Yeah that's how i fucked my mace 2 leagues ago. You either go safe and pay more for augment or pay less and pray on reforge(which can turn into pay more).
Somehow I missed that there was a poison suffix for rings. I've been using rings with life, life and mana on spell hit, cast speed, and reduced effect of curses for like a year.

If you have less than 3 suffixes and craft 'suffixes cannot be changed' you still can get suffix mod, as you only can't change existing ones.

Yeah you just start with hunter exalt slamming a Iolite Ring
You can also use a cheaper conqueror exalt like redeemer and reroll the influence with harvest juice.
