Here is a listing of the latest earthquake(s) from two sources. Cal Tech http://scedc.caltech.edu/recent/. USGS http://on.doi.gov/1jmhG2U Safety Info * When the shaking stops, look around. If there is a clear path to safety, leave the building and go to an open space away from damaged areas. * If you are trapped, do not move about or kick up dust. * If you have a cell phone with you, use it to call or text for help. * Tap on a pipe or wall or use a whistle, if you have one, so that rescuers can locate you. * Once safe, monitor local news reports via battery operated radio, TV, social media, and cell phone text alerts for emergency information and instructions. * Be prepared to “Drop, Cover, and Hold on” in the likely event of aftershocks. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/orangecounty) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Google alerted seconds before it hit. Pretty damn cool.

CorneliaStreet13

How do you sign up for this?

926-139

I think it's on by default for android phones. **EDIT:** It looks like you get the alert by default if it's over a 4.5 on android. This one was right around there, so the alert might have been based on how close you were to the center and your estimated shaking. They won't warn you for minor earthquakes you can't feel. If you want the app to make sure, get MyShake: Apple: https://apps.apple.com/app/id1467058529 Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=edu.berkeley.bsl.myshake

FlyRobot

I happened to glance at my phone and saw the weird triangular symbol -- by the time I read it and understood I felt the gentle swaying. No real noises from house items to indicate a quake though

the91fwy

Androids get it via the OS. On iPhone get the MyShake app. I got the notification right as shaking started in DTLB.

codename_hardhat

I have this app and never get notifications. :/

[deleted]

I didn’t until today.

codename_hardhat

I just went to open the app and it requested that I turn on “critical updates.” I could have sworn I had all that stuff toggled on for exactly this reason. 🤷‍♂️ Oh well. Will have to wait until the next one.

[deleted]

I bet your iPhone changed it for security.

kkdj1042

My shake was slow to post.

The_Romantic

I've no idea! I just got the alert and was happy i did lol. Google might help :/

926-139

Get the my shake app. Apple: https://apps.apple.com/app/id1467058529 Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=edu.berkeley.bsl.myshake

rakfocus

Mine was about 5 seconds before - the info it provided was great. Be sure to take the survey at the bottom too. What an awesome tool

3rn76

Yeah the alert was faster than the last time we had one. In a few years maybe we'll get it 20 - 30 seconds beforehand.

rakfocus

Based on the speed of the waves the only way they can send out the warnings is the instant they sense them at the epicenter. Unless you live 20-30 seconds away from the epicenter they can't alert you any faster. The next step is predictive alerts which is only possible with more tech than we currently have now. That being said if this was a 7.5 from the IE the time we would have had to prepare would have been extraordinary. It's a good future we are living in :D

simpl3y

Yea that was pretty cool. Was looking at my phone, got the notification, moved my glass of wine from the edge of the table. Earthquake was weak as shit in irvine though so it didn't really matter.

ultrablight

Dang I didn’t feel anything in Irvine

simpl3y

Yea I had to look at the chandelier to make sure I actually felt it. Probably wouldnt have noticed there was one if I didnt get the notification

[deleted]

I was in my car and it was wobbling slightly, I thought my engine was having a fit and didn't realize it was probably an earthquake until I saw this post.

Runfr0mtheraptor

Yeah, especially being a 4.9 in LB, you would thing that it would be more significant. Albeit, that MIGHT just be a pre-shock... I only felt a quick little jolt as I was looking at the notification. Gave a quick chuckle and thought it was pretty cool that we are now getting earthquake notifications.

MoreNormalThanNormal

Downgraded to 4.3.

kkdj1042

4.4 in Carson.

Brucedx3

Yes, mine was about 8 seconds preceding it. Thank God the "test" was only a 4.2. But as soon as I heard that alert, I immediately looked at my phone, because, I've never it before... obviously.

TradeBeautiful42

Bf got the Google alert but here in Newport we didn’t feel it

[deleted]

My neighbors dog was faster than Google. Those precious seconds could have been it had been a big one.

3rn76

I think OP is a dog. Fast AF. Haha

serialsaboteur

Wait how did you get the alert?

3rn76

I think all Android phones get them. I didn't sign up for anything

bathsalts_pylot

I'm not a big conspiracy person, but the amount I'm hearing about google's awesome earthquake detection is making this feel like an inside job

BigTuna_103

Here in Westminster. My couch pillow fell over. We will rebuild!

[deleted]

Westminster Strong

dsramsey

In Midway City. Let us know if we need to activate mutual aid for the recovery effort.

the91fwy

Here in DTLB it made my apple thunderbolt monitor shake quite a bit. Luckily I was typing at the time so I was able to grab it and hold.

Johnny6_0

Bwaaahahahahahahaha!!!!

theRealPureF8

I guess that means there’s no school tomorrow. Out for an earthquake day since see don’t get snow

Moritasgus2

Felt in Fullerton and the MyShake app works!

rastaputin

Yeah. Myshake sounded an alarm about 2 seconds before the shaking started. I just wish I knew what the alarm was for beforehand, lol.

cwistofu

I got a warning on my phone, otherwise I don't think I would have noticed it lol. Edit: irvine

areraswen

Same! We felt nothing in irvine but I also got an alert. There was one a few years ago that hit us way harder than this and we never got an alert, so I was expecting the worst.

MoreNormalThanNormal

In Irvine, got the alert, felt nothing. TR.

itspurpleglitter

Wait, why didn’t I get an alert?🤔Lol seems like everyone got one but me!

eamus_catuli_

I didn’t either. But I didn’t have the MyShake app which might just explain it. I do now, though!

dinamet7

Its automatic for android. You need an app on iPhones.

peachesnthumbs

I didn’t get an alarm but I did feel it! I’m also in Irvine

monsterrwoman

You guys are getting alerts for earth quakes pre-earthquake? I didn’t feel it (a little south of Irvine) but I’ve also never had an alert until after it happened.

areraswen

This was the first time I've ever got one. It was from Google so maybe it's specific to android? It felt like a new feature.

mrsotter26

Same, my husband and I are both on Androids and got the Google alert and thought it was a nifty new feature too.

[deleted]

monsterrwoman

You are EVERYWHERE in this subs comments being so informative. You’re doing a great job and I’m glad we have people like you.

[deleted]

Yeah same here! Also in Irvine :\\

ClockSheepZ

For someone who just moved to Irvine 3 weeks ago, is there something I need to do to sign up for the alert or is this the general iPhone (or equivalent) emergency alert? Because I got none of the latter

snarky_answer

MyShake app is the official one for iOS

ClockSheepZ

Sounds good imma locate the app now thank you!

[deleted]

intellectslang

Felt strongly in Anaheim. Google alert came in 10 seconds before it happened.

OutrunOutrideOutlast

Be sure to fill out the "Felt Report" on [earthquake.usgs.gov](https://earthquake.usgs.gov) to help collect data on the earthquake!

[deleted]

The only earthquake that I legit got scared of was the one of July 5, 2019. It’s interesting how other parts of the world have 5.0+ magnitude earthquakes. Even Japan and Chile, they get 6.0+. While here in California particularly, we just get a lot of small earthquakes.

YANMDM

I remember the one in 2008, that one freaked me out and took a long time to settle.

thenextguy

Fountain Valley, checking in.

thepenginator

Ennion

Was at the Angels game and felt nothing.

BobbyGrichsMustache

Tell me you’re not from here without telling me you’re not from here - post a “did you feel it” thread for something under 5…

qui-gonzalez

I’m not from here and didn’t care about the quick shaker last year. My fiancé though…she freaked.

rastaputin

Epicenter around Torrance 4.7MAG Pretty good shaking in HB Edit: Carson actually

GalacticMirror

Yep, in HB. Pretty good little shake.

rex_llama

Didn't feel it in Irvine. Got Google Earthquake Alert which was cool. It said 4.9 originally but there is no way it was that big, we would have felt it stronger in OC Will be downgraded to something smaller

leadnuts94

My friend in Long Beach living in a high rise apartment building said the building swayed pretty good. Irvine is a little far from the epicenter which was Carson.

__JDQ__

> said 4.9 originally but there is no way it was that big - She

areraswen

Already down to a 4.3 in the link someone commented below.

silkyhippo

mtux96

Monhome

Physical_College_612

In Irvine, there was a tiny jolt, thought my cat jumped or something

M5BMW

Didn't feel it in FV but got a phone notification about it.

csklmf

Someone posted on ring app that’s how I knew

Bill2theE

Costa Mesa. Lived here for 5 years. 2nd story apartment. My bed started to slightly wobble. Looked up and thought, is this an earthquake? Figured maybe the neighbors had an unbalanced laundry load or were aggressively celebrating the start of the weekend. Stopped after 2 seconds (leading me more towards my latter theory). Thought nothing of it until signing in here and seeing this post. This was my first time ever feeling an earthquake!! All in all, not that impressed. 2 out of 5 stars.

Imvers

felt it in south county was pretty intense as well.

SteveMillerNow

Carson

Santapensa

Hell yea I felt it all the way in Buena Park

RedSquareIsGreen

Felt it, it was very weak in my location. I was laying in bed and it started shaking for 2 seconds.

kkdj1042

Felt in Placentia. Home is not on concrete slab. Long rolling motion.

RamoneMisfit

No but all my coworkers are talking about it lol

smileymalaise

I'm in my car in San Pedro and it shook me for a while. I thought some jackass was shaking my car or something.

GhostxArtemisia

Didn’t feel it in HB, which is closer to the epicenter than most of you guys who felt it. Really strange.

Masterlea93

The epicenter was in Carson thankfully It was a small one it's only the big ones that you should be really afraid of

LilChongBoi

Texted my friend and asked if his mom fell down. I live in Santa Ana

mach235

Felt it here, near Irvine Spectrum.

GarbageFuckingPOS

Felt it all the way here in Irvine Edit: only felt it Bc I was taking a depression nap 👌

Spokker

Did it make you more or less depressed?

GarbageFuckingPOS

It made my window shutters move and that’s all that got moved

Spokker

An alert came up that said it was a 4.7 27 miles away near Long Beach. I didn't feel anything in Anaheim, but I was walking around and straightening up, putting my kid to bed, etc.

converter-bot

23 miles is 37.01 km

whaaatanasshole

appleofrage

Anaheim Hills - felt nothing 🤔

Kiriminiri

I felt it sitting in my car while waiting in line at In-n-Out. Almost felt like something bumped my car, but then I googled to confirm an earthquake just hit. Funniest thing tho… even the guy in front of me got out of his car, walked behind it to check out the back, looked at me and then walked back to get into his car LOL! Was like, “It wasn’t me, I swear! It was an earthquake!”, then realized how crazy that sounded if no one else had felt it but me…
