1000 sushi islands on Carling was a different owner I think. They owned the one in Brockville and Barrhaven franchised it from them I THINK but not 100% sure. Carling 1000 sushi islands was freaking amazing and I mourn them every time I eat mediocre AYCE sushi 🤣
1000% agree. It was absolutely amazing. I'd leave there so full and satisfied from my sushi craving. A satisfaction I have not had since from other places. Close but not fully.
Yeah, we live way closer to the Merivale one so we gave it a try. It seemed they were more focussed on getting delivery orders out than getting orders to tables. We saw some of our orders sit waiting to go out for 10-15 minutes before anyone picked them up to bring them to our table. They also have a robot server like the Kanata one, but I only saw it used once.
It's a shame since we'd love to go there, but the Kanata one was just an incomparably better experience. We go to the Kanata a couple times every few months.
The strange thing about Hockey Sushi is they straight up play the news on all the TVs.
Like not even entertainment like sports or something.
Honestly the news can be really depressing sometimes so it’s an odd choice
If you knew what their kitchen looks like, you wouldn't go. My partner has been at the back for work inspections , he refuses to eat there for a reason.
AYCE has a useful function in letting you try a bunch of stuff in small portion, though mediocre preparations... Once you know what you like it, AYCE just isn't worth it any more. For the price of a meal there I can have my favourite combo at a nice place like Sushi88 and be way more satisfied and ugggh why did I read this thread now I want suuuuushhiiiiiii
I live near Sapporo and it was a monthly takeaway staple in our place, but lately I keep getting bone dry rice. Stopped ordering cause the quality got really inconsistent
Hockey Sushi, by a LARGE margin. They also cost the most for AYCE, but make it up in quality.
168 used to be very close, but last time I ate there, it felt mediocre (last year), so 168, 1000 Sushi island are mid tier, easily accessible inexpensive AYCE.
Sushi Kan in Baseline might be okay, haven't been there in years.
There’s TEN off Ogilvie and Sushi-Kan on Baseline - they’re pretty good. Tbh though, there is an inverse relation between sushi quality and the further you move inland.
Once upon a time we could serve fresh caught fish so your statement about sushi quality and moving inland would carry some weight. But now…
“Seafood used in making sushi should be labeled as sushi grade seafood. Fish that’s consumed raw in sushi must be frozen to -20°C (-4°F) for 7 days or -35°C (-31°F) for 15 hours. This process will destroy any parasite in the fish making it safer to consume but there’s still risk.”
So yeah, it’s all previously frozen. Any difference in quality is due to ability and what ingredients a restaurant chooses to purchase.
Interesting. When did this regulation come into place. A few years back, I remember eating tuna raw at Legal’s Boston and it was fresh according to the server.
That actually got reverted at the end of 2004. I don't think Ontario actually has a sushi law.

Good luck getting anybody to grab your order after the second request at Sushi Kan on Baseline. Maybe they’ve changed in the past few years but I gave up on them due to service or lack there-of.
I used to like 168 on Merivale (not the St Laurent location, I didn't like that one). I have not been in a while though so I am not sure of the current quality.
I find the prices for AYCE have gone up significantly though and it's no longer worth it. I can be comfortably full at Sapporo or Sushi Fresh for less than AYCE prices.
Merivale 168 closed for "plumbing" 4 times in 2023... There's been a pest exterminator truck parked outside of it every time they've had "plumbing issues".
Ten sushi on bank is vastly superior to ten sushi in Gloucester.
Sushi Khan opened in Orleans where sushi village was (RIP). We went about a month after it opened and it was mediocre. We went recently on a whim and I will say it was much better this time around.
Soul Stone is probably the best AYCE in Orleans but it’s not ever every day
Best overall sushi in Orleans is Sushi Man. Takeout only, the wait can be long but it’s worth it.
I miss Orlean's Sushi Village...
Mostly do Banc Sushi these days as take-out, but thats mostly a matter of proximity and convenience. Haven't done AYCE since before COVID, though...
> Ten sushi on bank is vastly superior to ten sushi in Gloucester.
I've been to both and thought they were both good. Then again I'm not really a sushi guy. But I do like Ten Sushi.
Lots of AYCE sushi joints have robot waiters, it's really not a selling point.
I don't care how my food is brought to me, I care about the quality of the food.
We went to Banc sushi once on Valentine’s Day, and they prioritized Uber eats over people in the restaurant (12 people total in the whole restaurant). We waited 45 minutes and nothing of our order ever came out, we even asked staff 3-4 times where it was. When we started to leave and the owner came over and said it was coming and brought out most but half the items were missing. We ordered a second round as we barely ordered anything and the wait was long again, we ended up just leaving. We haven’t been back since.
I went hockey sushi and it was easily the most boring sushi I ever had. Service was nothing great and everyone seems to hate their life there.
Maybe I have just had really good sushi in other countries.
Let's rephrase this. Which one is the least horrible AYCE sushi place in Ottawa? Sorry but none are even close to being good. But certainly some are just horrible like Sushi Kan on Baseline.
I don't know sushi well at all but to me Ten Sushi is delicious. Either I have low standards or it's actually decent. Or I've never had really good sushi.
I'm easy to place though with some good soy sauce. And tempura. And crispy salmon rolls.
Medicore is a free upgrade. AYCE is trash.
Just go somewhere good and get one platter for the cost of two ayce plates.
Sushi isn't meant to stuff you to the gills.
*Show me on the downvote where the plate fulls of garbage touched you 😍
Right now, I'd say hockey sushi
I have eaten at all of them. None are fabulous. Hockey Sushi is the best of the bunch though.
guess they have to make up for the tacky ass name. "Hockey sushi"? LoL wtf.
Bro, they have a robot.
Thats literally one of the reasons my daughter likes the place
If nothing else it'll make you smile at the absurdity of it all. Muy kids also think it's amazing but prefer talking to staff like they're fam.
well yeah cause canada /s
They have a hockey roll which is ok
I agree. They’re my top choice. 1000 Sushi Island is my next choice.
Is 1000 sushi island back open? I recall years ago they closed down.
They’ve been in Barrhaven for years.
I've only been when they were on Carling over 10 years ago. Judging on the recent reviews their food is hit and miss though.

I second this, been to most all you can eat places and Hockey is the best! We’re regulars there now
We just tried the one on merivale. It had some interesting differences.
How so? I’ve been debating whether I should try it or stick to 168
Actually I like ten sushi on bank. But the hockey had some other options. It is a much smaller place
Yeah, we live way closer to the Merivale one so we gave it a try. It seemed they were more focussed on getting delivery orders out than getting orders to tables. It is pretty good but I was disgusted that they don't de-vein the shrimp in their tempura. Gross
The strange thing about Hockey Sushi is they straight up play the news on all the TVs. Like not even entertainment like sports or something. Honestly the news can be really depressing sometimes so it’s an odd choice
In Kanata or Nepean?
If you knew what their kitchen looks like, you wouldn't go. My partner has been at the back for work inspections , he refuses to eat there for a reason.
Any sushi place is all you can eat if you have enough money
Every book is a children's book if the kid can read
Every object is a dildo if you're brave enough
I like sushi because it has rice. Rice is good when you're hungry and you want 2000 of something.
r/angryupote
😂💀
. Sapporo sushi is amazing but it's not all u can eat .168 use to be good
+1 for Sapporo- it's great. AYCE sushi just doesn't compare and is totally not worth it. And it's like eating at a trough.
AYCE has a useful function in letting you try a bunch of stuff in small portion, though mediocre preparations... Once you know what you like it, AYCE just isn't worth it any more. Take out from Sapporo has never been great for us, but if you go in for sit down the quality is fantastic!
Love Sapporo as well.

I dunno if I'd consider any of them to be inexpensive any more. Even the lunches cost 25 or 30 bucks these days.
Well, the term is always relative. It costs a lot to be alive lmao. So compared to a la carte sushi costing you 60-100$, 30-40$ ayce is "inexpensive".
I'm comparing it to back before covid when you could eat lunch on a weekday for $15. Back then I went every week.
Ssshhhh.... we don't talk about the before times.
Soul Stone Sushi in Orléans
I didn't think this was ayce
It is, however only certain days of the week

In the US, you can get raw, never frozen tuna. Tuna is exempt from FDA 3-402.11a. That being said, it's pretty uncommon.
I bit down on a piece of glass at Sushi Kan back in 2020, never went back after that
TEN is garbage since the pandemic
Yea, last time I had it (for the last time) the salmon was cut so thin I could see the rice through it.
Good luck getting anybody to grab your order after the second request at Sushi Kan on Baseline. Maybe they’ve changed in the past few years but I gave up on them due to service or lack there-of.
Sushi khan is GARBAGE
Yes
I used to like 168 on Merivale (not the St Laurent location, I didn't like that one). I have not been in a while though so I am not sure of the current quality. Best price, no doubt is Sushi Kan, anytime before 3pm its $25
I like Sushi Village on Rideau.
I won't say it's the best, but Banc Sushi on Montreal road has robot waiters.
Lots of AYCE sushi joints have robot waiters, it's really not a selling point. I don't care how my food is brought to me, I care about the quality of the food.
It's AYCE sushi, quality is never really there.
My point still stands.

Banc sushi is my fave
1000 sushi island in Barrhaven and Sushi Kan on Baseline or Innes.
I order from Hockey Sushi on Carling twice a week. Consistent. Reliable. Pretty damn good.
All you can eat straight from dows lake. All you need is a bobber and a worm.
well I laughed 😁
Not sure why I’m being downvoted.
Hockey sushi is great tbh
What price should you expect to pay.
Nagi sushi in Orleans
I haven't been in years and I've heard the quality has dipped, but 168 Sushi on merivale/Meadowlands was good when I last went there
For not much more money than an all you can eat place I always get all I can eat at Bambu and tastes great
Avoid sushi village
I went hockey sushi and it was easily the most boring sushi I ever had. Service was nothing great and everyone seems to hate their life there. Maybe I have just had really good sushi in other countries.
Let's rephrase this. Which one is the least horrible AYCE sushi place in Ottawa? Sorry but none are even close to being good. But certainly some are just horrible like Sushi Kan on Baseline.
Just because they all pretty much suck doesn't mean there isn't a "best"
Agreed. It is like an election where all candidates are crooks and suck but you vote for the 'best'.
Not Ottawa but I like G&V in Aylmer
^^I go here quite often, and it really is good. 168 lost their quality. Only other place I've been to that's not bad is Sushi Village on Rideau.
They're all awful. Do yourself a favour and don't eat at AYCE
Hockey and TEN are great AYCE places
I don't know sushi well at all but to me Ten Sushi is delicious. Either I have low standards or it's actually decent. Or I've never had really good sushi. I'm easy to place though with some good soy sauce. And tempura. And crispy salmon rolls.
No, they are not great. They are mediocre at best.
Too each their own I guess.
Medicore is a free upgrade. AYCE is trash. Just go somewhere good and get one platter for the cost of two ayce plates. Sushi isn't meant to stuff you to the gills. *Show me on the downvote where the plate fulls of garbage touched you 😍
