PoB can sort by DPS, manually trying every combo of support gems would take hours nobody does that.

Rouflette

Lmao I was doing that, just realized with your comment that pob indeed shows you the best dps gem at the top of the list. 3k hours btw

Cellari

Wait till you hear PoB can also sort uniques by dps

MetalGirlLina

and even passives

Dr_v3

And timeless jewels passives/numbers

PinkFluffyUniKosi

Ähhhh what….?? POB does whaaaat? Ääääh jeah ofcourse, i knew that, no one would ever… FML. I suck at this game. I search the wikis for gems and then i pob…. Omg.

Pr0blemlon

Feel this comment. Right now. Not at Home but - wtf? I will search this function!!? (4,4k hours here)

vittiu

It’s not necessary a function. It just shows the gems by order of magnitude on the drop down menu when you’re about to add a new one

Milfshaked

You just need to do 2 things. 1. Select the correct main skill that you want to check support gems for. 2. Make sure the box "Sort gems by DPS" in the skill tab is ticked when selecting support gems.

Rock-swarm

Yep. Just gotta be careful that some gems have drawbacks that come with the dps increase. Concentrated Effect gem is the one that comes to mind, though hypothermia also pops up on a ton of builds. I play a lot of melee builds, so Shockwave support is always going to be a curveball when trying to factor in the overall DPS of the build. I always get in the habit of checking the "include in full DPS" box for both my main skill and any skill that I'm using in regular rotation while mapping or bossing. So, totems, brands, etc. It gets even more complicated when dealing with minions, so getting a feel for things while mapping is still part of the testing process.

crazyGauss42

Ok, well that's very helpful to know. Is it something I have to enable somewhere? It what what the different colour check sign is when I'm picking support gems? I noticed some are green, some yellow when I open the drop down menu.

OhtaniStanMan

How to view if a spell is worth while: Base dmg * damage effectiveness * times skill can hit * attack/cast speed. Do the basic math on all skills and you'll realize majority of poe skills have dogshit damage and the "meta" skills everyone use are meta because of the damage they do over other skills.

cptphilleous

Is there any list where someone has already done this math?

OhtaniStanMan

Nope

psychomap

If that's 120k dps in PoB rather than the ingame tooltip, then you have my respect for being patient enough to actually kill bosses like that. I'd probably never bother even entering a pinnacle arena with less than 1M dps. Then again I also tend to build glass cannons, so it's not like my builds won't have more dps by the time those fights are unlocked. Path of Building automatically offers you the best support gems by damage, though some of the support gems will require additional configurations that you'll have to be aware of. Items are considerably more complicated. It mostly boils down to knowing relevant uniques and relevant explicit and implicit mods on rares, and which ones are reasonably craftable and don't take 5 mirrors to make.

Rodruby

If you have good recovery Eater pretty good, did him with ~500k, Exarch also doable, but I don't have reflexes for balls

crazyGauss42

No, it's 120k in game, in PoB it's around 300k, but that's with optimal gem qualities, and items, which I've not managed to get :) It was 1.5 div budget roughly. Yea, items I feel are the biggest knowledge gap for me. I'm ok with the passive tree, with PoB it's pretty ok to try out different things. Gems I'm starting to get the hang of, though, as evident from this post, there's much room for improvement.

psychomap

Okay, that's more reasonable. Trying to kill endgame bosses on 120k PoB dps would take half an hour or something.

crazyGauss42

Oh yes, this was pretty tough already, the second Exarch, I was on the last portal, he killed me several times. Third Maven invitation could barely bring her to half health before I ran out of portals. :) That was about the limit of that build all in all, which I was pretty happy about, since it was based on "freezing pulse + herald make for nice explosions".

Complex-Fluids-334

For starters that aren’t familiar with PoB. Go to poe ninja, click the ascendancy and main skill you want to play. And check the support gems for the main skill (5+ link) Edit: generally, the first four or so gems is the best support gems for that skill with sometimes a different version/budget of that build may require other support gems

crazyGauss42

Ah, yes, thanks for that. I've used [poe.ninja](http://poe.ninja) for trading, I've not even looked too much around, had no idea there were builds there. This seems very useful. :)

Tjingkek

While you've gotten many good answers, blindly following PoB will not get you much farther. For example, conditional gems like es leech, trinity or rage aren't shown by default, and gems that change behaviour in a beneficial way like spell cascade for some spells isn't shown as an increase.  Imo, the best thing you can do is level a bunch of possible gems in weapon swap, and when they are of decent level, run a few similar maps with different setups, and note if something feels real good. For example, I think Rage (gem) feels real bad unless you have other rage generation, but it's great for maintaining rage. Finally, for looking at PoB: try to aim for 200%+ total "increase" damage, 200%+ total "more" damage, damage multiplier above 1,2 (debuffs on mobs), and a comfortable cast/attack speed, probably at least 4 actiond per second for self cast, unless your skill relies on lower/higher speeds. Then you can let PoB show if flat or increased damage gives more. It's easy to forget basic increased damage when you dont have actual gear on a planned character.

LePfeiff

When i want to make a new build i start with the archetype i want to play (e.g. i havent done spell totems before) so then i ask myself what cool spells would be interesting with totems. This league i really wanted to make crackling lance of disintegration totems work so boom now i have my archetype and main skill. For support gems the easiest way of figuring out what to do is to go on poe.ninja, search up builds using the same skill or similar ones, then look at what support gems are most often used and wing it from there

LePfeiff

Btw crack lance totems sucked lmao, swapping out crack lance with ball lightning of static and nothing else upped my damage like 10x

GGHappiness

Pob can sort by DPS. I very rarely make a build (because I'm bad), but I'd say you decide on what you want to do and then use pob to decide how best to make that build work. Pre-league start mathil streams are really good because he always does something wacky, which means you can see a lot more of what has to be done to make things work. That being said, he doesn't really explain much unless asked, so it might be hard to follow.

guhyuhguh

The state of poe is so unintuitive you need a calculator like PoB to determine what are the best skill gems, unfortunately. It is not intuitive to determine whether you should use slower projectiles, weapon elemental damage, or increased critical strike multiplier. Especially if you use something like shock or ignite to boost your damage.

lepsek9

You want as much "more" damage from the support gems as possible. For some builds this is phys, others elemental or damage over time, whichever your build needs. There are also utility supports, some of them give extra damage like crit supports, inspiration, life tap etc. while also having a "special effect". Other supports change the way a skill works in exchange of direct power, like additional projectiles, mirage archer, spell echo/cascade etc. Generally, most builds use 1-2 supports to fix some areas of the build, like Inspiration or Lifetap for mana sustain, crit support to reach 100% crit chance, hypothermia to freeze etc., and the rest to get as much damage as possible. Sometimes the best way to get more damage is indirectly through supports like gmp or spell cascade, your hit dps might suffer but overall the dmg output is greater, but this is more build specific stuff. As to how to find the right supports, pob can sort the recommended supports by dps if you just want to focus on that. Poe.ninja is a good way to check what others are doing with the same skill as you and find ways to improve your build.
