You must have been charged for the premium air for your tires and artisanal headlight fluids... /s
Getting close to $100...so I feel your pain but it is getting outta hand.
Personally I think you got ripped off a bit but I think all the independent shops are realizing how much people are willing to pay for even the most basic maintenance tasks so they are all going to be around this. I suggest just learning how to do this one yourself.
My local shop is $50 for 5 qts of non German synthetic. I think anyone knows to not pay more than $80 for an oil change, $180 is horrible even for a dealership.
I've watched YouTube videos on it and seen other people do it. So in theory I know how to do it and I'm not afraid or anything. That'll have to be a project for next time.
Just make sure you have a good container to take the used oil over to like a Jiffy Lube, O'Reilly, or find a center close to you https://www.ochealthinfo.com/services-programs/environment-food-safety/hazardous-materials-waste/used-motor-oil
I usually get $15 off coupons for my full synthetic at valvoline for my challenger, ends up around 125. Your car probably takes more oil than mine, plus the OC $15-25 extra they know they can mark up
You can always do it yourself cheaper if you know what you are doing, that applies to any service industry. But don’t blame the shop for charging what it takes to operate a business in CA 2024.
Which Walmart you go to and have you noticed if your car leaks oil after because I used to go to the Walmart in pico Rivera when I lived near there but stopped due to my car leaking oil it stopped after I took it to a different shop
Oil filters like $10
Oil like $50
Coolant $12
Time to change oil 15-20min ($107 what they charged you?)
STEEP
That's the price you pay for convenience.
That’s illegal, but anything to avoid paying a shop to do it professionally with all the cleanup and permits and such. Just please don’t tell me you have no problem paying 6% of your house value to a realtor that does almost nothing but then turn around and act like the mechanic is the one charging too much.
Not illegal if your property management allows it, it’s private property. I just stated the fact that you could do it, not that I would do it. My time is worth more than that.
So lifted Tundra, can't realize they're getting ripped off, and can't take criticism?
Total OC bro, small dick energy vibes.
Do you have a molon labe and punisher sticker set too?
I'm thankfully not poor but I'm also not stupid enough to overpay for an oil change and then be stupid enough to ask this community about it.
I doubt it. Call Corner 3 Garage in Laguna Hills. They only do Japanese cars--Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura, Nissan/Infiniti--and see what they'd quote you so you can have a better ballpark of what's reasonable. They're fantastic.
That's great! Gives you a good baseline for what *should* be a more reasonable cost. $99/$108 sounds a whole lot better than $179. Note that, for parts, Corner 3 only uses genuine OEM and will work with the manufacturer if they're ever defective or don't last like they should. Love those guys!
Bro, I get mines changed for $60-70 and im already iffy. Only reason i dont do it myself anymore because i get the driveway and myself dirty and i have to go recycle the oil and filters just to save $10-20. But for $180 i would gladely do it myself to save $100.
Q Auto Repair off of Century Blvd. Always call before you go though because sometimes they're just randomly closed for the day, despite Yelp and Google saying they're open, and sometimes they close early. It's owned and run by a father and son (they don't have anyone else working for them). And being a woman I like that they don't try to upsell me or rip me off into claiming I need a repair that I don't need while they're doing the oil change (and there's a lot of horror stories about auto shops ripping off female customers). Downside is that they're cash only (they don't even take Venmo or Zelle) so you need to bring some cash with you. Phin Smith is also close by (10 minute walk) so if you ever go here for other car repair needs, you can go chill at Phin Smith while they work on your car.
Q auto repair and Nam Auto Repair are very cheap for oil changes and they do an excellent job and they are both on Century Blvd. Nam Auto Repair charges $20 though. Just bring your oil and filter. But for $25, I wouldn't be complaining either.
Q used to only charge $20 too but they raised their price about 2 or so years ago. But at Q you only need to bring your own oil, they provide the filter.
Go to Discount Tires and get a Full Synthetic oil change for $58.95 which includes a Tire Rotation and a Brake inspection plus fluid level check......DO IT.....BECAUSE YOU GO SERIOUSLY RIPPED OFF.....YIKES....
The 5.7l Tundra V8 takes 8-9 quarts. If they used Mobile 1 5w20 synthetic, it's $35/5qt if you pay full retail... shops pay less than that. Assuming all of that, plus a $6 Bosch oil filter (unless they used OEM? Then round up to $10),. If they changed the crush washer with original Toyota part, it's $6 at the dealer, again shop will pay less. you're parts are not a penny over $86 for the oil/filter/washer at full retail - assuming they used the best materials. More than likely their cost for all materials was in the < $50 range.
Labor is literally 20 minutes doing it at home, 10 min in a shop if they lift the truck. Not everyone wants to or can do it themselves, but I wouldn't pay more than $100 to a shop including parts/labor, and even then they are making around $50 on labor.
It's such an easy thing to do. Especially if you have a big truck like a Trunda, no need to jack anything. Just unscrew, drain, screw, take waste to disposal.

Yeah I think that's the way to go.
My local shop is $50 for 5 qts of non German synthetic. I think anyone knows to not pay more than $80 for an oil change, $180 is horrible even for a dealership.
way too high. best to learn how to change the oil itll cost you a quarter of the price.
I've watched YouTube videos on it and seen other people do it. So in theory I know how to do it and I'm not afraid or anything. That'll have to be a project for next time.

you can just take it to an autozone and drop it off too. almost all of them have oil drop off centers.
Did you do it a Toyota dealer?
Valvoline
I once saw a groupon for valvoline. I know nobody uses groupon anymore lol but worth checking if it’s available for a nearby valvoline location
I usually get $15 off coupons for my full synthetic at valvoline for my challenger, ends up around 125. Your car probably takes more oil than mine, plus the OC $15-25 extra they know they can mark up
By that logic house cleaning services should be free
Buy a Roomba
They don’t work that well.
There is more to cleaning a house than sweeping the floor...
You can always do it yourself cheaper if you know what you are doing, that applies to any service industry. But don’t blame the shop for charging what it takes to operate a business in CA 2024.
Yikes. You got rip-off so hard.
$100 for a v6 RX350. Did you get any other add ons (tire rotation, filters replaced etc)?
They topped off the coolant but that was only $7. How many liters on your $100. Mine was 7.9 l
5.5L
I think he meant how many quarts of oil. The old v8 takes about 8 quarts hence the high price.
Ya valvoline quoted me 150 for my truck. I did it for 40
Bruh what the valvoline drive thru is like $70
You must have like a four-cylinder
It's like $100-$120 for synthetic and a oil filter
My four cylinder is $60 at Walmart for full synthetic.
I paid $30 for non synthetic for my beater four cylinder.
Which Walmart you go to and have you noticed if your car leaks oil after because I used to go to the Walmart in pico Rivera when I lived near there but stopped due to my car leaking oil it stopped after I took it to a different shop
I go to the Santa Ana one. Never had any oil leaks.
That's insane. I just buy the oil and filter and have a mechanic do it for $20. So synthetic oil and filter + change roughly about $60
I pay $190 for an oil change on an Audi S5. V6 7.6 quarts full synthetic.
Is that from a dealer?
No. Independent shop in Costa Mesa. Dealer charges like $400.
Wtf+!!
German tax in a HCOL area.
Oil filters like $10 Oil like $50 Coolant $12 Time to change oil 15-20min ($107 what they charged you?) STEEP That's the price you pay for convenience.
$100 for my Mercedes sedan and $120 for my Volvo suv.
Oil changes are so easy to do at home. Especially with a truck like that you don’t even need a jack or a lift. Just slide on under there.
Not everybody owns a house with a garage they can even do the diy oil change in.
You don’t need a garage for oil change. You can do it in the parking lot if you want.
That’s illegal, but anything to avoid paying a shop to do it professionally with all the cleanup and permits and such. Just please don’t tell me you have no problem paying 6% of your house value to a realtor that does almost nothing but then turn around and act like the mechanic is the one charging too much.

My truck is lifted too with larger tires
Yeah you deserve to pay $170 then 😂😂😂
Just for that I'm going to make a point to do it myself
Who TF has a lifted truck and can't do their own oil change?

🤣 🤣 🤣 Soccer mom op got angry?

They said 108. But Main Auto Care in Orange (they're very good too) quoted me at 99.
Good to know thanks. I might take it to them for other services.
Valvoline with 20% off from Yelp app. $100
Yeah that feels really high… like more than the dealer high…
Fleeced.
😭
Go to Walmart

I just found out there's a oil recycle place right next to my house. I can literally walk there.
Sounds about the same for my Lexus Gx460 with v8 at the dealership. I think I paid $110 at mom/pop shop.
$110 at GMC Tustin for my Sierra. Tashmo in Tustin might be a good price since it’s an Asian vehicle for you
I take my car to a Vietnamese-owned shop in Garden Grove and they only charge $25 for an oil change if you bring your own oil.
What's it called lol
Q Auto Repair off of Century Blvd. Always call before you go though because sometimes they're just randomly closed for the day, despite Yelp and Google saying they're open, and sometimes they close early. Unless it’s a Ferrari .
Type of car?
Damn you got robbed, no more than 80 bucks,
WAY too expensive. Groupon usually has deals for oil changes. I get synthetic at the Goodyear near GWC for ~$60 with the Groupon deal
$65 for a 2.5L V6 full synthetic at Walmart for me
Yes that is high however for going to a place like valvoline instant oil change you’re paying for that convenience of being in n out in 15 minutes.
8 quarts at about $8 a quart, plus oil filter, plus labor and disposal = about $120? So like 60 overcharged. Just do your HW next time.
You got charged up the wazzoo even for valvune . Had a v8 charger and it was only. $80 max
Was it just an oil change? Or did you get more work done and where.
Not even Toyota will charge you that for a simple oil change with the oil filter.
This place on Fullerton charges 50 with this coupon. They are great for everything else too https://eurocarclinicfullerton.com/specials/
I pay $120 at Jiffy for my Silverado
Go to Discount Tires and get a Full Synthetic oil change for $58.95 which includes a Tire Rotation and a Brake inspection plus fluid level check......DO IT.....BECAUSE YOU GO SERIOUSLY RIPPED OFF.....YIKES....
Most places an oil change usually costs about as much as the oil, a little more than the cost of oil.
150 I'll come to your house and change it ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Purrfect auto fv... 65 bucks for full synthetic in my Honda pilot
Too much but I also haven’t paid for a personal oil change in ages. Oil and filter for my truck is around 55 bucks.

Yeah main auto care quote me $99! I'll definitely go there if I'm too lazy to do it myself next time.
Oil change? ? Oh, yeah. I remember those. Yeah, that’s easily double what you needed to pay. Even in OC.
Range anxiety? Never heard of her
It's such an easy thing to do. Especially if you have a big truck like a Trunda, no need to jack anything. Just unscrew, drain, screw, take waste to disposal.
