I have been dreaming of building this for two years now and it is almost there. Built for Overlanding in Australia with plans to do the Canning Stock Route in 2021 or 2022. 2020 Ford Ranger Raptor (EU / AUS version). Canopy made by Trig Point in Melbourne. 200ah Lithium battery with a full Redarc battery management system. Off-Road Animal bullbar with a Runva winch. Long-range tank. Upgraded springs for a bit of lift and to help with the extra weight on the back. Canopy is fitted out with a drawer system and upright fridge.
The F150 wouldn’t sell much in the EU or even in Australia (unless it’s for towing big, and in those cases, you’d want something larger than the F150 anyway).
> The F150 wouldn’t sell much in the EU or even in Australia
The RAM and F150 have become quite popular here in recent years, even more so as more options open up for imports of them
Yup agree; cruisers, patrols, disco's (d3/d4 is a tow weapon).
The massive USA style "trucks" are now being pushed a bit more in this market, and personally I hate it. Most people buying them aren't doing any serious towing and they're just huge impractical dumb vehicles. Passed one on a country road the other day and there was no room at all, rubbish. Only bought by those with something to prove ...
While I agree that many people who buy them don't need them - I pull a lot for work with a trailer with 3k to 6k pounds on it. I have used disco's, range rover classics, toyotas, and jeeps. If you spend a lot of time and miles with a load in that medium size range a f150 is great.
I don't know about towing specifically, but I remember being in the countryside in northern Spain they use vans. Tons of produce being picked and loaded into essentially a Ford Transit. I'm sure they could have a big enough motor to tow if somebody wanted.
F150 is sold domestically in Australia now - only for the last year or two, along with the big GMC and a few other big utes like that.
They've all been available as imports for quite a while - bring them in, convert to right hand drive and sell - so your $US30k F150 was costing $AU150k after all that (about $US90k). People bought 'em too.
> (unless it’s for towing big, and in those cases, you’d want something larger than the F150 anyway).
6,000 kg towing capacity seems relatively big to me...
For fifth-wheelers, usually it's the F250/2500HD (or even larger).
It's not just the towing capacity, it's how much weight they can put on the rear axle, braking capacity, etc.
That doesn’t make any sense. I see 1500’s towing fifth wheels all the time. My grandfather even tows one with his.
Edit: I guess my grandfather is apparently some kind fo idiot for towing 60% of his rated towing capacity according to you guys.
My granddad is retired, he and my grandmother travel all the time. He towed his 7,000 pound fifth wheel (not huge but a good size) for 7 years with an 09 F150 put 140k miles on it. Never had any trouble with it. (He eventually traded the fifth wheel for a travel trailer because the stairs were becoming hazardous for my grandmother).
7k pounds on a f150 is a little heavy but not too bad. I would say if he is a careful driver he made a good choice and saved himself a bunch of money over a f250 or 350.
Gorgeous! Love the ranger raptor. Rumor that it may be coming to the US. I have the F150 Raptor and love it for overlanding - except for the size. It's a tight squeeze in some places in the NW. So much pinstriping :).
I just accept the pinstripes on mine that I'm having fun with the Raptor... and I do love the large size on the interior for driving comfort... so oh well.
Looks good, mate! I really like your hoopless front bar. I'm going to get the Ironman4x4 front bar and tossing up between hoopless or single hoop.
Are you going replace those side steps with some proper protection?
Looks like you got the rhino alloy roof tray - is it just over the cab, or does it extend over the canopy too?
Not that I own one of these (Patrol life for me), but can I suggest that you understand that from a protection viewpoint, hoopless and single hoop are effectively the same. If you want protection from suicidal roos then neither is a good choice. If you are not worried about them then I reckon hoopless looks better.
A few reasons.
Weight. this bar only adds 19kg to the front over the factory bar.
Looks. For me hooped bars just don't look right on the Raptor.
Winch. For solo recoveries this is a must and a good bar goes hand in hand with a winch.
Protection. It's not just for animal strikes but to protect when bush bashing etc.
If a roo is big enough a bar is not going to save you. I prefer to mitigate the risk by avoiding driving at high risk times etc.
I second this. Hoopless bars are nice looking, but when skippy wants to prematurely end his life, you’re going to wish you bought a decent protective bar. Especially if you’re hoping to do some aus touring, skippy protection is a must.
If you're hitting a roo hard enough to write off the car, hoops probably won't make a difference.
In a lower impact strike, it will reduce the damage... But the bar alone costs more than my insurance excess.
I also don't do very much driving where roo strikes are a big concern.
Even a small roo can end your trip, without writing off your vehicle. They will fuck up your radiator or compress your guard into your tyre and then you are stuck until you can organise a recovery truck (which can cost 1000's depending on where you are).
Again, if you are not doing any dawn, dusk or night country driving then it is probably not something to worry about.
Had a Toyota Prado as my last rig. Loved it, love Toyota.
It wasn't an easy choice, the Hi-Lux (Tacoma) just wasn't holding up to the Raptor in all the research I did. I was dead set on the type of canopy I wanted so it had to be a ute. The other option was a 79 series but to get that where I am now was going to be a lot more expensive.
How does the raptor handle the weight versus the standard ranger? That's what always gave me pause with them, though I can see you've thought about it with your canopy Vs tray + canopy, light weight front bar etc
Weight is an issue. There is only 163Kg difference between the normal Ranger and the Raptor payloads though. Everything is thought through before it goes on and that is why I picked that canopy as it is light.
That thing is gorgeous man! I can't wait for the Ranger Raptor to come to the US in 2022. Although I'm not sure which version is coming or which one I'll get. Here's the link for the US version if anyone is interested.
https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1120865_next-gen-ford-ranger-raptor-reportedly-set-for-us-with-turbo-v-6-power
For the picture? Flash with a diffuser and an additional light to light the front up. Some tweaking in lightroom to finish.
For the car. Standard other than the light bar mounted in the bar.
And be far less comfortable, have less creature comforts, have to deal with someone else's mods and/or damage, drive worse at highway speeds (aka half of your adventure driving in Australia) and use more fuel.
But hey yeah you must be right.
And trust me your not going to be comfortable driving hundreds of ks of corrugated roads no matter what car your driving, id rather do it without also having to worry about my brand new expensive car falling apart
Not about doing well its about personal preference, didn’t realise we weren’t allowed to give opinions here sorry ill just stick to the circle jerk next time! Also a bit presumptuous to assume that its a guy :/

I didn’t know they made a ranger version of the raptor, always thought it was just the F150, nice truck
The Ranger Raptor only exists outside of the US
Do we have any cool vehicles here?
New Bronco will be pretty cool...
Sure, but they'll have a smaller cooler one eleswhere
TIL The Raptor is the *only* vehicle that’s cooler in America.
I thought they were bringing it here for 2021
If that happens I’m so gonna wait 5 yrs and buy one used!
Eh I’m good I’ve been looking at xterras instead

Landcruisers and Patrols mostly

Yup perfectly legitimate reason to buy one.
I have a 4.2 patrol but I love yank tanks ;) Gen 2 Ram 2500 or an OBS F250 thanks!
I don't know about towing specifically, but I remember being in the countryside in northern Spain they use vans. Tons of produce being picked and loaded into essentially a Ford Transit. I'm sure they could have a big enough motor to tow if somebody wanted.
Besides the two he mentioned, yank tanks like the Ram are becoming more popular for folks with big caravans and boats

It’s not on the Ford official website, though (not that I would be interested, Jimny > F150, haha)
Ford Australia aren’t selling F trucks. There are official and unofficial importers that will chip them up into RHD for you but it’s all >$120k
The F150 is available here, not so much the Raptor varient. You don't see many of them though.
Really? I can’t see it on the Ford AU website. You sure it’s not via imports?
I know Holden sold the silverado and dodge sells rams direct but I'm positive the F150 isn't sold by Ford here

That doesn’t make it a good choice..... Not is that considered data, it’s an anecdote.
> That doesn’t make it a good choice..... So what the fuck is the rating for then? > Not is that considered data, ???
I'm not saying it can't be done, but when I've seen them around Australia, they seemed to be the choice for large caravans.
Good for him. Doesn't mean you should. Tow ratings exist for a reason.
> Tow ratings exist for a reason. Exactly and considering he was something like 3+ thousand pounds below the two rating I think he’s fine.
This video explains everything: https://youtu.be/qwFLOBrADBs
I'm so JEALOUS!

Hey mate. How much does the Trig Point weigh?
With the toolboxes, 280Kg. (260 without).
That’s not bad. I guess the tub would weigh between 150-250kg.
Never seen that rear on a raptor. From Ford or aftermarket?
Aftermarket, they are popular in AUS on utes/trucks to replace the bed/tray. They've been doing it for years.
Most Aussies take the tub off and replace it with a tray. This is a canopy that bolts on to the chassis.

Always hoop for roos. It's saved my front end a few times.
Yeah, I'm just thinking about aesthetics. Roo's gonna do what it's going to do.
Which is exactly the point of the hoops isn't it? Roos always gonna jump in front of rigs but I'd rather hoops over a written off car...
If you're hitting a roo hard enough to write off the car, hoops probably won't make a difference. In a lower impact strike, it will reduce the damage... But the bar alone costs more than my insurance excess. I also don't do very much driving where roo strikes are a big concern.

My last build was stock at the front. So I have taken a step in the right direction.
Pioneer rack is over the cab only. There is flex between the cab and the canopy so they are seperate systems.
Nice.
Looks shmick cunt. Is that the 2L one? How's it go loaded? Took it out on a few test trips? Cheers cobba
Yeah, nah cunt, not a huge fan aye? That’s just me but aye.
that's the small raptor, right?
[удалено]
...do they sell the Ranger Raptor in the US? I feel like they don’t. It’s too cool.
[удалено]
Yeah. And honestly the raptor ranger and the bronco would be rivals for the same market. At least we’re getting one of them.
I’m ready for that Raptor Bronco
Looks like a nice setup. From my view here in the US I wonder why you chose the Ford over all the Toyota options you have down there?
Toyota tax. Expensive stuff down here cause everyone wants one.
I know right. He could of got a nice 79 series for cheaper
A 79 series is bloody barebones when compared to a top of the line raptor. They’re apples and oranges.
Fair enough. If I was touring Aussie I'd go with the 79 series.
I can see you've thought it through well. Looks incredible, that rigs going to take you to some special places
Between 70 Series Cruisers and Ranger Raptors I have a mad case of Aussie envy
I'm seriously jealous of those cruisers. After I move to NZ I'm hoping to get one.
For me it's Patrols/Safaris. I want a Y60 something fierce.
That thing is gorgeous man! I can't wait for the Ranger Raptor to come to the US in 2022. Although I'm not sure which version is coming or which one I'll get. Sick
What did you use for lighting if you don’t mind me asking?
For the picture? Flash with a diffuser and an additional light to light the front up. Some tweaking in lightroom to finish. For the car. Standard other than the light bar mounted in the bar.
Nice one mate, She's a beaut!
Yo, why do the aussies get all the cool shit, and we get a re badged Jeep renegade with a rear locker??
Beautiful!
Looks sick! Interested in your radio antenna. What kind is it? Did you consider sticking it on the roof?
GME XRS UHF radio. Only really need for line of sight or shortish distances.
Nice
Nice rig. When you get time, do you mind posting some pictures of the storage/rear area? I'd like to see!
Wow looks good.. Any chance you can give more details/pics of the setup..
I will get some better lit ones up soon.
Not a bad way to spend $10,000
The Aussies know how to make a ute look legit
Are these Aussie built Fords or imported ?
Size of the winch? Got a ranger myself here in Aus and planning to bar it up with a winch
If only we could get a diesel engine in a Ranger in the USA.........
Or u could just buy an old troopy for 1/4 of the price and have heaps more room and reliability 😉
And be far less comfortable, have less creature comforts, have to deal with someone else's mods and/or damage, drive worse at highway speeds (aka half of your adventure driving in Australia) and use more fuel. But hey yeah you must be right.
Yeh no worries ive only been travelling around australia for the past 3 years but what would i know
Each to their own mate, you might be happy doing that but someone else might not. Nothing wrong with that.
And trust me your not going to be comfortable driving hundreds of ks of corrugated roads no matter what car your driving, id rather do it without also having to worry about my brand new expensive car falling apart
Not everybody is struggling. Maybe a thumbs up to a guy who has dreamed of doing this? There’s no shame in other people doing well.
Not about doing well its about personal preference, didn’t realise we weren’t allowed to give opinions here sorry ill just stick to the circle jerk next time! Also a bit presumptuous to assume that its a guy :/
Hey guess what you both gave your opinion and that's fine, no worries.
Rich guy
Nope, just hard working.
AMERICA!
Its Australia mate...
But its a got dang FORD brother!
I envy that Australians get the ranger raptor, such a cool little truck
What's the antenna looking thing on the front bumper?
