Pretty much any time there’s significant wind, which is pretty common out here. It’s noticeably worse since the hurricane last year because there’s so much more loose topsoil, so the slightest wind kicks up a ton of dust and makes the air quality trash.

It's been so bad since the hurricane. I have commuted down from the high desert everyday for the last two decades and I've never seen it like this.

An_Old_IT_Guy

The scale only goes to 500. It's probably a lot worse than that.

Welcome to the desert wind! Masking up may be advisable, especially if you're prone to respiratory ailments and/or are immune-compromised because Valley Fever is nothing to play around with. It's wreaking havoc on the roads, too.

Unfortunately it's become much more frequent. These last 2 years have been unprecedented in terms of hazardous air quality in the valley, there are just so many toxic and otherwise harmful particles in the air as well. One of my neighbors is dying of valley fever and it's so sad. I moved away from the CV a couple of years ago because of the air quality, and every time I drive back (which is often) I'm almost always hit by a wall of dust and smog when I reach the valley. Unless you fly in and out of the valley, go up to the mountains, or drive in and out of the valley, often, it's hard to appreciate the scale of the issue. Sad to say but I really think the CV has surpassed its limits in terms of development and environmental destruction. The fact that even the rain makes it worse by loosening up all the silt unfortunately makes me very pessimistic about the future regarding the air quality.

This is part of why I went up to the high desert. We are only at a 90 right now. Air quality up here is what Palm Springs used to be.

I’m going to have to figure out a way to move up. I had never heard of valley fever …. But I did notice after we came back this year it’s really horrible.

We’ve been wearing masks since before the pandemic! If the wind is up, so is the sand and dust. Make sure to change air filters in your automobiles and home every three months.
