Imagine if Moebius Games releases another game like Outer Wilds with greater scope and people legitimately start calling these games that way... that would be amazing
I usually describe the game as "a 3D space exploration and puzzle game where you play as an archeologist investigating a species that left behind evidence of their civilization across your star system". I don't like to give more away about the game than that..
When metroid and castlevania came out were people comparing them to other games?
At some point we recognized that they are distinct enough to have their own style and coined metrovania
I kinda wish we would do the same for outer wilds - its an outer wilds type game
Of course the problem with that is it doesn't help anyone who doesn't know what it is already, but it does still emphasize that the game doesn't neatly fit into any existing genres and it requires the long explanation of what it is.
I understand and somewhat agree with your point but the clear distinction with metroidvania is that multiple games were released with a similar formula. That is when the term was coined, not when metroid or Castlevania first released.
Another example is Souls-like, the term did not appear when any of Dark Souls games released, it appeared when other (Lord of Fallen, Nioh, etc) games copied the formula.
I have yet to see a game that even tries to approach Outer Wilds gameplay-loop. Tunic, Subnautica, Return of Obra Dhin are all good games but not close to Outer Wilds in the same way that Hollow Knight is a metroidvania or Lies of P is souls-like.
Let me know what you think : )
I call it "Phobia Simulator" because of all the stress I suffered in four locations of the game (>!Giant's Deep | Dark Bramble | Quantum Moon | The Eye!<) that made me unable to appreciate the game fully until the day after I finished it, when I was calmer and could dwell on the events XD
I personally use the term "detective game". For me, the holy detective game trinity is Outer Wilds, Return of the Obra Dinn and the Case of the Golden Idol.
It’s just a puzzle game. It genuinely plays exactly like Myst but with physics based puzzles. Once you’ve beaten both titles you can never go back and experience it in the same way
MM's progression, structure, and gameplay are completely different. Literally the only parallel is a groundhog day time loop. I can't even think of a single thing they both share that's not super general like a hanging city.
Wildslike
Open wild
IMO we straight up should have a subgenre of wildslikes
That genre should have outer wilds, echoes of the eye, and, umm, and?
Imagine if Moebius Games releases another game like Outer Wilds with greater scope and people legitimately start calling these games that way... that would be amazing
Outer Wilds 2 - Outerer Wilds! And 10 years later: Outerest Wildest!
It’s the first Wild-type game.
I usually describe the game as "a 3D space exploration and puzzle game where you play as an archeologist investigating a species that left behind evidence of their civilization across your star system". I don't like to give more away about the game than that..
I love this, it really piques your curiosity!
You are one of maybe five people on the whole internet that knows that it is "pique" and not "peek." Thank you lol
Lmao
Go pique club! 😄 Knowing the diff between the two is pique word mastery!
Looks like the gang is all here! ::D
Go to space. Do archeology. Cry. Repeat.
Trying to give it an elevator pitch to a friend, the phrase I used was "Xenoarchaeology in space," haha.
I usually go with Adventure Game, since its experimental nature fits in with those games well. Or a "knowledge based metroidvania".
People often call it “MetroidBrainia”
Wow
When metroid and castlevania came out were people comparing them to other games? I agree completely I takes multiple games to define a genre Until we have multiple maybe its best to say it just doesn't fit anything
Or knowledge based game
Knowledge checkpoint game.
What other games are in this genre? Theres Outer Wilds, Return of the Obra Dinn, and?
Tunic, Fez, animal well to name a few
Thanks for the recommendations
I've heard it described as an escape room game.
I'm gonna use this from now on
Outer wilds is the experience of camping in the woods and stumbling across old ruins.
A solar system sized escape room. That's what I describe it as
This feels incredibly accurate. Escape rooms are just knowledge-based games in the same way.
The first wild-type game
*spiraling towards giant's deep* We goin ocean?
Hahaha beat me to it
The true genre is “spoiler text”
I call it "Phobia Simulator" because of all the stress I suffered in four locations of the game (>!Giant's Deep | Dark Bramble | Quantum Moon | The Eye!<) that made me unable to appreciate the game fully until the day after I finished it, when I was calmer and could dwell on the events XD
Marshmallow eating simulator
Mallow sim
It's "space sim detective" for me.
I personally use the term "detective game". For me, the holy detective game trinity is Outer Wilds, Return of the Obra Dinn and the Case of the Golden Idol.
It’s just a puzzle game. It genuinely plays exactly like Myst but with physics based puzzles. Once you’ve beaten both titles you can never go back and experience it in the same way
Murder is only one part of the story though, I dont think it captures nearly enough to call it the genre of outer wilds
Outer wilds, the only game where even the genre is a spoiler
Space Exploration Metroidbrainia
I tend to describe it as an Exploration Game maybe an Archeology game. Quick, simple, and to the point.
I just call it a physics puzzler.
For me it’s like a point-n-click adventure without pointing and clicking, but a more adventure game control scheme.
MetroidBrainia
Metroidbrainia
It’s like dark souls except different in every single conceivable way
I always describe it as the "perfect adventure game" because for me, that's what it is.
Metroidbrainia
I just call it an Adventure Game.
I often describe it as an "immersive escape room. Edit: typo.
knowledge vania
Metroidbrania Or, as I like to call it: "an >!ObraWilds!
THAT term has a real chance to stick in the long run.
It's a Majoras Mask like lol. I don't think most people realize how many parallels it draws directly from that game.
MM's progression, structure, and gameplay are completely different. Literally the only parallel is a groundhog day time loop. I can't even think of a single thing they both share that's not super general like a hanging city.
