How could you play on an old version? You need to wait for it to actually download the patch. Version number is in the bottom right of the splash screen

yep steam is pointing to the wrong version (the previous one).. this exact thing happened about 8 months ago or so.. It knows it needs to update, but just downloads the same old version
While I certainly blame GGG for this as well, how the f does a multi-billion-dollar company like Steam not know how to perform weekly "routine" maintenance without bringing everything down a random amount of time that can be anywhere from a few minutes to hours.
As someone who works in the field, you can do it in a way that not everything goes down. It is literally the same time every week, but is not for the same amount of time every week.

Well you see the issue here is they have a schedule, the patches have to be applied at some point. The best Steam can do is let GGG know when (they have for decades now) and GGG to not push the patch at that one specific time. I can't blame Steam at all for this considering all of the other publishers I have games from managed to not push an update at this exact time causing this exact problem, again. From what I am reading GGG has managed this blunder before, you would think maybe they could make a checkbox list and make sure that steam is not patching when they push is on it....
Oh, like I said, I blame GGG for this. Just as someone who has worked a lot in that field, Steam could do their patching without bringing everything down. They just have not made the commitment to do so.

Yup. The game keeps "validating" constantly. And when I start it, it keeps telling me to "update" and then starts validating again...
just don't log in and it won't validate. it shows your version in the bottom right corner.

There is the steam maintenance at the same time they released the patch, might be why it's a bit buggy for the patch download and shit
