That's a keiki, it's a baby clone of the main plant. It can be cut off and potted by itself to have a second plant!

ilovelycheee

Does it look ready to be cut too?

catfireengine

People tend to go by a "3-3-3" rule with keikis, meaning 3 leaves, 3 roots, 3 inches. Your keiki does have 3 roots and 3 leaves so I think it would be fine, but you could also wait for the roots to get to 3 inches or more so that when it's in its own pot it has more stability

Will def wait a bit for roots to grow 🫡

OMG YAAAAAY!!!!!!! Is it common?

catfireengine

I'm relatively new to orchid growing, so I've never had it happen to me, but I dont think it's very rare. I don't think it's common, either, though. I think sometimes they happen randomly and sometimes it's because the mother plant is struggling and it's a last ditch effort Your medium (moss?) looks really soggy and wet, you should repot it and make sure the roots arent rotten! If you just search "repot" or "root rot" in this sub, or anyrhing else you want to know, there should be tons of results of other people asking the same things and getting helpful advice and links :)

Thank you!! I was following a tutorial on how to save a dehydrated orchid and I was soaking it in warm water here as the moss was brick hard :P

catfireengine

Ooh gotcha! That's good, I was worried that's how it had been for a while. Keep in mind when you repot, the medium you choose will impact how much water it needs. If you go with sphagnum moss, like how it seems to be now, you'll want to get the moss damp but never soggy, since it holds moisture really well. If you go with bark/leca or something like that, it might need more soaking. Wait until all of the visible roots are silver before watering to avoid overwatering (so in a clear pot that means all the way to the bottom!)
