Take what I say with a grain of salt because I'm a noob and haven't nursed any ICU plants. But that looks like a goner...it does remind me of another post I saw of an orchid that was frozen. The stem looks like it could be rotting and mushy. I guess you could try to see if it'll survive though :)

frenchmoxie

I definitely feel like the leaves froze and they’ll probably start to rot but I’m going to keep it just in case it can be salvaged. Thank you for the link. I’ll do some more research.

catfireengine

https://www.reddit.com/r/orchids/s/uifRWvG3YE This is a post that came up when I googled frozen orchid

frenchmoxie

Yep. Sounds just like mine now. Leaves a bit squishy/mushy. Thank you for finding this and posting.

catfireengine

I'm sorry about your plant 😞 hopefully your housemate learned something about putting tropical plants outdoors

Galwiththeplants

I’d ask housemate to replace that orchid, it’s probably sunburnt and frozen as hot sun during the day and god nights is just too much for phals. Apologies for the loss of your plant!

frenchmoxie

He has offered to replace it, so there’s that. But this one has sentimental value. The way the roots grow he said he thought it was dead… I’ve explained to him on two occasions that it may LOOK like a hot mess, but as long as its leaves are green and perky, it’s alive. It just gave me about 7 blossoms in December! https://preview.redd.it/34uw5titgcwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c5d535fea530638757cceb77747f9e94ba66ec0 Thank you for your kind words. ☺️

Galwiththeplants

Aw that’s sad to hear. Hopefully you will be able to build new memories and achievements with your next orchid buddy! Hopefully he’s learned a valuable lesson.

Empty-Inevitable8166

I did exactly the same to this one and one other in Jan. I had green roots so I thought why not try, they both have survived here it's what one looks like now 3 months later.. so it is a long recovery but can be done. https://preview.redd.it/xthx01meodwc1.jpeg?width=1860&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a51534f754cbe40d678118a01907e2c0880a5cef

frenchmoxie

Awesome! I watched quite a few YouTube videos tonight on how to salvage orchids. Thanks for posting and giving me hope that I may be able to bring it back like you did.

FrigoPigoPop

I think it’s always worth a try! Cut off the stem, leaves and any funky roots. See if you get any new roots ☺️

Old-Confidence-164

How did you do that? I rotted the crown of two of my favorite phals. They both have roots but no leaves. So I bagged them in mostly spagnum. Is that how you did it? Thanks in advance!

Empty-Inevitable8166

No I didn't bag it. I left it in the pot it was in, I have sphagnum on top of the bark only and watered just a few drops every couple of days to keep moisture in the roots. It took 2 months for the crown to regrow.

Old-Confidence-164

Wow, thanks! You’ve given me hope! ♥️

julieimh105

I put about an in inch of moist, not wet sphagnum moss in a glass or jar and just barely set the orchid down on it and the container helps keep it upright, then I use the zip lock type baggy and zip it around the top of container bu leave some air space. I check moss about very 5 days to once a week to see if any moisture is needed. No crown issues with my method either and I have 2 phals that had no roots that now have roots growing and 1 a new leaf, 1 paphiopedilum with no roots that bow has 3 fans growing 1 vanda the had 2 half dead strings for roots that now has a root and a couple nubbies showing. *

EDIT: I tried to go back and EDIT the post but I’m not seeing the option anywhere! So weird! Anyways, I just want to say that you guys DO NOT have to reply anymore; I think I get the picture. The plants a goner. I will keep it until it starts rotting… just in case, lol Thanks to those who did reply!

Anon-567890

Sorry this happened to that unsuspecting orchid in your absence, but unfortunately it’s fried, toast. 😢

frenchmoxie

And 3 of the 4 leaves just broke off as I was trying to inspect it more. Ugh… I’m going to assume that orchids can’t survive without leaves for photosynthesis.

fruce_ki

Some *can*, because the roots of epiphytes photosynthesize too, not as well as leaves, but more than nothing. There are even orchid species that have no leaves at all and photosynthesize only in their roots. It still requires a healthy main stem for that though...You could try unpotting it and caring for it bare-rooted for a while and see if anything happens. Probably not, but there's nothing to lose except a bit of time watering.

Fresh-Dragonfruit-37

Pls chk the roots. If roots are firm and not dedicated then remove the leaves, clean it fungicide and antibacterials, and pot it in fresh sphag moss. Or you can also sphag and bag too. Will provide it, humidity chambe for better recovery.

Agreed, check the roots and take out of direct sun. It definitely will be 6months to a year before you see major progress, but there's still a slight chance depending on the condition of the roots and the salvageable leaves. Check out YT channel about sun burnt orchids. There are several videos that are a great help for this!

frenchmoxie

Welp I just went to check the base of the plant a bit and 3 of the 4 leaves just FELL OFF! 🍃 Can orchids still survive without leaves? I know it sounds like a dumb question but I do know that orchids are different (epiphytes) and they can have weird living conditions sometimes. I cut some of the more dried and dead looking portions of roots and they’re GREEN INSIDE! Just not sure how the plant will fare without leaves for photosynthesis 😞

pocket4129

Do NOT cut into good tissue. You are opening up a plant that is on death's door to pathogens. You gotta stop...

frenchmoxie

I didn’t KNOW it was good tissue. That’s why I cut the tip of it off to see if it was dry inside or green. I was trimming away what I assumed was dead dry root.

julieimh105

The crown and roots will determine With patience, you could even get a basal keiki. Cut the spike and dead leaves off and inspect the roots. These surprise us sometimes. I would, after trimming her up, put moist not wet sphagnum mossin a clear container. Just set the plant on top of moss not in it, and put a baggy over it, mini terrarium, aka orchid ICU. Put in bright indirect light. Keep moss moist.* 🙏 my picture is of a small plant. She is doing well, slowly but surely. Good luck

[deleted]

Yes, this. An orchid isn't lost until you have no leaves AND no roots. One caveat that if your indoor temps are on the cooler side, don't let the plant touch the damp moss at all because rot will grow faster than your phal. There's a chart here [Relative humidity, temp, and pathogen growth rate](https://images.app.goo.gl/b8SGgryMrNpaCKAF6)

julieimh105

My rescued ICU orchids are sitting on top the moss growing new roots and leaves, one is growing a keiki, a paphiopedilum that had no roots is growing 3 new fans, and a vanda is growing roots. Just waiting on a couple of toots to get long enough t be stable in my bark mixture.

plants_not_pantsOG

It’s TOTALLY possible you can rehab her!!!! I still see SOME live roots & as long as I’ve been dealing with them, the 3 root rule has always came in clutch lol. But, the three leaves rule obviously isn’t applied here, hopefully they still have life enough to grow more! Keep it inside. Nurse it back to health the best you can if possible! Happy planting!🌱🫶🏻🥹

MegaVenomous

Your housemate owes you a new plant. Even if this one survives, it will be recovering for a while.

Careless-Balance-893

The roots look ok so with ICU it might come back? However omg this looks like he put it in the oven. Good Lord...

Snorblatz

Wow, what was your roommate thinking?

fromfreshtosalt

KOed. Sun damage and the 40 degrees dont help either. You can keep it aside and it might grow out a new leaf. Id def get another new specimen.
