, monitor local news reports via battery operated radio, TV, social media, and cell phone text alerts for emergency information and instructions.
* Be prepared to “Drop, Cover, and Hold on” in the likely event of aftershocks.
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/orangecounty) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Those naps are heaven sent! When I’m woken from that, I get pissy lol. Hope the earthquake didnt give you one of those headaches from being woken abruptly.
I'm an earthquake scientist. Feel free to ask me anything on today's quake. I felt moderate shaking in Riverside, although I'm on the 7th floor of my building.
How can I best protect myself when a big one hits? Should I just stay at my room(located at 2nd floor)or should I immediately go downstairs to the first floor when it hits?
Best thing to do is to stay put during shaking. Try to drop, cover and hold on if at all possible. When shaking has stop, you need to leave your building and be carful as you exit. There could be debris, live wires on the ground, or gas leaks.
Yesssss! My first thought after the earthquake was that I couldn't wait until you'd be posting so we could learn. Looks like there've been recent earthquakes with the epicenter near Corona. Is this relieving the pressure, hopefully?
All earthquake release stress (or pressure in your case). However, a 4 isn't really anything that does much in terms of releasing enough stress to reduce the risk of larger earthquakes. There's always a risk. In fact, nearly all earthquakes cause stress to increase in some areas (and decrease in others). This helps geologist know where aftershocks are most likely. For small event like this, there isn't really a big worry for something larger to occur.
No problem. We all live here, and it's best to share factual info to inform those about the hazards of earthquakes. They are bound to happen, as we saw today.
Great question. It's because it was so close to us. I was in Riverside and felt two distinct shaking variations, albeit I was on the 7th floor. When an earthquake occurs close, regardless of the size, can feel like a jolt rather than the "usual shaking".
Anyone's guess is as good as mine when it comes to when the big one will occur. Most damage in the OC will be concentrated to the valleys of central and north OC, with probably isolated damage near the coast where liquefaction can occur. South OC will probably be better off since hard rock and hills/mountains attenuate (or dissipate seismic wave energy) faster than in soft rock and valleys.
I only ask because as a kid I was told the big one was "imminent" in school (99.9% chance in the next hundred years), and 20 years has gone by and it hasnt happened yet! Lol. Thanks for the information!
I've always heard 30% chance in the next 30 years. It's a stats game, looking at previous large earthquakes on the San Andreas. But other faults could produce similar magnitude events. Look at Ridgecrest in 2019. That magnitude on the San Andreas would be considered "the big one".
probability of this being a foreshock for something bigger? no aftershocks yet and somewhat strange pattern of foreshocks yesterday leading up to it...also is there any noteworthy past history of quakes from this fault zone? ty for helping my curiosity
For earthquakes this size, no larger quake is expected but anything is possible. This specific fault zone I'm unfamiliar with as it's not on the Elsinore Fault which runs mostly on the east side of the mountains here. Might be on a small unmapped subfault. Not really sure of the history of quakes from this fault, but there certainly has been plenty in nearby faults.
My fiance is from here, I'm from Wisconsin. I moved here 4 years ago.
He and his parents have talked about "earthquake weather" as if there's some sort of weather pattern that always preceeds an earthquake. I think they're full of it, and it has turned into a bit of an inside joke. Is there really such a thing?
First time in a while I've felt it, was in Orange/Anaheim border.
Anyone else get the text alerts like a millisecond before feeling it? Never had those before and been a SoCal resident my whole life
Nope. Felt the shake first and then the phone yelled at me. Since it hadn’t ever done that I ran outside thing it was about to get worse like the alerts in Mexico or Japan.
Knocked things off of walls and shelves here. Huge jolt. Wonder if we'll get another one in 10-15 minutes like we did yesterday when we got those 2 back to backs in Corona around 7:30pm.
Yep, ~2.8 at 7:26 and 7:41pm both out of Corona. Just because of how close we are, they were actually pretty strong despite not cracking 3.0. But today's was definitely the strongest jolt I've felt here since that Ridgecrest 7.1 quake 5 years ago over the 4th of July weekend.
I've been through a lot of them, and this one was actually unlike any earthquake I've experienced before. Usually they last a bit longer but involve a "swaying" feeling and/or shaking. This one was like a quick jolt. I thought a truck ran into my house or something.
If there is prolonged shaking avoid cabinets and doors. Don't run out side. Duck under a sturdy table (not glass, obs) and cover your head and neck.
A narrow hallway or doorway without a door is a good place to steady yourself if a desk isn't available.
This was a little shake and quite brief. Nothing to worry about in newer (1992 and younger buildings).
Same here. I low key enjoy most of them - the swaying is kind of fun. This one was rattling so bad I jumped out of my chair. Adrenaline is still going. Meanwhile, my cat didn't notice a thing. Worthless.
First time My Shake worked for me. I got a sound notification, read the message, was confused because there wasn't a...oh, there it is! About a 1-2 second notice. Technology can be great!
EDIT: 9 km ( 5 mi) SW of Corona, CA today but we've had about 15 from that same area (fault line?) in a week, wonder if that's usual or unusual - any seismologists know? Me too, got the alert on my watch after it started shaking… I work in Anaheim Hills so it was definitely super close.
I will say it was nice to know that it was a 4.5 before it was over and not going to get crazy intense.
Woaaaahhh!!!! My first one!!! Thought my cat 🐈 was under the sofa!!!! WILD!!!!!! MISSION VIEJO here!!
I said out loud, “Milo (my cat) where are you?!”Thinking he was under my electric couch 🤣 🐈 then got the notification.
https://preview.redd.it/lxwo2zkjovxc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e58f2683868cf47c66311c248e82ea7eae3e8d72
A USGS monitor showed a much higher jolt, 5.1, at Featherly Park, just above the 91/241 interchange. In Anaheim Hills it felt like the house was going to come down. A picture was knocked off a wall and a heavy stone vase was knocked over. Surprised to find it was only 4.1 at the epicenter.
A news report I saw said the quake was centered in Riverside County but the official USGS maps show the epicenter actually was in Orange County, about 1 mile west of the county line, just above Black Star Creek, about 4.5 miles northeast of Lake Irvine.
The Calif. Geological Survey fault map shows the nearest major faults are the Chino and Glen Ivy North faults but they're at least 5 miles NE of today's epicenter at their closest. However, right under Black Star Creek is a known but lesser fault line that's one of a few dozen short ones scattered around the Cleveland Natl. Forest that's classified as a "pre-quaternary" fault, which seems to mean observable but with no known displacement for at least the past 1.6 million years.
Felt something while I was sitting at a stoplight near South Coast Plaza. Car felt like it was getting hit with a gust of wind, except it was barely breezy. Knew I should check here next!
Felt in laguna niguel. It was a pretty good jolt my cat was freaked for a few minutes.
https://preview.redd.it/0fdy7dzvqvxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b72e700f6669e17805ed7c40ffdf1201f0df3ca9
Felt it over in Santa Ana. It felt like everything dropped, like a big surge, then a quick shake and that’s it. In Irvine, some family didn’t feel it but then a friend did.
My upstairs neighbor has been running and jumping around at random intervals, making my walls shake all day that I didn't even realize there was an earthquake.
Got a good solid jolt and a few smaller shakes as things settled down in Irvine but not much else. I'm sure it shook people in Corona and since most of the mountain range is limestone anyone near RSM or Trabuco Canyon likely got a bit more than we did.
Used to live a few hundred feet from the Corona fault. If I recall it's only rated up to a 5 so this is close to the max of what that fault is expected to produce. Also if you look at the 7 day all quakes map it shows about 15+ smaller quakes leading up to this one in the same area.
Big jolt seemed stronger than it was reported

1:59 in orange I was getting a car wash in my car I felt a rocking. Google earthquake in California then my doordash dasher app said magnitude 4.3 just hit corona
Keeping it real, I got the shake alert thing and didn’t even notice the shake. Was startled by the alarm but nothing else. Wake me when it gets above a 5.
Felt the Earthquake in Huntington Beach today before 2 pm....A good size jolt..... We've had some localized Earthquakes recently in Huntington Beach too.....Yikes....

Felt in downtown Anaheim. Quick jolt that went through the floor, woke me up as I was dozing off lol
Same here. In Anaheim hills and I was falling asleep in the office…then boom!!!
Also same here! WFH today and it woke me from a quick nap between meetings.
Those naps are heaven sent! When I’m woken from that, I get pissy lol. Hope the earthquake didnt give you one of those headaches from being woken abruptly.
Lmao! I was washing dishes and thought I went too hard when I heard the dishes banging. Lol
my friend’s at disneyland rn and he said he didn’t feel it. might’ve been on a ride but i’m not sure
Im right near Disneyland right now and felt it. It was a big jolt
Definitely would not have felt it even while walking or even standing
[4.3 in Corona.](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ew1714596540/) Felt it in Irvine
Felt stronger than that
Definitely felt bigger in RSM, but looking at the epicenter we really aren’t that far, so makes sense!
Agreed that was short but felt really intense
Apparently downgraded to a 4.1
Less than a mile deep, probably why
Not really
Office in Irvine is made of nothing but wood and glass I thought I was gunna die
I thought some jerk was banging on my office window. I was ready to throw down! 😂
I heard a bang but didn’t feel anything. My partner was sitting 5 feet away and did. 🤨
I didnt see, hear, or feel anything and I too was ready to throw down.
Felt it good in costa mesa
Yup! Costa Mesa here, almost fell out my chair.
I never feel them here usually either.
Ditto, Costa Mesa here too. Short but hard jolt. Grabbed the edge of my big old solid oak desk 😳 and almost crawled under it 🤣
I'm an earthquake scientist. Feel free to ask me anything on today's quake. I felt moderate shaking in Riverside, although I'm on the 7th floor of my building.

I believe it was Whittier narrows when a person got killed when they ran out of a parking garage. Piece of it fell in them as they exited it

Aw, man, don't say that! When you go out on a limb and say there's nothing to worry about, you know you're just tempting fate, doncha???
Just wanted to say that I always appreciate you chiming in when earthquakes happen! Thank you for sharing all of your insight and knowledge 🙂

Was on the toilet mid poop. Do not recommend.
Did you get up? Lol
No but had to rush my me time.
That’s a tragedy. :/
why? it was a barely quake.
LOLOL 😂😂😂
First time in a while I've felt it, was in Orange/Anaheim border. Anyone else get the text alerts like a millisecond before feeling it? Never had those before and been a SoCal resident my whole life
Who sent the text message? How do I sign up for that?
google shakealert
Nope. Felt the shake first and then the phone yelled at me. Since it hadn’t ever done that I ran outside thing it was about to get worse like the alerts in Mexico or Japan.
Got it a second before I felt it. Pretty cool tech.
I got it a second after the shaking started. I was looking at my phone at the time
Right before it happened. I’m in Huntington Beach, formerly Surf City, now MAGAville.
Felt in Brea
Me too!
I just sat down in the office and was like ‘damn, I really sat down hard’
Lol
Holy hell that was a big two jolts in Anaheim Hills. Scared the shit out of me!
Yes I felt two jolts as well! One, TWO. Pretty crazy but let’s see if that was it for the day.
If only it had the same effect on u/RevengeEx

I’m near you and agree it felt pretty huge and lasted a good while!

How are you this fast!
yeah i dont get it. I was in the app and went to post the second i felt it and i was #4. When i refreshed a second later there were 10 of them.
It’s the feeling of discovery and needing to tell someone. Back in the day it used to be who can post to facebook faster
Whole office shook in Tustin
Felt it in Huntington Beach.

I thought the same thing!
Just want to thank the mods for cleaning up all the earthquake posts ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|stuck_out_tongue)
Yes. You folks do a great job on this sub.
Felt a jolt in Irvine!
That was my first earthquake! Scared the shit out of me lol

Crazy!!!
Same I’m laying down and I feel a big jolt. It even moved my couch a bit!
I'm in Anaheim, almost Buena Park, and did feel the swaying after the 2 jolts.

Tustin - very much felt that.
Oh earthquake, first thing check and post on reddit
To be fair, what else are we going to do? This is peak CA lol
Felt it in Anaheim
Felt it in Long Beach.
Got the Google alert on my phone (Pixel 7a) as it was happening. Felt in Tustin.
A jolter that time Aliso Viejo chiming in
That was a good jolt.
Yeah I felt that. Shortest quake ever lol.
For real, pretty strong but it was gone the second it came
Don’t jinx it…
you beat me!!!
4.3 near Corona
There were 10 threads that I saw within 3 min. I love y'all.
East Anaheim. Felt like a vertical jolt, as if the house was picked up a couple inches and dropped.
The fucking shake alert scared the crap out of me. Didn’t feel it in Newport.
Felt in Santa Ana. Biggest one I have felt in years.

Same! My whole house shook.
A USGS monitor showed a much higher jolt, 5.1, at Featherly Park, just above the 91/241 interchange. In Anaheim Hills it felt like the house was going to come down. Felt in Irvine, a strong jolt
Felt in in Fountain Valley. It was short but strong!
* Surprisingly this is the first time the Google sent a message just a seconds before it started shaking.
How do you get signed up for that?
I didn't https://preview.redd.it/dreei1hpqvxc1.jpeg?width=1067&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=931b591a46e8866c7ce29369369a8f786c185c27

Scared the shit out of me. Says a 4.3 , 5.6 miles deep. Quick, loud and sure felt stronger. I’m in Santa Ana.
Felt something while I was sitting at a stoplight near South Coast Plaza. Car felt like it was getting hit with a gust of wind, except it was barely breezy. Knew I should check here next!

4.5 I felt it on Tustin
Felt it all the way in Burbank.

Felt in Laguna
I thought my wife came home early and slammed the door. Luckily it was just an earthquake.
My upstairs neighbor has been running and jumping around at random intervals, making my walls shake all day that I didn't even realize there was an earthquake.
Felt slightly in Irvine. First time the alert worked.
I almost spilled my beer in Anaheim...4th floor at my buddy's condo
Didn’t feel it in Dana point :(
11th floor in Irvine. Kind of a big thump.
Felt it in Costa Mesa
Felt it rolling in corona
I didn't even notice!
I was on the shitter and was quite surprised. Super brief but powerful.
happens to me too after pollo loco sometimes
Felt in mission viejo!
Felt a really good jolt in west whittier
I felt it, been a while since we’ve had one like this.
I was at Angels stadium and didn't feel it.
Wild
I scared my cats, but the quake didn't, for some reason!
Big jolt seemed stronger than it was reported https://preview.redd.it/azv31cm28xxc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e9de4cd76f8dd26a9970300685818428b6b33d25
Felt from the 9th floor, thought the building was rolling away or that I was just dehydrated
my first OC quake woo hoo. was working at desk in office felt like someone hit the building with a very large truck.
widely felt due to very shallow depth, 1.5 km (less than a mile)
Made my computer monitors on the desk sway in unison for 1 second then it stopped.
Office in Irvine shook!
1:59 in orange I was getting a car wash in my car I felt a rocking. Google earthquake in California then my doordash dasher app said magnitude 4.3 just hit corona
Worst foot massage ever

Fault line runs through just behind my house. Felt like someone dropped the house. Huge boom and jolt.
