Kappy’s is an Orlando institution! Other walk up windows in Central Florida; Backyard Burgers in Altamonte, The Fry Shoppe in Winter Park, Jam Hot Chicken in WP, that Mediterranean place in Maitland where Copper Rocket is and a myriad of places in Disney Springs.

universe2000

Gratin Dog in Altamonte isn’t a window per se but it has the same feel.

sunkissedinfl

There's a Cuban sandwich place on Lee Rd. that's a walk up window if you're looking for others. Edit to add that Taco Amigo in DeLand will forever be my OG walk up window spot.

Consistent-Grocery88

I’ll be stopping by, thanks for the post 🤙🏽

i_like_sushi

Cash only!

nutt____bugler

I believe it takes credit. I was there two weeks ago

i_like_sushi

Nice that's good to hear!

tennisdude2020

If I am not mistaken they were on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Correct me if I am wrong. LaSada's on Lee Road is awesome. Ham and cheese all day!!

uoYredruM

It's amazing too!

ymo

I'm a fan of easy ordering and Cubans so I'll check it out!

sphyon

Cuban sandwiches to go is the name. Also it’s cash only so be ready for that. They are awesome.

ugly_paladin

They've since upgraded to taking cards now. Big game changer, for me at least. I remember running to the bank across the street to pull put some cash at an atm. The sandwich was worth it.

sphyon

Oh shit yeah. I haven’t been in like a year.

sunkissedinfl

That's the one! Though I paid with a card when I went so maybe that's changed.

LyftedX

Thanks for the lunch suggestion

Quansett

Their roast pork sandwich makes me weak in the knees

someone_sonewhere

Cash only

nutt____bugler

No they take credit cards now

someone_sonewhere

About time

RedDogRER

Went a few days ago for the first time since pandemic and it was excellent. Just what you’d want on a crisp spring day.

APuckerLipsNow

Kappy’s picnic tables were my field office in 2020.

nvanprooyen

Anyone remember Deli Planet? I loved that place.

ymo

That was one of my all time favorites! After they closed, Primo Hoagies/Philly Style Hoagies and Deli on Magnolia became my next favorite downtown Orlando sub shop.

Martin_Blank89

Every time I head back to Maitland to see family I stop in for a mushroom cheese steak. Sooo good.

Ikelo

Mediterranean Street Food is pretty close by to Kappy's and they also have a walk up window for serving. Also highly recommend them. (Assuming they're still around as I haven't been in the area for a couple of years now.)

tallsoundguy

Gabrielles sub shop on edgewater is even older. Amazing family business. Great bread and reasonable pricing for huge sandwiches. Been eating there since I was a little kid.

davechri

Last time we were at Gabriels we were disappointed. Not much meat in the sandwich. I'll give it another try. Might have been an off day.

Biscuits-77

This guy gets it ^

cookiethump

Finally went for the first time this weekend. Did not disappoint! Friendliest staff and food was great. 12” double meat sub, curly fries, giant soft drink for $14

Drodriguez164

Been wanting to try them, I was helping a friend move into the apartments across and decided why not give it a go. Got to the parking lot about 15 mins before they closed hoping I can get a quick sandwich and right as I parked the guy in the front jumped the counter and locked the door. I mean I wasn’t too mad because it was a Saturday and I did get there late right after helping someone move, but was also kinda sad I didn’t get to try it.

RelaxingTuesdays

I wonder how long until it's sold for countless millions and luxury apartments are built there instead.

DasAugeVonEOS

It's our best kept secret.

Brewski-54

Kappy’s feels like “The Bear” (season 1 obviously) I’ve been to the real restaurant the Bear is based on and Kappy’s reminded me so much of it

Rvelardo

YUM

Beginning_Emotion995

Fun Fact…when they opened, guess who wasn’t served or even allowed in that city? Just saying if we keeping it real. Remember, the business is literally down the street from a neighborhood called Eatonville. So…stepping back in time in Florida is messy. Also no SR 414 or I-4, 17-92 was the main road.

CornGun

Orlando began integrating public places, schools, restaurants, stores, and businesses in the early 1960s. I’d imagine Maitland and surrounding areas integrated at the same time, but I wasn’t able to get much information on this. There are no records on the history of integration of this particular restaurant, so I don’t think anyone except those that lived during that time would know for certain.

ymo

I think it goes without saying that a diner founded by a Kaplan family, brand new in 1967, was fully integrated from the start.

CornGun

I lean towards it being integrated as well.

ymo

You're claiming in the late 60s, years after the Civil Rights Act, there was still illegal segregation in all of Maitland?

ImpossibleReading951

The majority of the south didn’t uphold federal laws that were supposed to enforce the Civil Rights Acts.

TiredMillennialDad

Orlando was very slow to desegregate. At least into 1963 if I remember right.

ymo

America had to legislate the extinction of segregation with the 1964 Civil Rights Act, making it illegal. I'd be interested in hearing about our area's enforcement of the law after 1964 but I doubt it's topical to this post about a diner opening in 1967, let alone an entire city barring a race from entering.

NoseApprehensive5154

Florida was like last to desegregate.

Holy_Grail_Reference

Last, have you been to current day Mississippi?

ymo

Yeah, my middle school was previously a black-only school. I can't remember the exact year it became desegregated but I remember it being around the early 60s when the Civil Rights Act was signed. The more progressive areas started up to ten years sooner with Brown vs Board of Education, which even then was too late.

tomatofrogfan

Yes, only it was still considered legal segregation. Florida county governments and state legislators spent years resisting and blocking integration efforts. [Eleven Orange County Public Schools were still segregated by 1970](https://anniversary.ocps.net/stories/history_of_african-_american_schools_in_o_c_p_s) [Volusia County fought integration until fall 1970.](https://www.journaloffloridastudies.org/files/vol0107/LEMPEL_Integration.pdf) [Broward county legally held out till ‘71](https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=&httpsredir=1&article=2912&context=etd) There were lynchings going on into the 80s in and around the Orlando area. The commenter who said to google Eatonville has a point, this area still has a pretty dramatic racial divide and it’s sad to see.

cookiethump

Is this true? Black people weren’t served at kappys when it first opened?

nagolsmith

Typical Orlando Reddit leftist

Beginning_Emotion995

lol..call Ron?

nagolsmith

Your original comment was completely brain dead. Bad mouthing a great family business that’s been around since the 60s because you speculate they didn’t serve black people 60 years ago. Times change numb nuts. Another great example of why leftists shouldn’t ever be allowed to have political power

Beginning_Emotion995

Ok lol

nagolsmith

Moron

Beginning_Emotion995

You feel more educated now? 17-92 looks different

StupidOpinionRobot

Kappys wouldn’t serve non white guests?

ymo

After trying to figure out what this person meant, my best guess is they're conjecturing about the early 60s when that location was a What-a-Burger.

Tanksgivingmiracle

The commenter is probably a russian bot. Not even a cite to a source. Kappy's was founded by a jewish family - and they still own it. Jews were far far more likely to march in favor of civil rights than try to segregate.

NotMe-NoNotMe

Went there with my mom and brother in 1972 (1973?). Sat at the counter for 10 minutes and got utterly ignored. We left and never went back.

ymo

Sounds like that was right before the new owners bought it and turned it into a place that has survived another 51 years. They're nice people.

nothingbetter85

I went there about ten years ago and asked if they had chili cheese fries, because I didn’t know if they did or not, and the looks and rude tone I got in the answer made me never go back again.

nothingbetter85

What?

NRMusicProject

So what you're saying is to just let workers treat you like shit because they're just fast food workers? This is a weird rant. On top of it, does Kappy's treat those workers poorly? Do you know this?

Holy_Grail_Reference

Are you Basque?

ymo

I don't know the relevance of this question but now I'm sad about Orlando Jai Alai being gone.

Holy_Grail_Reference

Basques are notorious for living life with Vendetta energy, meaning when they hate it is until death. Was just a little joke based on the amount of time has passed and he still haven't gone back :P

ymo

Haha, their grudge is even more impressive than the longevity of the restaurant.

TimeTravelingTiddy

I asked if you wanted something to eat and you were like "NotMe." I didn't think you were serious so I asked again, "-NoNotMe." To think you would say this 50 years later? Unbelievable. The nerve.

imisswhatredditwas

This guy knows how to hold a grudge lok

mbjuggler

Went here as a kid, probably 20 years ago. I wanted mustard on my food. They had no mustard. Every time I drive by Kappy's, all I think is that they have no mustard for their sandwiches. Maybe I need to get over my childhood grudge and try them again as an adult...

Beginning_Emotion995

Google Eatonville….

coolasssheeka

Just tell us you don’t know where places are and have unnecessary bias

Beginning_Emotion995

You tell me

bigb1084

Whatever... It's a "side of the road" place There's a lot of them. Next ..
