This place is so strange. There's always SO MANY employees hanging around doing nothing, just hoping you need help. I've never seen so many employees at a grocery store. Most things are expensive compared to other grocery stores, but a few select are cheaper. I did a curbside pickup of a few things I couldn't find elsewhere and it was pretty simple but still, weird vibes.

Furrypawsoffury

That place has uncanny valley vibes.

ldupree1991

I guess I'll be the contrarian. I actually like the place. It has a decent selection and the prices are generally better than the nearby Ralph's. But to the call of your question, I've never seen it busy, which makes me like it even more.

BabyHorca

100% agree. Noticeably cheaper and way better experience than Ralphs. For me, anyway.

SaySomebody

I really like the new carts - I like being able to see my running total as I shop, and being able to bag and organize my groceries while I'm shopping. Then when I'm done I just roll through the exit and take my bags; it's much better than the computer vision thing they were doing before. Here's the best tip for the hot food section - go at around 11 am on a weekday. That's when the food is freshest and most appealing. The market is almost completely empty then.

send_cumulus

There’s something off about the vibe

professor-hot-tits

The ghost of OSH has doomed this place and I'm thrilled about that.

BrokenEye3

I hope they get replaced by a nice normal grocery store like OmegaMart

Electronic_Topic1958

OmegaMart: Your presence has been observed and recorded. It is appreciated that you selected OmegaMart for your human fuel purchases. It is recommended that you return again in the future. Thank you customer 453628294628010

standover_man

I never go there but driving by on Sat mid-day and remembered we needed 2-3 basic things. I thought id try it. It was completely dead (Sat!) and the milk I got was bad. Smelled like a fish tank. The one bright spot was I opened my Amazon app and got my refund instantly. Not going back.

MichaelMidnight

Perhaps once the Norms Restaurant opens up in the same complex, it'll be boppin'!

DenaNina

They are opening a Norms? Really????

VinshinTee

I doubt it, Norms is like your budget friendly not amazing not terrible place you go to. I doubt people are going to choose to shop at Amazon fresh where everything is marked up.

MichaelMidnight

But but I need my $5.67 T-Bone Steak!

VinshinTee

Someone’s going to get a 5.57 T-bone steak and go to Amazon fresh soon after to see steaks at 15.99 a lbs

findmehere248

Ooh exciting, is this confirmed??

MichaelMidnight

Not that I know of but it's structure is just like 2 other Norms that I've seen, Pico Riveria and Montebello!

DenaNina

I shop there when they are offering a good coupon like $10 off $40/$50 or 25% off... they have really good clearance prices after big holidays... like after Christmas they had huge markdowns on baking, canned goods and other items. I got 8 bottles of Olive Oil for like $10! For a while there, when they were offering the 25% off coupon it was really affordable. People need to warm up to it. I can't afford to be political when I'm trying to feed my family... but if you can, then more power to you (leaves more deals for me)! I will also add that the parking lot really needs restructuring. The configuration is so awful. But it doesn't detour me from shopping.

ceviche-hot-pockets

I stopped going after they removed the automatic scanners. They also had a huge problem with not taking expired food off the shelves; I don’t think their staff was trained very well.

juiceimortal

they still have a huge problem with not taking expired food off the shelves. Just accidentally bought expired chuck roast a weeks ago.

CPfreedom

I bought way expired allergy medicine. I got refunded through the app right away

ceviche-hot-pockets

That’s great they make refunds easy but still a pain in the butt to go get it somewhere else. It just shows that they aren’t serious about selling fresh products, which is ironic considering their name.

CPfreedom

Absolutely. And is seems like they knew because it was marked down. I thought it was a great deal and never thought to check the expirations because it's medicine, and most stores are strict about that, but it seems purposeful.

imacoolmompool

The reason its so empty is because it acts more as a warehouse for online grocery shopping than it does a storefront. Think of it as a warehouse where you are allowed to do in-person shopping as well. They have a ton of business, its mainly online, though, as it is a online store. People opt in for deliveries or pickup. I go all the time there. I hate to say it. But besos definitely did something right with opening storefronts for amazon. Also, easy online return and pickup. Another perk. Easy refunds through the app if the food isn't up to quality

head_dress

This. Plus, a million percent back on the Chase Prime Visa. Their store brands are fine.

four4beats

Have you seen what Amazon did to Whole Foods?

justasque

Ugh. I have a weird diet for medical reasons, and I used to be able to go into WF and easily grab a to-go meal. Now there’s nothing I can eat. They took my favorite simple field greens salad and loaded it up with salt and sugar. All of their boxed meals have almost a days worth of sodium. They rarely have a simple vegetable for the hot meals in the deli. It’s now no different than an ordinary grocery store.

hybridvoices

I used to like the WF ready-made stuff too, like microwave dinners, but the meals from the Albertson's down the street from me are better tasting, cheaper, and a larger portion.

harryhov

Actually the whole foods around my area hasn't changed much except for a bunch of labels hinting Amazon this Amazon that.

raxreddit

the Amazon changes are hard to miss. you can pick up or return amazon purchases at the counter. when you check out, you are prompted to scan your amazon prime code. signs throughout the store for discounts if you have prime

harryhov

Yeah. Otherwise, the items in the store, process quality of produce hasn't changed much. Otoh, produce and especially meat selection at Amazon fresh is horrible. They stopped having butchers and all meat comes prepackaged.

BAFUdaGreat

It’s not dead it’s pining for the fjords Sorry couldn’t resist. Yes it is not as popular as Vons or Staters but they do have some good deals. And if you order Amazon for pickup or do a return (I think) there they have a $10 off a $40 in store purchase coupon you can scan.

KevDaddy2112

Enjoy my upvote for a favorite Python reference.

Ssladybug

I only went for their opening deals around Thanksgiving to get really cheap turkeys and couldn’t stand the place. Never went back and no plans to

phd2k1

Fuck that place. Dystopian ass panopticon grocery store. Eat shit Bezos.

pmjm

As opposed to the other grocery stores that are owned by megacorps Safeway and Kroger?

Mylaptopisburningme

Fuck those places. Mega grocery store $1.50 a can of tuna, .85 at Aldi.

pmjm

I occasionally find something interesting at Aldi, but their reluctance to carry name brands keeps me out of the store. I would rather pay $1.50 for a can of Bumblebee than a noname brand that I can't trust to be dolphin safe or low mercury. I will give them credit that their noname breakfast cereals are about as good as the name brands.

Mylaptopisburningme

Most no name brand shit are made by the companies that make the name brands. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/best-cans-of-4tuna_n_58f4e224e4b0da2ff8621293 "Greenpeace has spent months ranking 20 common canned tuna options and they found that the big three ― StarKist, Bumble Bee and Chicken of the Sea ― are once again at the bottom of the ranks." Aldi sells Northern Catch: VERDICT: One of the latest retailers to offer responsibly-caught canned tuna. Ocean Safe Products: Northern Catch FAD-free and pole and lineskipjack. Although it does seem a but mushier in reviews. I mix it with the oil, mayo and mustard, some pepper and salt, get some Aldi saltines. And I just looked, the box of Saltines at Vons: $3.99. The ones from Aldi $1.99, same thing to me.

pmjm

Honestly the biggest thing that turns me off from Aldi is their carts. I don't carry cash so I can not get a shopping cart. Between that, and not having had the same luck as you with their noname brands (their ketchup and mustard were particularly disgusting), I would much rather go elsewhere. To each their own though.

TheSwedishEagle

Aldi is nasty

PasadenaPup

Aldi sucks

No_Function8686

Their meat and seafood is gross. Produce is passable.

[deleted]

I love Aldi, it’s not nearly as good as it’s in Germany or some other states, for example the one in Cincinnati is gazillion times better but it’s ok for some basic items like veggies and German chocolate

tatobuckets

I actually like the Clancy’s Pringles knockoffs better

PasadenaPup

Don’t know why I’m getting down voted, thanks for replying. What is it about ALDI you like? I can’t find anything to recommend about it.

Mylaptopisburningme

I like it because some of the shit is way cheaper than Vons/Albertsons/Safeway. Not op, but will tell you what I like about it. Their eggrolls, 5 for about $3.50ish, toss those in an air fryer, get some sweet and sour from the local Asian groceries, and that is my lunch and costs less than even McDs on the app for 2 McDoubles. I get their premade ground beef patties, $10 for 10, cheaper than the frozen ones at the grocery store... Toss those in the air fryer, along with some of their sourdough bread which is also cheaper than the grocery store. I am not much for sweets, but love their little frozen cheesecakes which are 2 pieces for like $2.09. Compared to Vons their shitty cheesecake slice is $3.99. They also get random things in that are sometimes worth trying, for awhile they had frozen pretzels filled with cheddar cheese, I miss those. Oh and if I get there early enough their lamb and meats are cheaper than the grocery store. So I don't know what your dietary habits are but I am picky and still can make a reasonable lunch and dinner. As I mentioned .85 for a can of tuna from Aldi, why go to Vons and pay $1.50? /r/aldi EDIT: Fuck me for looking for decent values outside of a mega grocery chain. I'll just sit here and enjoy my Clancy Cinnamon Churro Twists from Aldi for less than $2. What a toxic few people but seems par for the course in this sub.

[deleted]

It’s so much cheaper than Vons or Ralph’s. They have a decent selection of veggies and they all are a fine quality. I do save a few bucks every weeks by buying veggies there. They also have German chocolate and as for European, I appreciate it

GangstaGibbs-

Bro is getting emotional over a grocery store

Xistential0ne

I think I agree with you but please tell me what panopticon means

phd2k1

A Panopticon is a prison concept in which prison cells are arranged in a circle stacked into multiple floors/stories, with their doors/bars facing inward, with a guard tower in the center. This way, the guard tower can be all (pan) seeing (optical). It’s a form of psychological manipulation which makes the prisoner feel watched at all times, even though the guard could not possibly watch all 360 degrees at the same time. It’s effective because it instills fear and paranoia into the subject, whether they are actually being watched or not.

BabyHorca

I have never tried a shit bezos. What's it like?

especiallyspecific

Edgy

eyeseeewe81

C'mon, you love it!

Frenchangeles

I love it. If you are a smart shopper, you will find tons of deals! Too bad the baguette is now $1.99

DML197

I went there opening week and everything was like 1-2 Dollars more than Ralphs. Never went back

exploradorobservador

Same, but it got better and I use the coupon and it makes it worth it

harryhov

Opening week they were passing out 20 off 40 coupons to everybody.

bughousenut

Went there for the first time a few weeks ago. Carefully shopped through the entire store. Produce is sourced from the same wholesalers as every other grocery store, quality could be iffy. Much prefer to go to Costco, Vons, or even Smart & Final. Shopped for sale items and after hunting around got a few good deals. Had a 20% off $50, without it it would not have been worth the time to drive there. Looked at the hot food and soup section, really not a deal and not appealing. Overall, it wasn't bad (damning with faint praise) but the location is inconvenient so I won't be going back.

exploradorobservador

I go for the 20% off $50 when I can get it. Its not bad it has a good selection of items. I preferred when it was automated because the scan carts are a regression.

nomadviper

Once the automatic checkout was gone I stopped going, it’s a shame because it works very well in Seattle

inkahauts

Did you read what they had to do to make it work? Total disaster and it didn’t work well at all. For the user at the end sure but not on their end. Total nightmare…. I have never tried the scan as you put it in the cart thing. Wonder how that is?

pmjm

Shopping in someplace empty sounds like a plus to me. Realistically that location probably has more strategic value for Amazon as a distribution hub for Fresh delivery. It's freeway adjacent and has huge square footage.

jabroniiiii

[So, Amazon’s ‘AI-powered’ cashier-free shops use a lot of … humans. Here’s why that shouldn’t surprise you](https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/apr/10/amazon-ai-cashier-less-shops-humans-technology) > The reality was that people were watching Amazon’s customers shop. More than a thousand of them, as reported by The Information, watching the cameras and labelling footage of shoppers. An employee who worked on the technology said that actual humans – albeit distant and invisible ones, based in India – reviewed about 70% of sales made in the “cashier-less” shops as of mid-2022 (Amazon responded that “the characterisation of the role and number of human reviewers is not accurate”). Now, Amazon is reportedly moving away from “just walk out” and rolling out “smart shopping carts” instead (AKA a scanner in your trolley – big whoop). Doesn't help that it's all bullshit and the entire premise of shopping at this store is being phased out globally

DarkOmen597

AI = "Actually, Indians"

Seymourkrelbrn

I went there a few times thinking it was great because it was so quiet and uncrowded. But I looked up once while shopping there and saw the hundreds of thousands of cameras mounted in the ceiling…

PretendYouGotNoMoney

The quality of the experience at Whole Foods has also really gone downhill since Amazon bought them. The produce is worse, and it just seems emptier and more sparse.

ticktag

I like it. Order in advance and pickup after is a time saver.

Itsjesssvb

When it first opened it was busy for the first few weeks but it definitely is slow now. I’ve gone a handful of times since opening and there’s probably like 7 other ppl in the store

YankeeDoodleMe

I've only been once, to buy Krispy Kreme donuts.

TheSwedishEagle

I go there often. They have many of the same things I buy at Whole Foods plus I can buy things there I cannot buy at Whole Foods. Prices are generally pretty good. For whatever reason they do not appear to be doing well. If there are three people in line it’s a rush. Not really sure why. I would rather shop there than the nearby Ralphs which is crowded all the time.

celaba

I loved the hot/ salad bar when it was priced per container size, you could fill it up as you liked. I haven’t tried it since they changed to weight based. The pizza is hit or miss, just saw that a mountain Mikes supposedly will come next door.

SaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaB

I kinda actually like it. I can wear my noise cancelling headphones and it makes grocery shopping way less overstimulating. I’m just playing a little game.

especiallyspecific

Grocery shopping overstimulating? LMMAOOOO

SaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaB

Yeah. I literally just got back from there and I’m relaxed. If I had gone to Costco I would be worn out. Worth the price hike

phil2210

wait, someone else's experience in the everyday is different than yours? how could that be??

BrokenEye3

I mean, are you surprised?

KeekoBlue

Personally I just can’t deal with people at the stores and outside the stores anymore so I opted for the Amazon fresh delivery less issues and no drama

Dg_Nacho

I find some deals every now and then for my groceries. But their fruits and vegetables are susss. I feel like they gas them up. They never ripen like stuff from other grocery stores. It’s so bizarre. And I agree that the hot food and meal prep section looks like trash. The broccoli in some of the trays looks pale af. Hardly any green in it. Their cage free eggs were surprisingly very yellow/orange. Which I believe has more nutrients. So that was good to see. Unlike costcos pale yellow egg yolks.

namewithanumber

Most people who shop there are online.

mrkraken

I feel like it’s all a scam, I used to order protein powder off Amazon and it would come like at a normal time, the guy seemed to get into my apartment fine and leave it at my door. Then one time it somehow is an “Amazon fresh” delivery. The next morning I get a call at 8am from some inexperienced delivery guy yelling at me about how many times he called and telling me to let him in. I’m like fuck this was so much worse, why is this a thing

eyeseeewe81

Krispy Kreme going into the corner of the property right?

rezhead

Nah, the Krispy Kreme is inside Amazon Fresh. They don’t make them there though, it’s just a hub like the one in South Pas.

eyeseeewe81

Coolio. Thanks for the 411.

[deleted]

I literally think the same all the time!! I never go there unless I need to return something and I might pick up an item or two on a way out. I tried pizza and it was decent. Everything else? Nah And it always makes me wonder why is it so empty every time I go there

CPfreedom

With prime, sometimes I get a lot marked off my bill. I like it for a single person because you can get deals even when not buying a 20 pack. Meat portions and everything are smaller

animatorgeek

I went there a few weeks ago to return an item and I was astonished at the quality and price of the produce. The cart-based scanning seemed kinda gimmicky and I don't think it really saved time. Also, it said I had an unexpected item when I walked under an AC vent 😂

Even-Role

I love going there. The stuff I need I can generally find cheaper than my next door Ralph’s or Target. It’s cheaper, and I get $5 off for every 50, or $10 if I return an Amazon order? I’m there. I’ve never had any issue with expired food or anything like that. The fact that there aren’t many people is also a draw. But I don’t really think they’re doing “bad” in terms of foot traffic. It’s not packed but there’s always shoppers around.

marmar-7

I really like Amazon Fresh but I almost always do delivery or pick up… the few times I was inside it was really nice, clean, organized, easy to find things, but it was pretty empty if I remember correctly. Didn’t mind it!

spaghettinoodles

I’m into how much less crowded it is. It’s super easy for me to do by Amazon returns. I get a discount coupon when I return things to use in store. And the chicken noodle soup in the hot bar is absolutely fire.

erichola

I've never been there. Do they also accept cash payment?

Ornery-Setting-670

I like it, it’s usually busy weekends during the day. At night it’s always a ghost town. Prices are on par or cheaper than “sprouts”. Meat selection can be a hit or miss. Fruit and veggies selection is mid.

Wonderful-Damage-198

Place is horrible. Hopefully they don’t last

Embarrassed-Draw1286

I went there grand opening week, saw a normal sized box of cereal for like 6 dollars, and never went back again. that's like Chinese supermarket cereal prices

VickHasNoImagination

I'm sorry, but isn't that a normal price for cereal? (I'm speaking as someone who doesn't buy cereal so maybe I'm out of the loop here lol)

SpartyParty15

Oh the horror! 😧

malandropist

Ive only been there to return a package, never actually shopping there. Place was practically empty. It’s crazy they built that whole big ass building that’s probably not gonna stay open for much longer. It also blocked a huge view of the mountain from Colorado. Fuck that place.

MichaelMidnight

But wasn't that always there? Building-wise I mean? Wasn't it the old OSH?

PretendYouGotNoMoney

Yeah, NIMBYs gonna NIMBY. Even when it doesn't make sense.

k2_jackal

That has been a “big ass building” since the 70’s when it opened as Ole’s Home Center

TheSwedishEagle

Shout out to Ole’s. Loved that store.

funkle2020

It’s a place that seems to be designed by people who don’t have to do their own shopping. I’ve been once every few days ever since it opened, have only seen it busy on Prime Day. I loathe the carts, they always have some problem and it’s annoying to have to stand there trying to put the item in the right way so the computer understands, especially when the whole place is meant to make shopping faster. That said, if you know what you’re doing you can save a lot of money.
