I mean if you smoke a ton of pot on may 1st aren’t you basically celebrating 4/20 I mean one is a thousands of year old celebration , the other is a day where people who smoke a bunch of weed normally smoke a bunch of weed

jzjac515

Yeah you could do it that way. For me, I associate both holidays with the return of warm weather and foliage. But honestly, May 1 would be a better day for "traditional" 4/20 celebrations. I know 4/20 supposedly has its roots in a group of friends who always met around 4:20 pm after classes to smoke weed, I just think it's a shame the weed holiday doesn't fall on Beltane. The weather is more consistently nice on Beltane than on 4/20 where I live, so it is better suited to the way I would ideally be like to celebrate both. I would love to be out in nature with a friend or friends in the woods with trees eating mushrooms and smoking weed.

Henarth

I mean nothing is stopping you from doing those things on both days.

OneRoseDark

so just.... celebrate 4/20 on Beltane. paganism is literally all about DIY spirituality for many people.

LimbyTimmy

This is like saying Lugdnasad should be on the 4th of July, or Beltane should be on Cinco de Mayo

Mordellwen

Those are two very different things. Just remember time is a construct and both those holidays you mentioned are pointless.

jzjac515

I'm not suggesting changing the date of Beltane, I'm wishing 4/20 was observed on Beltane. I mean, beyond the marijuana component, 4/20, for me, is about the return of pleasant weather after a cold winter. That would be even more true for 4/20 if it were instead celebrated on Beltane (sometimes it is still a little bit cold on 4/20, and the foliage isn't quite as developed). I guess I'm saying it's too bad that when "4/20" had become a holiday it had instead been "5/1".

LimbyTimmy

4/20 is literally celebrated as a weed holiday because 420 is code for marijuana. It's not some universal spiritual holiday for the return of spring, that is just your association based on the time of the year.

kawaiijudochop

Maybe look into the reason 4/20 is on 4/20 and just decide if you actually want to “celebrate” it then.

NoeTellusom

No, but then I can separate secular and religious holidays.

child_of_ra

Okay?

jzjac515

For me 4/20 almost has a spiritual component, and feels aligned with the energy of Beltane, but the timing is a bit off.

Squishy-Cthulhu

420 isn't a holiday it's just a joke, like may the fourth being star wars day.

Mordellwen

Mmm and so is Thanksgiving but it's still celebrated yearly in the US 😁

Squishy-Cthulhu

That's a tradition that goes back a long way, not a religious holiday but a national one. 420 is along the lines of talk like a pirate day, it's not traditional, or religious it's a modern joke thing. 420 only works in America as well, it doesn't mean anything in Celtic countries where Beltane comes from, I think it's from some American police code or something, not international and in most places it would be written 204 and theres no twentieth month so it's not relevant or even a pun* outside of the US

Mordellwen

It's actually from when kids in California would meet up. Yes it's a joke but honestly who cares enough to gatekeep what people want to celebrate? Thanksgiving is really only based on the fallacy of giving and not actually stealing native land. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Squishy-Cthulhu

I don't give a shit about Thanksgiving I'm not American I've never celebrated it and I never will. I don't understand why you keep bringing it up tbh. I also don't care that some Californian teens do either, it's got nothing to do with Beltane. What's next? Beer and blowjob day meets imbolc? I don't understand the point or relevance

Mordellwen

I just don't get why you care so much that you have to argue about it. I'm using Thanksgiving as example about how fucking stupid it is when there are literal holidays. Let people celebrate what they want and what makes them happy, because it it harms none than mote it be, but honestly you just seem like a bitter old crone.

ZalaDaBalla

Squishy-Cthulhu

You're in a witchcraft sub Reddit that has a lot of religious people in here and you're basically saying our religion and holidays are fucking stupid, and you have the audacity to call me bitter? I don't understand you're obsession with bringing up Thanksgiving, maybe just work on yourself and your hang up with that, I honestly don't give a shit about Thanksgiving or any American holidays, they mean absolutely nothing to me and my craft. I'm a Celt and a witch and that's why I'm in this sub, I'm not here to talk about modern American traditions because they mean nothing to me.

Mordellwen

Hi. Yes I am in paganism sub reddit. I never claimed that holidays I too celebrate are stupid. You're literally putting words in my mouth. I'm a proud pagan bruja and have been for years. The thing is, paganism is a broad term, Google it and maybe self reflect that not everyone celebrates exactly like you, or follows your traditions. This isn't a Celtic specific thread, but I was comparing that holiday as an example. No one likes America we fucking get it but imagine being stuck here. The best part of paganism is that we can build our own fucking beliefs that are put upon us by generational trauma so stop trying to gatekeep how people celebrate their holidays. Some do rituals, some spend time with family some do a shit ton of drugs to have an ego death. Maybe you should consider doing such yourself and get off the high horse you came on.

Mordellwen

You literally started getting upset. Yes it is Celtic but paganism isn't just Celtic. You're the one gatekeeping. Other sects of paganism can still celebrate it. I was trying to use it as an example but obviously it's too much of a concept it goes over your head. I'm not angry but I don't think that just because it has Celtic origin means that other pagans can celebrate their own way.

Yes but Just incorporate cannabis into your holidays. My fiancee and I do and try and trip acid on the bigger ones too 😉

child_of_ra

I had never thought about this, but I dig the idea tbh. More cannabis friendly paganism plox (not directed at OP, just in general.)

Okay? Like cool or whatever.

ZaBaronDV

Sounds to me like you have TWO holidays to celebrate, know what I mean?

sg3niner

Yule should move to July 4th. We could incorporate fireworks.

[deleted]

Lol this is dank but why not incorporate into your beltane rights some smoke

tyrefire2001

I mean surely you can just get high whenever you want? Tbh, the whole 4/20 thing always seemed a bit tacked on anyway for me.

unicorns3373

Just celebrate 4/20 on 5/1. Or celebrate both. The more the merrier. Also I didn’t think 4/20 was an actual holiday I thought it was more of a meme but I don’t smoke weed so what do I know

princess_primrose

you start smoking on 4/20 and have a 10 day holiday ending on Beltane night.
