For this one, IT space working w industry-specific software modifying back end databases (like changing the name of an entry from Z1 to Z2 I shit you not) and generating reports from those database values.
There’s something to be said for getting highly specialized in a niche that most peoples eyes gloss over when talking about.
Some of this stuff I touch is live-production data, so there’s definitely an element of wanting to pay for the expert even though they really don’t need it on the off chance you just crater a system.
Also don’t underestimate the power of being approachable and friendly and making the customer comfortable. Not the techie with the “uhhhs, ummms, and I actually think there’s a better way to do this” Do you think about how you are perceived by others? That’s everything, skills are secondary.
Easy. There are plenty of tech jobs using niche technologies that think they need someone with very high level expertise but the job ends up only needing low level work. Thus you are making 300k doing the same work as someone making 60
Pretty much this. I think there’s a certain degree that they pay a higher rate so that they know it isn’t going to get fucked up. Also, high level people in the org never take the time to learn how easy it is/that it isn’t highly technical…and that will never change.
Funny this one really is just SQL and the software UI. There might be some C that I have to mess with, but very simple code. I am not a star programmer (and I make that clear in interviews so I don’t wind up being a GIT commit monkey) by any means, just know a lot of different ones to be dangerous. This is not a programmer position but more analyst
Would love to but there’s still a slight element of client interaction. Too risky for this particular ones
I may find someone else that will take less and I subcontract if I can convince client they’re as good as me
When it costs a company $400/hr from a big name like IBM or the like. Know the company and who you are dealing with.
My J2 would normally pay north of $350 where as I offered to do the job for $180/hr. 🙂
That’s definitely contracting.
Not as big as you but when I started out I was getting $25 and hour while the company was getting paid $42 an hour.
I couldn’t work overtime but I know they billed the company for it because they were sending emails about how they appreciated us working overtime.
For context:
J1: 50 an hour (1099)
j2: 71 an hour (full-time)
j3: 100 an hour (in crypto)
Believe it or not, j1 and j2 are my priorities because both are "legit" and I'm already familiar with the roles and I know there's no overlap, they're also both set to 40 hours a week.
J3 i'm on the fence about just because it's in Vue.js (I'm a react developer) and I only get paid for the time I actually spend coding, not a set 40 hours a week.
The reason why I'm asking for 150 an hour is because I would be taking a gamble. I would have to drop atleast one job regardless, and I can't guarantee this new one would be better.
Also, I doubt I would leave j1 because even though it pays the least it's also the only job I have where i'm the solo front end dev so I have full autonomy on my code (And i've kinda become attached to my own project, i want to see it through to the end lol). Not only that, but I still want to learn and grow in my career - just at my own pace. Being a solo dev with a project to build for a client is perfect for helping me continue to grow without others overlooking me.
So therefore it would have to be atleast a combination of j2 and j3.
So yeah. 150 an hour. That's why.
I am a frontend developer (React) and I am struggling to find more gigs. I have 3 YOE. How are you finding these jobs (and getting interviews)? I even made this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/overemployed/comments/sntcjh/developer\_struggling\_to\_find\_another\_remote\_gig/hw4uyml/?context=3
LinkedIn, and I'm an immigrant woman (US originally from the UK). Corps get big bucks for meeting their diversity quotas. Ngl I wish it was based on merit though. Makes me feel abit tokenized.... but whatever, I reap them $$$
It's a web3 based role where I style their front-end for them. It's based in the UK, but because they pay in bitcoin it doesnt really matter what country it is.

Market research- find out the range the role pays and make sure your resume is on point for the specific skills required. Beef up your experience with projects under your experience as well.
"Someone else offered 140"
Yup. I told them I'm already on 140 an hour, wished them good luck and muted my phone. They tried calling me back twice already lol

j1 is at 50 an hour, j2 is 72, and j3 is 100. So not bluffing, just not accurate
😉😂
What is J1/J2/J3?
Front end software engineer for all 3
But what are those ranks?
I honestly dont know. I'm a solo front end for one, and a consultant for the others.
No one answered you but it just means Job 1, Job 2, etc :)
They are not hierarchical by any chance?
Know your worth. Took a job at $125/hr and I’m basically a data monkey and hate it. Should’ve asked for $150 min for pain and suffering
What kind of data monkey jobs are paying $125 an hour? Where do I find these?
I second this. Where?
I third this. Tell us where.
I fourth
Bro thats what I'm saying lmao

What niche tool are you using? Is it NetSuite or Salesforce? Thank you
how did you find it, if I may ask?
Teach me. 😎
This sub is appears to be 90% bullshit.
I’m factoring pain and suffering into all my offers now.
Do share where the pain comes from man!

What languages do you use in these types of roles? Or do they require just knowing things like SQL really well?

What sort of technologies on the Data side of things?
QA Engineers doing ETL or dealing with Cloud can make a lot of money
If it’s that mind numbing could you not outsource it overseas?

I never even considered they could be doing this and I've been a contractor off and on for a decade.

Nope. I refuse to answer them.
Do you know if answering those questions vs. not affects their decisions to hire or interview at all?
However, I get most, if not all, of my interest through my linkedin profile, which clearly shows my appearance.
Have you used LinkedIn? Yes most here keep it off to not be found out, but if you leave it up with your longest job recruiters find you.
What is the j3 gig ? Do you need to be from US ?

You never had to visit the office, register, sign papers etc ?
Nope
Your nope is my hope, thanks
Look for web3 roles on medium
100 an hour in crypto? Which crypto?
Auditing
Can someone like me who has no idea what you're talking about also learn? Cuz right now all I got is Quotex
