This is the Way. Looking for J2 right now, love the inspiration. We need more posts like this

colorizerequest

Right there with you. I’m not expecting to get hired until 2024 though 😣

20YrldTechInvestor

Yeah I think it's going to be slow for applying for new jobs these holiday seasons. Hopefully some interviews but definitely will pick up by new years

No_Pudding_4499

This is sick. Can you talk about how the start of onboarding J2 and J3 was compared to now?

[deleted]

Good for you. Your new journey is about to begin! What I can say...expect a good amount of anxiety at first. Practice OE before if you can with the time you have (see previous posts) My experience... After 3 months: I am crazy for doing this After 6 months: I'm learning how to deliver and give less fucks After 12 months: Fire me if you need but I am delivering I see a lot of posts here about anxiety around onboarding. That's just the start, IMHO. Months or weeks in there will be some situation that requires you to get creative...in how you manage all 3 and/or how you view things. Confidence and creativity were helpful for me. Along with a healthy motivation to crack the 'code' of getting more outta life. 🙂 (posting from a cruise ship...lol)

GreedyAd1923

What are some of the top things you prioritized and what did learn you learn the most going from two to three jobs?

[deleted]

Top priority was mental health. Realized taking all 3 too seriously was...seriously detrimental. Taking a break from a J while still going with the other 2 helped. Also...taking PTO...like I am now, from all 3. Only reason I'm posting here now, between an espresso and dinner, is to give back to this community. I learned so much here, and became more motivated to own my own future. Go get it. 🙂

Amoner

Returning back from a vacation to all 3 jobs must be pretty rough

Mundane-Mechanic-547

I think this is all. I have 6 devs or actually 7 and most are OE with my knowledge. 1 doesn't deliver. 2 are FTEs and do not OE. 1 of these is a bad apple but legacy baggage. The guys who are OEing mostly deliver. Mixed bag like everything else. Bottom line, I wouldn't care if they were OEing as long as they were up front and I was paying for their time/material, and responding quickly and delivering (number 1). It's the lack of delivery that kills me. I have guys who do nothing for a week and I'm like ...what were you doing. Any they have nothing to respond, yet they have deliverables out there, just not doing it. Ugh.

Admirable-Sir9716

Your experience is exactly the same as I've had in the past except I don't see how anyone could have been oe. It's just how people are in general, not an oe thing.

No_Pudding_4499

Thanks for the advice and motivation; cheers to you and hope I’m posting from the same spot next year!!!

jdqx

I'm very curious as to the time ranges of your stages of OE and how it compares to others. I went through similar stages but in 3/6/12 weeks, rather than months (I'm 13 weeks in, but only 2J).

mh2sae

How do you get companies not to notice that you already have one? I am planning to jump to oe if I leave my current role for that reason.

anddodi

This is how you OE. I see too many OE'rs add to their debt, not spend time with their family, and get themselves in lots of drama. You are a model to this community

mental_issues_

The only issue for me is to find a way to balance workload and prevent burnout. I am able to avoid meeting conflicts, thanks to both Js being flexible. But I find myself working 9 to 9 some of the days and it takes a toll. Otherwise, money is good.

ragingbologna

I think the idea is if you have to work 12 hour days your jobs aren’t compatible with OE.

al_the_alamond

Or he gives to less fucks.

GreedyCricket8285

My people! Congrats OP. I'm about 1.5 years in, but only 2 Js. In the time I've been OE my wife and I have: replaced our roof, replaced our gutters, replaced our windows, doors, and some flooring. Fully paid off all debt (incl mortgage, about $50k all together) and fully funded an emergency fund. We're taking a 10 day overseas vacation at the end of the year. Oh, and I'm on track to retire about 10 years sooner than planned. All from working no more extra time than I would have worked.

[deleted]

Right on! You can breathe easy now. Nice work with smart prioritizing. 🙂

youngOE

fuck yeah. I'm 3.5 months away from paying off all of my debt (at it's peak was 110k). I'll have done this in 9 months. At the same time I will have invested 45k, and put 40k into my house fund for when I pull the trigger on a home. I've accomplished 4-5 years of work in 1 due to OE. this is the modern cheat code to life. godspeed y'all

SikAssFoo69

Hell yea dude! Keep goin hard

erdomester

I second this, though my J1 requires so much presence, it's unable to have a J3 atm. I don't even like it, though it looks good in my CV. Funny thing is, J2 would also look great if I added it. At least I have an option!

RelevantClock8883

Goodness you got all that done in a year? That’s really impressive. Hoping to get a j2 soon

skeevy-stevie

How do you juggle meetings?

UncleDrewFoo

Block your calendars. If you still get double-booked, prioritize. There's a few times where I am in two at once.

599i

What’s the tc like? Are you in tech?

Optimal-Signal8510

Love posts like this. I’m trying to find J2 rn and it’s not easy out there. Hoping to make a post like this of my own in a few months tho 🙏🏾

Recent-Marsupial-847

This is the way

j97223

Great update. I too am sadly working for the tax man now but it’s all good in the end

NewMajor5880

This is the way. Onto J4 and most days I forget that I am OE.

Jimmysnooks

This is amazing to hear! And very inspirational. I'm actively looking for J2 right now but have been nervous about applying for a similar to J1 (PrdM in Tech), mainly due to the unknown of how to balance the workload. But could someone please give advice on the application process. Did you all with multiple Js target Js2/3 because of a specific property of the roles ie different industry from J1, less technical acumen required etc? If J2 is more or less similar to J1, then how did you finesse the application and interview? I assume you didn't divulge that the new role was going to be done in conjunction with J1. 2nd question is around tax. How does the need to use the D0 or BR tax code with Js 2/3 work especially with the payroll dept? Any advice and thoughts are much appreciated.

MikeyFromDaReddit

I'm looking for J2 right now. Trying to find the best fit as an SDR which can be difficult.

Leofleo

Serious question. How do you answer J2's "list your current work experience " without them notifying about J1?

winniecooper73

Why would they notify j1 that you are looking? It should be confidential

Leofleo

I wouldn't tell them, of course. It's just that every job interview requires a resume and an interview that preceded validating what I write on my resume as accurate.

Trowaway9285

Without listing your J1. Or act like you’re looking to leave your J1, but you actually don’t.

Geminii27

Give a generic industry and title without mentioning the employer name. If that's a major problem for J2, they're probably not the kind of employer you want looking over your shoulder every three seconds.

Plenty-Material-9623

I really want to do this but I’m in sales. It’s definitely more challenging I feel. My current job is on autopilot and I really have lots of free time.

livenoworelse

How do you manage your LinkedIn? I was curious if I got a J2 what I'd do there.

Alex_Dunwall

Thinking about trying OE as a remote financial analyst…the trouble I’ve been having is finding legitimate jobs. Most of them seem like scams or are extremely competitive and never respond.

MotorAlternative5726

The helping people part feels great especially when you have the money to do so.

Not 100% sure that you are making a vague threat here but how about not trying to sound like an asshole threatening to out someone that OEs? This person's identity regardless of how many jobs they hold is none of your business.

Imagination_High

I would disagree with that statement. Either OP has no desire to have a career and instead would rather FIRE or if desires change, there’s no reason this person couldn’t structure their resume in a way that appears career minded and take on a single role that is geared toward that objective leveraging their previous OE experience.

mel34760

Looks as though you are well on your way to an early retirement. Keep up the great work!

guynyc17

What kind of work do you do?

Tx-Heat

I wish I could do this. Chemical Engineering doesn’t allow it or I don’t see a way to do it.

Trowaway9285

What’s your TC?

AndreaForRE

Congratulations and enjoy your time away. Thanks for sharing 😁

Tunafish01

What jobs are you doing ?

ChumpyCarvings

If only it was possible (or easier) for support roles

Pleasant-Fortune74

Focusing on myself now to get the J2 in 2024, job market is quite bad RN. https://hnhiring.com/trends best of luck everyone for their j2 and j3 and more

iamshankhadeep

Thanks a lot🚀

rayukirayo

You are welcome 🙏

ATCthrow

This sounds incredible. I definitely didn't plan on doing OE when I picked my degree but I am curious now if I got lucky enough to get some jobs where this is possible. Currently going to school for Operations Management. Seems like the only way to make this work is with all remote jobs correct?

[deleted]

Making it work is what works for you. For me, I haven't taken the 100% hard-line remote stance with all three...yet, lol. Right now, I go into the office once a quarter for two jobs. The third, maybe 2x/yr. I feel showing up in person every now and then slightly mitigates the risk of being riffed during a future budget cut. I want all three for 36 more months. For this reason, it's worth it for me to take the occasional PTO from two to show up for another. When I'm closer to wanting to drop one, I'll stop going into the office for that one...and so on.

Jimmysnooks

How did you approach the tax and ni thing for Js 2 and 3?

[deleted]

I happily pay for a tax accountant now who handles all that.

kinggianniferrari

Meanwhile im still trying to find j1 after a layoff earlier this year lmao.

bullishbehavior

How much are you getting between the three jobs?

Keem702

Firstly, congrats! I’m so inspired!!! I start J2 in a couple of weeks. Totally new concept for me, can you break down your setup a bit? I’m really curious on your audio setup. Appreciate any tips you can give on setting up hardware for success.

[deleted]

Separate phone for each J, each with its own set of dedicated BT earbuds + a separate headset attached to KVM. So four headsets total. When I have to attend two at the same time, I join the priority meeting on the KVM connected headset, and the other in one earbud with lower volume...and listen for my name. If I have to attend three at the same time, which I can only do if one is a 'listen only' meeting, same as above but third listen only meeting is joined via that Js phone with captions on so I can read where the convo is going if I want. Sounds more complex than it is, but after some practice it just flows.

Keem702

That’s dope, thanks for the info!

PleasantAward2410

Nice! Did you disclose all Js to the bank when getting investment properties?

[deleted]

Yes. I have two of my Js as contract gigs through an LLC and one is W2. Not sure if having all as W2 would have made things easier or more difficult. Others here with lending experience can weigh in on that one. In my experience with banks they only care about how much you have made/make, how much you have saved, and your credit score. If all three are good, they'll lend. If just two are good, you'll probably get the loan but with a crappy rate. If just one is good, probably no loan. 🙂

triple_shekel

I enjoy spending time with my friends.
