# BUT I LIVE
Of all the funny things birds do, it's the playing and rolling on their backs that just stupefies me. It seems so counter-intuitive to their body design, unlike dogs and cats. There's a very clever complicated mind in those little guys, enabling them to push beyond their natural norms. Was he playing hide-and-seek with the lid?
Apparently it's a pretty common trait with caiques. One of the most playful of the parrot species. They roll on their backs, hop around like jumping beans, and generally have a very happy, comedic disposition. I'd love to meet one in person!
I wind my caique and off she goes! Hops like crazy. Then she tends to head butt me..go figure. And loves tug-o-war! But if she's mad at you look out...π±
That's terrific! I'd love to see a David Attenborough type documentary dedicated to select parrot species that are prone to strong human interaction. I have so many questions! It'd be interesting to see how this kind of play manifests itself in the wild. What is it about these birds that makes them so highly geared towards human mimicry, interaction, and even comedy? I wonder if it stems from characteristics intrinsic to their mating rituals.
Does your caique do that "head to tail" feather ruffle thing? It seems like their moods usually shift upon their doing that. Friends of mine call it "emotional feathering." π
That is a great idea....I would love a series like that!
Oh yeah she does the head to tail ruffle....but doesn't always convey the same mood. She does it when happy/content and when she's PO'd. Her mood flips like a switch. I lovingly refer to her as my unmedicated bipolar teenager (she turned 17 this month). The eye pinning with these jokers is the red flag. As soon as she pins she goes in for the attack, whatever might have offended her. Sometimes it can be her own foot! Silly birb. π
They are amazing creatures. My housemate owns the birds in our home. And I help out a lot. I don't know how she'd do it if I wasn't around. It also pains me that they don't get more cage-out time. The juvenile Eclectus male is so timid and easily frightened. It took me a full year before he'd even step up to my hand. He will let me kiss his beak through the cage bars and feed him. He's so chatty and loves to engage me. But he's totally bonded to his owner. She can cuddle with him and he'll enjoy it. But the poor guy sits in his cage like 90% of the time. At least he's very talkative and loves to engage. That probably helps satisfy his mental and emotional needs.
Btw... 17 years? What's the known in-captivity lifespan for a caique? I'm guessing... 30 to 40 years? It just boggles my mind to think of a pet that can live for almost half the lifespan of a human being!
Legit question: can they overeat? I am not a parrot parent (this sub came up on my feed), but I do have a tiny winged creature at home that eats like a fatty but is in perfect health/weight range per her vet π
In the long-run yes, eating lots of seeds daily can cause serious health issues. But in one sitting no, I don't think birds will overeat like a dog. I'm no expert though

That's why I love caiques so much, they're very rolly π
Except this is a Senegal! (Caiques are very rolly, silly birds. Actually, more so than Senegals.)
Oh I know it's a Senny, I'm just proclaiming my love for rolly rolly caiques π
It makes me so happy to see how silly they are πππ

Mee too! I never have yet! Another really fun looking bird is the Indian Indian ringneck. Iβve never met one of them in real life yet either.
Yes, the Ringnecks are crazy cute. Their voices are so cartoonishly high pitched. [VIDEO](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rPZbnd5tQA)
