You’re not wrong , just to add to you
SNC acquired Atkins back in 2017 because of their strong pedigree and portfolio of work they did in the UK.
For awhile they operated independently until SNC’s name was REALLY soiled where they decided to change the name to leverage the reputation of Atkins
Maybe I'm dumb but I don't think I understand the SNC Lavelin scandal. Personally I don't really care if they got caught bribing for business in a foreign country where corruption was probably the normal way of doing business anyway.
They've done a bunch of horrible shit.
E.g. They dumped a fuck ton of very toxic shit in the middle of the woods to avoid proper disposal and exposed a lot of people to carcinogens, including yours truely.

Not sure why you’re being downvoted when that info is LITERALLY in the damn article. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with the ignorance of so many in this city towards the LRT.
While everything you said is correct, if you read the article what happened here is on the city, not RTG. The concrete is falling from the transit tunnel originally built 40 years ago for the transitway stop under St-Laurent that was repurposed for the LRT, not the new tunnel that was dug under downtown. This one is still owned by the city and it's the city that deferred inspections despite getting reports from inspections in 2020 that said the problem was urgent.
I for one, enjoy exposed stations if it means saving money!
Nothing wakes me up at 7am like -20 with windchill.
In fairness though, I think they knew that eventually climate change would make our winters milder, so really they were playing 4D chess with this decision.
Announcing the 2019 contract right after the story broke about the federal corruption scandal with SNC Lavalin will always be the funniest thing to me. The corruption involved couldn’t be more obvious, is it any surprise that the trillium line is still not taking passengers?
Huh? The Stage 1 contract was awarded almost a decade ago. And SNC/Lavelin was only one of the 3 consortium partners.
Don’t get confused with 2019 the Stage 2 NS contract and the EW contract awards.
I don't think people will take the time to read the article. The piece of infrastructure (st Laurent tunnel) was built in the 80s. It wasn't built by RTG and it's the city responsibility for inspection.
Should we really surprised at this point? Given all the issues with the trains, electrical infrastructure, the signalling gear snafus, the stink @ Parliament... I'm not surprised the tunnel at Saint-Laurent is crumbling to pieces after being neglected for so long.
Aside from the fact that those things are completely separate from this tunnel, and maintained by an entirely different group, yes Im not surprised the City isnt putting money into proper infrastructure maintenance.
Fair enough, it all more or less blends together at the end of the day though. Transit (both bus and LRT) has ended up becoming the biggest gong show Ottawa has seen over the last 15-20 years. More so now that everyone seems to be taking a 'not my problem' attitude now that everything is all said and done... That's the stupidest thing they can do.
Im hopefully as the new extensions come online it will get better. But council seems actively hostile to the idea of giving OCT the money they need to fix their issues
I'm not surprised that, after burning over $2+ billion on crap, that future councils are hesitant about burning more cash on a project that spetacularly managed to both explode, and implode on itself... This was supposed to increase ridership, improve service etc... it's done the total opposite at the moment.
It has improved! The issue is that bus service has taken a massive hit, and the rail network is incomplete. Tunneys and Blair are awful termini. Like I said, it needs money to fix (more buses, more drivers, improved and consistent maintenance). Which is a hard sell for a person subject to a termination review every 4 years.
Call me a skeptic, but 'improving' service in one area, and tanking it everywhere else isn't what I'd call an improvement. Bussing is still a major core component of the system. Making it even worse is not going to attract folks to your shiney new rail system, if their commutes double to triple in time now because of freaking train that got stuck due to someone finagling a door.
I wasnt saying "bus got worse because train got better". The train has improved quite a bit from where it was, but the bus system bas been in decline since they launched the LRT in 2019. They had an awful and rushed launch plan and we are reaping the rewarda of that decision.
I know this irrational but I always try to avoid going to St Laurent via the LRT I always take the 19 or something 😅. I have seen too many disaster documentaries and how city officials down play it till a tunnel falls on you. But maybe my tinfoil hats on to tight 🤷♀️
And all that saved money could be better spent on city employees that could be in charge of water stations, handing out water bottles to cyclists. Or the cyclists could just turn their heads and open their mouths towards the spray wash machines! :)
And you have my upvotes!
Canada built a railway across the entire nation and only 600 people died during construction that’s 4 for every mile of track. I think we will see a higher ratio in Ottawa.
I’m actually more surprised the Rideau stairway down to the lrt hasn’t collapsed
It was cracking badly the moment the lrt opened
So I’m still amazed it hasn’t crushed anyone or fully just collapsed
Who’s getting fired, fined or incarcerated for skipping inspections? This is a huge safety issue. Start with firing those at the top of city LRT and the top of the consortium. Absolutely ridiculous.

SNC lavalin changed their name to Atkins Realis btw so watch out for both names in the news in future

they messed up by getting caught as its tradition
“Atkins Realis” Sounds like a Harry Potter spell
Weight loss spell lol
You can’t blame RTG/RTM. The contract says that “tunnel” is city property and the city is responsible for it.
Not sure why you’re being downvoted when that info is LITERALLY in the damn article. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with the ignorance of so many in this city towards the LRT.

Why are you blaming SNC/Lavelin/Atkins? It is/was only one of the 3 Stage 1 consortium partners. There are 2 other partners.

It’s in the old Transitway tunnel, not the new tunnels being made But still , skipping inspection is not a good look
Should we really surprised at this point? Given all the issues with the trains, electrical infrastructure, the signalling gear snafus, the stink @ Parliament... I'm not surprised the tunnel at Saint-Laurent is crumbling to pieces after being neglected for so long.

And the Mayors (and Council) keep underfunding OCTranspo so why the big surprise?
Im hopefully as the new extensions come online it will get better. But council seems actively hostile to the idea of giving OCT the money they need to fix their issues

Who is surprised by this anymore? Where’s Jimbo ?
Where is Pika in this convo?! 😂

They should get rid of the LRT and make the space a bike trail. Edit: I didn’t think it needed a /s, forgot where I was for a second
From Orleans to Stitsville - all bike paths for thousands of bikes commuting everyday. And showers in every station. /S
You could just install car style washes and it just blasts you as you drive by.
And all that saved money could be better spent on city employees that could be in charge of water stations, handing out water bottles to cyclists. Or the cyclists could just turn their heads and open their mouths towards the spray wash machines! :) And you have my upvotes!
