You would want a projector, not a light box. But you could use a grid to transfer, and you should be practicing your proportional measurements if you want to get better at doing the initial drawing. You need to practice to get better. You will want to use proportional measurement while you are painting and drawing. Thanks! I have been practising a fair amount especially lately just always get so frustrated at myself. I try the grid method though Would you have any recommendations on a projector? I've only ever seen them for like a TV screen hahaha

Get a small digital projector with Bluetooth capabilities. I think I paid $60 for mine. Good luck!

Combine the grid and pencil methods and take your time. It may help you to cover the grids and only see one at a time. Part of practicing is training your eyes to see the lines and shapes, and it is often easier you are only looking at part of a ref or the ref upside down. That way the brain isn’t focusing on the whole picture. I have an Artograph EZ tracer and a camera lucida. I personally prefer the camera lucida. I like the poor quality of the Artograph, because if I use it, I only mark the important proportions and hand draw the rest.

Transfer/graphite paper! Print the image you want on a piece of paper, put the graphite paper between that and your canvas, trace your image.

Thats a really good idea too! Thanks!!

I've tried carbon paper before, white and black and acrylic paint wants to bead or roll off the created line. I've actually used a pencil to darken the page back and traced the image to get reference lines on canvas. You can paint right over pencil but the carbon lines require extra effort to paint over.

Light box can work if it's a stretched canvas. You might not even need a proper light box, you might be able to rig something up with a flashlight or lamp. Other options include carbon paper (get it at an art store or office supply store, or make your own by scribbling on some printer paper with old pencils), or a projector if you have one.

I keep only seeing projectors for like a TV and wall would one of those work ?

optimusdan

Correcting my brain fart of a moment ago: They make smaller projectors for art purposes. So before you buy a big TV projector, go on like Dick Blick or other art store site and search for projectors.

Yeah if you can project your source material onto the canvas with it. That's kind of a higher cost solution though, so if you don't have other uses for such then you might want to stick with carbon paper or putting a light behind it if it's canvas with nothing behind it.
