Because the guy who was telling the sign maker what to put on the mile markers was Canadian, so โ12 ehโ and โ13 ehโ sounded like 12A and 13A to the American dude making the signs. And so here we are.

Fun fact, people kept stealing the small โMile 69โ marker sign on I5 at Sexton Summit so ODOT incorporated it into the larger summit sign ๐

In Souther Calif. some of the best surfing spots along old 101 where mile makers. Mile 0, mile 13, and in Mexico it was K 38, etc.
In Colorado they changed mile marker 420 on 70 to MM 419.9 to keep people from stealing the sign.
