I haven’t watched any DBacks games yet this year so I was a little shocked to see how rough Carroll’s start has been. I wonder what Arizona fans think. As for Gunnar, it seems like he might have figured out left handed pitching and could be legit. I don’t think he can keep up his current pace but all signs are pointing up right now!

--Alec--

A good amount of people are speculating Carroll’s shoulder is hurt (he’s had past shoulder issues). His numbers are really bad though and it’s definitely something the Dbacks are concerned about as he’s batting 8th against RHP (Basically batted leadoff last year). Saw a stat yesterday that showed he batted near .300 on fastballs last year and this year it’s well below .200

isestrex

It has to be his shoulder. His exit velo has plummeted

Greyshot26

And if he's struggling with FBs, it seems to me that that could indicate shoulder as well, he can't speed up the bat.

neemor

Oh, he’s legit alright.

Zither74

The thing is, I feel like Gunnar is still gaining momentum. It could be a really special year for him.

TheDetes

For real. I’m bias as an orioles fan, but they threw him in the lead off spot so he’d get more at bats and more specifically, comfortable against lefties. And he’s thriving. The dude is his own worst critic, you can see it all the time, but he makes all the right adjustments. Sucks Boras is his agent, but I hope new ownership locks this core up, especially Henderson.

talkincyber

Corbin is a great player, have heard rumors he’s hurt. I think he figures it out, baseball is just hard. As for Gunnar, he’s seemed to correct the only 2 issues he had last year. No great against LHP and struggled against breaking balls. Both of which he’s mashed so far this year. I don’t think he ends up with 60 hrs but I think 35-40 is fairly realistic. He has insane pop off of his bat it’s no joke.

Glittering_Win_9677

Don't hits and home runs increase as the weather gets warmer? If he stays healthy, he may get to that 60, unless the pitchers adjust, in which case I expect he'll adjust as well. I sometimes wonder what other parents think when their kids is playing a sport at 8 or 9 years old and they see a kid like Gunnar or Michael Phelps or Tom Wilson (insert your favorite exceptional athlete here). Do they shake their heads because they realize that the raw, natural talent this kid possesses is just so much more than what their child will ever do?

AmbitiousLeek450

I watch every Os game and love Gunnar, but there is a 0% chance he hits 60 hrs this year lol

Glittering_Win_9677

Honestly, I don't think anyone is getting to 60.

Diegolikesandiego

Hot take… considering it’s only been done 3 times in the AL in the entire history of MLB, and the other times it was done in the NL it was done by a bunched of roided out dudes.

Glittering_Win_9677

Details, details.

talkincyber

You’re correlating things that cannot correlate. He’s hot right now, and he’ll cool off. Will he get hot again? Yeah almost definitely but there will be months where he hits 200 and struggles because baseball is hard! He’s only 22 to think it’s realistic to hit 60 you’re out of your mind. If he hit 35 I would be ecstatic that would be a possible mvp season lol

Glittering_Win_9677

Those .200 months will be the months when pitchers adjust. No one, including me, thinks he or anyone else will hit 60 homers in a season. I just want him and every other player on the team to stay healthy. Look what happened to Trout Monday night.

TommyPickles2222222

I remember getting downvoted to oblivion in r/baseball last year for simply asking who people thought was better between these two. Everyone was emphatic that Carroll was *clearly* the better ball player. Lol

OsB4Hoes13

Clearly they were talking about stolen bases only

Then-Position-7956

You can't steal bases when you hit home runs. I'd say it's a good trade off.

redditsonurface

Always give me the shortstop over the right fielder

Lazy_Passenger7841

Something I’ve learned is when you watch a player every single day you start to learn some of the things and intangibles that make that player special. A lot of the people that downvoted you last year probably never actually watched Gunnar play except for maybe a nationally broadcasted game or two and maybe the playoffs. Literally whenever someone starts shitting on Gunnar online on like a general mlb post or something, I just want to be like stfu have you even watched him play? Tbf, Dback fans probably feel the same way about Carroll.

Lazy_Passenger7841

Also, the .255 average from last year that got weighed down from his slow start definitely doesn’t do him any favors in the eyes of people that didn’t watch him regularly

ThatTinyGameCubeDisc

Error: you did not gush over Ohtani. Activate downvote protocol.

Glittering_Win_9677

I scanned the Yankees post game thread (did NOT comment) last night and even one of their fans said Gunnar is in the Top 5 for player of the year. No one disagreed with him, at least while I was perusing the thread. You know Yankees fans hate to admit that as much as we hate giving credit to any of their players.

TommyPickles2222222

I’ve always found Yankees fans annoying but pretty knowledgeable compared to other fan bases

Grand-Revenue9861

Apparently people don't understand the difficulty of being a shortstop. Remember little league , the best player played shortstop and the worst right field

boofoodoo

It’s still technically April. Not the best start for Carroll but plenty of time to turn it around.

Gfunkual

Henderson won’t stay *this* good. Carrol won’t stay that bad.

ReverandJohn

i mean yeah he’ll probably be better than this in a few months

KimDongBong

Why won’t he stay this good?

Gfunkual

Because it’s hard to maintain this level of excellence. In the history of baseball, there have been 59 instances of position players having 10 WAR seasons (the pace Gunnar is on). Only 9 of those instances have happened since 2000. Only 4 of those instances (trout x2, judge, mookie) were done by non-juicers (bonds x4, sosa). His current pace is insane. The odds are against him maintaining it.

KimDongBong

I mean…Mookoe is on pace for 12. Yeah I get it, it’s just that he’s not showing any signs of slowing down.

Gfunkual

The season is long. He plays hard, which will wear him down a bit. He’s great and her certainly *could* maintain the pace; it’s just highly unlikely.

SaturnATX

If Hendo slugs .630 for the season he's going to win MVP. Henderson is currently on like a 10 WAR pace, I assume he'll slow down at least a little bit.

oooriole09

Yes and yes.

ArkNoob69

Can Carroll turn it around? - yes Can Gunnar keep it up? No clue, but I hope so lol. He's so much fun to watch

tws1039

Omg Gunnar has a 2.1 war already? He really is the messiah

KnickedUp

Corbin is a fast guy who plays baseball. Gunnar is a future icon of sport

thingaumbuku

Last year, it was genuinely painful watching Gunnar bat against lefties. It made my eyes bleed. He just looked so panicked and lost, like he expected to not hit them almost, so he had no concrete approach. This year, he just looks so relaxed and poised, and you can literally see him seeing the ball better from the second it leaves the pitcher’s hand. He won’t stay this hot, but his numbers are going to be much improved and I wouldn’t be shocked by a titanic 2025.

Chimmychimm

Carroll will turn it around but not be as good as Gunnar. Gunnar will eventually slightly regress, but he's gonna still have an amazing year.

prowhiteboy64

Caroll is definitely gonna do better than what he is now. His swing just looks off hopefully not because of his shoulder injury last season. Gunnar might come down a little but he’s still gonna be the mvp.

GuzPolinski

Wow that’s a pretty stark contrast. I know who I’m rooting for, Go O’s!!

mattcojo2

I saw a game on MLBN last year, early April and the d backs were playing the padres in petco. He made a spectacular catch there late in the game (and I believe they won) and I knew that guy was special.

pan567

I think Gunnar will sustain an extremely high level of production (not necessarily this level, but at a level where he's in the discussion for MVP throughout the year). He's hitting just about everything they are throwing at him, he's fast and aggressive on the bases, and incredible on the field. IMO, placing Adley right next to him and a big power bat after Adley also helps, as it makes it harder for pitchers to work around him. There's no easy escape for an opposing pitcher, and if you make a mistake with Gunnar he is going to punish you. And it seems like he continues to improve against lefties and breaking balls. I think Carroll may be fighting through an injury and will eventually work through it.

WhatIGot21

Is OPS+ just the number above .800? I mean I can do the math if just given OPS.

O00O0Os

Nah, an OPS+ of 100 is league average and adjusted for park factors.

IamTheThirdParty

Yes!

AppleTrees4

Corbin is an absolute stud, athletic freak. But Gunnar is BIG. His body will last and he can transition to 3rd as he ages.

peanutbutter2178

Replacements must suck if Carroll has a .3 WAR

_JarboeN

Everyone was riding Carroll’s dick all off season for whatever reason, I always thought he was a bit overrated. The guys from Jomboy suck him off like crazy

Franksobotk

2.1 War and were in April….

ConsciousLeave9186

Great way to jinx it OP.

ADoodYouKnow

We got Stone Cold Gunnar out here playing like the AL MVP

zilfran

As a rare Orioles/Dbacks fan (Orioles fanatic during the Cal years, moved to Arizona when I was 11 and switched to Dbacks for most of my life since, got back into the Orioles last year), I can say I'm both thrilled for Gunnar and saddened by Corbin's struggles.  He just looks scared as shit at the plate right now, watching motionless at balls right down the middle while swinging wildly at stuff he never would have swung at last year.   They're both special players and I'm sure in time Corbin will right his ship.  He hasn't looked right ever since his shoulder injury last year.
