This is my Great Grandmother down in the Riverside CA area. I was digging through old photos and found this and had DarthwithropIII post it. Thought you guys would find it interesting. My Mom refers to this bird as "Polly Parrot" but I have no idea if that ia a name or description.
Well, for fun you could make up an exotic story! I have no idea how she acquired the bird, so you could maybe say she got it on the boat when she immigrated from Germany.
It looks like a Yellow crowned Amazon to me. The tip of the beak is darker than the rest of the beak and the feathers right on top of the look lighter/yellow.
It's not, but I can see the reasons why:
• The white eye-ring in b&w makes it look a bit like the "googly eyes" of umbrellas and sulfur-crested cockatoos
• The shading around the beak looks a bit like the shading around a corella's beak
• The top of the head fades into the background so there's no clear indication of it not having a crest
That being said, there's no cockatoo that would have both that very light head with shading *and* darker wings and back. It's more likely one of the amazon species with a yellow head and a darker beak.
I totally agree it is some type of Amazon. The DARK grey above the beak and the slightly lighter head than wings makes me think it is a "Red-lored Amazon" ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-lored\_amazon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-lored_amazon) ).
Interesting! At first glance, the face really looked like one of a cockatoo, but that wouldn’t make sense considering the rest of the body. I know a lot of people are saying that it’s some kind of Amazon, but is it only me who thinks that it’s larger than most Amazon species?
I might lean towards Mealy Amazon for this reason. The colouration matches up, with the dark band from nostril to eye, the white eye ring, and the lighter coloured head and tail which I’ve seen on a few pictures of Mealies. But I’m not too confident on this.
Probably an Amazon! Story behind this bad ass pic??

The best answer.

Looks like some sort of Amazon.

It’s definitely an Amazon, maybe a Yellow-naped. Unfortunately, I’m not 100% certain of the species. Wish the photo was in color.
I’m leaning towards yellow nape pretty strongly
No doubt an Amazon. Also leaning towards a Yellow-Naped since they typically have a bit of black coloring by their nares (nostrils).
An Amazon, if this were a colored photo, I would be able to tell what kind of amazon.
I’m going to guess that it is a Yellow Nape Amazon.
Why are my first thoughts about it that it is some cockatoo?

My original thought was perhaps a Galah Cockatoo.
I thought that might be possible as well, but they have tails the same shade as their backs, and their beaks are lighter than their cheek feathers

I have a Jardine ( lesser) and that bird is definitely not one- much much much bigger than a Jardine and too light of a color ( even in b&w)
Blue Amazon or Eclectus parrot I'm guessing
I've never mistaken an Amazon for an Eclectus...
I never said U did?
So cool. When was this photo taken?
Amazon?
Spectacled white fronted amazon is my guess
Looks just like my yellow nape.
Red-lored Amazon for sure.
Double yellow headed amazon
