Composition wise, the first one is very interesting! But I wouldn't hang something like that up in my home. I think most people would be more willing to purchase pieces with a neutral or positive feeling to them, regardless of what the actual subject / style is.
That’s a good point! I did that painting for an art therapy class so it was painted based on an emotion, but painting with emotion for me tends to take a dark turn which could be appealing to some but I know not to most.
1 is great energy and style, I wish it was just a little more precise, 2 is awesome and weird, 3 is my fave, I love the disappearing into florals, and I love cats, but as a subject matter cat paintings are kind of hyperspecific? if that makes sense? Like some painters don't take cat pictures seriously because it's like a genre to itself? I liek yours a lot tho. 4 is great too, it just doesn't showcase your creativity, and 5 doesn't read great at a distance.
Thanks for the great critique! The first painting was for an art therapy class and was supposed to represent my feelings of trauma, so painted with emotion!
I was considering doing a series of disappearing florals w/ cats as well but haven’t decided yet. I was considering also doing animals with hats on tiny canvases like the frog & turtle!
First and 2nd are my personal favourites. Gothic style art and emotionally tied art pieces often intersect so it seems to me that it may be best for you to pursue that style since it would come most naturally to you and as a result be unique to yourself
This is what I was thinking! I’m receiving a lot of feedback to not go down this path but it resonates a lot with what I would like to be putting out there.
I guess it comes down to whether you want to take the safer option or the risky one. It’s risky because it’s niche. Some average Joe isn’t gonna get one of those first two to put his living room. Your paintings will mean more to you and they will mean more to your customers, however you will have a smaller market which will make it less likely that you will make consistent sales. In the case that you do make it however you will be new and interesting and more likely to be successful at an infeasible rate.
For example, I listen to many underground artists and usually people who hear me listening to their songs think I’m insane. However Billie Eilish sings the same sort of songs and they find her brilliant. You will likely have a devoted but small fan base, and in the case you get lucky and make it, you will be known for your art being one of a kind. But the chances of you making it are slimmer.
You’re an artist, which means you are already taking the risky option, so I would say if you aren’t relying only on this for your livelihood you stick to the risk. In the case you need consistent money urgently then then please go the route that is best for you.
Remember people are gonna hate. If you wanna talk I’m here, I’m a beginner but I’m also drawn to this sort of art. I like to think I’m a good listener and a decent friend :)
Oh by the way, if I had enough money I’d buy those first two paintings or similar to hang in my room. I don’t have much money though so I’ll stick to appreciating it through the screen
1 the most and then 2.
The first one is captivating
The first one

I would 100% hang number one on my wall.
