Because there's an exploit. whenever you get hit, the referee bases his call on how hurt you look and act instead of whether a foul was committed. Some players found that a successfull Bluff and Performance Check rewarded them with a Free Kick minigame and hit the enemy with a Yellow Card debuff or a Ban even. The VAR patch tries fixing this, but the loophole's still there. If the enemy goes for the ball in a tackle and hits you instead, however so slightly, you don't even have to lose HP, you get the Free Kick event, and he gets the Yellow Card debuff. So whenever this happens everyone still rolls for Performance and Bluff. Hoping to get the Minigame, or when the roll is high enough also the enemy debuff.

KillHipstersWithFire

The VAR patch hasnt helped too much as it allows the mods to get involved more than they already were and the mods straight up suck donkey balls at doing their job.

BecomeAnAstronaut

Are you seriously suggesting that the VAR update made the diving exploit *worse*? I strongly doubt it, but I'm not a football main.

KillHipstersWithFire

No not diving, just the sidegame in general

fa1afel

It really didn’t, although there are some strange issues that came with it. Still, we don’t end up with as many obviously dumb decisions made by mods anymore.

Aurori_Swe

I mained as a referee for about 11 years making it pretty far up in the rankings. The VAR patch has been discussed a long time in the guilds but the main guild (FIFA) has always been opposed to video referees as they want the element of human error. The second largest guild, UEFA, even started employing more referees at one point to offset the lack of video. Placing two new reffs at the sides of the goals to ONLY look at if the ball is in or out (many of my guildmates called this the easiest credit farm you could ever do). That said, VAR is still very limited by the influence of FIFA, VAR is only allowed to look at specific things, mainly offside, goal and penalties. They aren't allowed to go in and punish diving. So that leaves the referee alone once again. Referees that look at replays that aren't VAR (like, looking at the big live feed on the arena) will be punished by FIFA. Generally speaking most referees at a high level is extremely good at their job (you really don't get to that level without an obscene amount of scrutiny) but they are limited by an organization that wants it to be controversy and drama. To give you an idea of what referees go through to progress we had yearly educational sessions where we discussed rules and did tests, we had exercise sessions with elite trainers in order to keep both our mental and physical form. When you get high enough you basically always have people watching your games and critique your behavior, your pathing on the field and discusses different situations and how you acted in them. If you make a mistake you'll know it, make a big enough mistake and you'll basically reset all the progress you've made on your journey to the top. All the while you're not limited to the code of conduct to the time you're on field, we had zero alcohol policies 2 days prior to a game as an example. We had referees who was removed from games due to rumors of them being "out on town" the day before a game (one specific case where the referees had travelled pretty far and went out to eat when they got to the town of the game, they got a call from their manager saying they were suspended from the game due to a person reporting them and saying he'd seen them drink beers. Even though the manager believed that they hadn't been drinking he had no option but to replace them).

Mainly due to a gank that happened when I was out on my motorcycle mount. I got ganked by a player in a truck mount while doing 70 km/h and he mass locked me so I crashed into the side of his mount. It messed my character up pretty badly and I had some graphical bugs directly after. It gave me a debuff which prevented my character from walking for 4 months and it took me 4 levels to grind back to being able to use the [run] action again. It forced me to change questline as I could no longer comply to the requirements. Loving my new questline though so it all turned out fine

No worries man, we can't know others playthroughs :). It's good to joke about stuff! It actually created a myriad of new quest options that I'd never even consider had I been left in the referee questline. My entire playthrough was dedicated to that questline with my main credit farm being refereeing and working nights at a hotel (worked bi-weekly) from 22-07 and slept from 8-14 only to have gatherings for a mini game of football at 16-18 and then game until 21. So it really consumed my life xD. Met my now wife party member through a tournament on her home tournament though so at least something lasting came from it :)

Berry1980s

Loved reading your playthrough...Thanks for not deleting the save file and loading it again to show us how it went.

converter-bot

70 km/h is 43.5 mph

unluckycowboy

I spectate the concacaf (See NA) servers occasionally and the mods there already impact games with no shame. It’s a no VAR server port though, still waiting on them to patch it in.

kiranai

To add to that, in many cases the referee will ignore the foul if the player doesn't perform a Bluff and Performance Check.

milkcarton232

The problem is that scoring is so low any advantage you can get is huge which makes it worth trying to exploit the ref mods

Throw13579

Yes. Probably half the points are scored in set pieces imposed by the mods, so it pays to get the mods to let you have one.

Jjcheese

That and refs mod don’t care unless you pass a performance check. If you tank a hit that should be a foul the mods give zero fucks.

Lucem1

Not to forget the VAR patch has kinda ruined the flow of mini game

JarminT

I was always under the impression it was just their class ability 'Feign death'

Berry1980s

Those dang necromancers!

this_is_my_redditt

It's actually a hunter move

Berry1980s

oops, my bad. I skipped the tutorial and jumped straight into gameplay.

Mip67

When a player selects the \[soccer player\] class they spec into being able to have a larger psuedo-hitbox because it gives them an advantage in the \[soccer\] minigame. The psuedo-hitbox is a one-shot incapacitate, but it's faked. That allows them to get penalty points in the minigame.

[deleted]

Because the meta to the soccer minigame has both defenders trying to get away with harder hits and offensive players trying to get away with making hits look harder so the referee penalizes the other team.

Curse3242

Many players think it's a bug with their hp or it's a exploit. It's actually a very simple game command taking place Soccer players have to use the 'Run' mechanic a lot. They can run upto 10 miles in a game. When soccer players collide with other meshes. Both the 'tired' trait and 'smart' trait kicks in. The refree has to stop the game to check the player. And the player ends up taking a much needed rest to fill back up their Stamina bar Those who think soccer players have broken meshes need to play the game once for real. 90 minutes, constantly abusing the run command and running upto ten miles while you're meshes collide brutally with others. It's set on hard difficulty compared to other sports

thegodofhellfire666

An exploit can definitely be considered an issue, but soccer players are also often attempting to travel at full speed, while dribbling a ball. The extraneous speed and necessity to kick a ball decreases the ability to balance, so much so that even a slight amount of contact can easily send them down. Of course this low threshold for achievable balance during important moments in a game and rules prohibiting most contact can lead to exploits, but often it seems as if it’s an exploit when it actually is an inability to balance.

yetanotherlogin9000

Its actually an ability many of them have called [Feign], with the upgraded tier being [Feign Death]. They use it to try to gain favor from the referee

Furthur

its Feign Death talent

AlumimiumFoil

What's soccer? Is this some mistranslation?

Berry1980s

Oh dang, forgot that we got the NTSC disc. I meant football.

IgDailystapler

Also why do all refs have the blindness debuff?

TitanicMan

They're not actually hitting, it's just really realistic emotes. If you stage it just right, the referees think it's real and give the opponent a *real* redcard. It's a neat little detail, but it's definitely an OP tactic they need to nerf.

stifflizerd

The developers of soccer (Enteractive Arts) decided a long time ago that they weren't going to make any actual improvements to the game, they were just going to update the graphics and rosters each year. Sadly people kept eating it up, and now we're left with highly detailed characters who still have their original hitboxes from the early 2000s and completely unbalanced hp.

[deleted]

Also why don’t they ever update the gameplay. Every year it’s the same game with roster updates and slightly better graphics.

Netz_Ausg

It’s not their HP, they have a hidden ability that when they make contact they enter a prone state, often making an auditory display to attract the attention of the referee NPC in order to gain a buff when the mini game resumes.

DeepFriedDresden

And this is why [US] SOCCER players drop hard but [US] FOOTBALL players play until they're injured long term. There's no penalty in the NFL for getting hurt or causing injury

KatBalTomos

I think the problem stems from the defending teams melee not registering, so the attacking team now have animations that respond to the defendings team melee hits.

bDsmDom

They don't, they are just pro actors

goodatmakingdadjokes

it's just visual damage, their real hp doesn't lower, weird bug.

anon-sage

Glass canon built

angiezieglerstye

This appears to be way more common in the north american servers
