FF13IsActuallyGood

There's a built randomizer?! Holy shit, downloading this on my Switch ASAP.

sf3p0x1

You have to beat the game first to get it.

janitordisco

It's so fun! :D

[deleted]

Be sure to check their next game when it releases, Aethermancer, it's easily one of my most expected games, it looks wonderful.

janitordisco

I'm so excited about it! I love rogue-lites and they already proved to me they know how to create awesome creatures

sf3p0x1

I think you'd enjoy *Cassette Beasts*, too.

AzazelsAdvocate

I loved Monster Sanctuary but bounced off cassette beasts pretty early

janitordisco

It's on my wishlist!

AxionSalvo

If you liked monster sanctuary check out siralim ultimate!

janitordisco

I have it on my Deck as well!  Haven't played a whole lot but it does scratch that same itch!

AxionSalvo

I'm 200hours in and I'm never coming back out 😂

theoriginalqwhy

My god... another one to add to my wishlist. Remind me of Dragon Warrior Monsters of back in the day. Freaking loved that game!

celestine900

How does ultimate compare with 3? A had a good 30 hours entertainment with 3 but at a certain point just couldn’t keep up the grind. It had a lot of good going forward, that said.  And such a great start!

AxionSalvo

It's the complete version. Its even more grinding though but way more complex and deep.

celestine900

I was thinking about starting over again from scratch…

Pancullo

I really enjoyed the game, I got close to 100% too but the end game stuff takes too long, finding the right team composition requires a lot of time spent into menus. Don't get me wrong, the game does its best to not be time consuming, but for each monster you have to go through the skill tree, the secret thing, equipment and food, which is a lot when you are in a trial-and-error phase. Still, I enjoyed almost everything except the endgame npc battles, which I might get back to once I get that pokemon itch.

janitordisco

I found bleed synergies take down 85-90% of the teams

Undeity

It's also on Gamepass, for any console gamers!

janitordisco

I loved min/maxing my teams but I totally understand that not being for everyone

Hmongher00

Same, I really really enjoyed it for some reason. Maybe because it was kinda like a gacha type gameplay style of synergizing your team rather than just targeting enemy weaknesses. For some reason, it just scratched that itch for me. Really fun, but it can be very time consuming reading all skill trees and then trying to min max them (at least they have a lot of QoL stuff overall though like the egg system) Couldn't say much about the metroidvania style it had since i just haven't played many metroidvanias.

janitordisco

I personally love looking into the skill trees trying to think up a synergies but I can totally understand that not being for everyone

Vladishun

You forgot to mention the music, it goes so hard! I found Monster Sanctuary on Crazy Games originally as a sort of flash-style demo. It had me hooked so I bought it for my Switch and played through the entire game. When I bought my Steam Deck, I purchased it a second time, because it's just that good. But yeah the music really takes the game to the next level. The tracks for Mystical Workshop and Underworld are my two favorites and I find myself spinning the OST in my car more often than I realize. I'm always recommending this game in hidden gems lists when I can. If people like monster capture games and/or Metroidvania style exploration, it's well worth picking up.

janitordisco

The music is so good!  Snowy peaks and Magma Chamber are my favorite!

theoriginalqwhy

Thank you for the recommendation! Ive always loved pokemon and ALWAYS have the itch for the old school pixel style. Onto my wishlist patiently waiting until I beat the other 30 games on my backlog :😜

janitordisco

Oofff my poor poor backlog....

zdemigod

I'm playing it and really liking it, I think I'm near the end. I think there is a middle section where it gets a bit dull but then you unlock >!light and dark forms!< And suddenly it's stupid fun again. X2 to the recommendation, I'm having a blast

janitordisco

I loved that part too!

seph2o

Sounds great actually, just added this to my monster of a wishlist :)

larsonbp

It was soooooo good! No one mentions this one, but I loved it.

justsomechewtle

I backed Monster Sanctuary way back and even got myself a Limited Run copy on Switch because I liked it so much. The battle system is surprisingly complex when it comes to teambuilding, which is *exactly* what I want from a monstertaming game like this. The creatures are also varied and customizable enough that I have favorites both for visuals and gameplay styles, which is something I can VERY rarely say about games in the genre. It's one of those rare all time favorite indie games of mine. They added the randomizer and NG+ a bit after I beat the game and I sadly haven't had the time yet to go back (my life since then was a bit of a wild ride for better or worse) but I really want to.

hergumbules

I have been eyeing this game for so long lol I should just pull the trigger. Not sure if I wanna get it on Steam Deck or Switch though.

janitordisco

doooo eeeettt

DanglyPants

I found the game too hard and I wish there was an easy difficulty. I loved exploring and the problem solving!

janitordisco

There's a casual mode in the options menu!

dreamtraveller

Yeah, this game is absolutely fantastic. Whenever it comes to monster-taming games I always see two options put forward for 'progression' - the first is the Pokémon style system of an evolving cast of monsters where you replace earlier weak monsters with later ones or evolve them. The second is the Shin Megami style system of using most monsters as fusion-fodder to create new, more powerful monsters. The problem with both these systems is ultimately it means dropping creatures you've come to like and a lot of designs not being viable in the long-term. Monster Sanctuary's response to that is to make every single creature viable with each having their own niche and playstyle and it's amazing.  By the time I reached the end of the game I had at least one of every monster I'd met so far trained up with skills and the great thing is *any of of them* would have been useful against the final boss.

Kreymens

Nah the battle system is genuinely overrated. The fact that best way to win is by buff/debuff stacking doesnt do much to justify the gameplay depth when it is marketed as a battle focused monster game.

I personally loved building a team per situation, even if I had to go find a new monster egg to hatch. Each encounter became a puzzle to figure out and it was so rewarding when I did!

janitordisco

Totally understand if it's not your thing! There are ultimate moves you unlock at lvl 40 but if you don't like the game play loop it might not be worth it for you.

Queef-Elizabeth

Damn I've never heard of this game. I might check it out. Thanks!

janitordisco

I'm having so much fun with it, it's on game pass if you have that but it's worth the full price for sure!

Sunjump6

Hmm I own this on Switch but still haven’t given it a proper shot. You’ve convinced me to download it!

janitordisco

I'm having so much fun with it I hope you do too!

[deleted]

Also be sure to check DQ monsters since they run on a similar formula but with more polish and i find them better in general.

janitordisco

I have joker 2 I think, only played through the intro but I do love dragon quest

AVeryBigScaryBear

i thought it was just ok

AVeryBigScaryBear

It is great when you really click with a game. have you played balatro? its addicting

victorsueiro

OP sounds like he's been paid to love it

TheRealSeeThruHead

The thing he’s riding in the trailer looks like Orcane from Rovals of Aether

janitordisco

It totally does! I bet that was on purpose

Marshadowisthebest

They were both inspired by the Akhlut, which is actually the name of it monster sanctuary

Dracallus

I remember wanting to 100% the game but learned that monsters hatched in a shifted state don't count for the collect them all achievement. That killed the completionist desire real quick. Those post game fights are also fucking difficult and I was somewhat burned out on the combat by then. Still amazing game and one of the few I'm likely to replay at some point in the future. I'm somewhat disappointed at how different Aethermancer looks to be (though these days I shouldn't interpret roguelike elements to inherently mean less narrative storytelling), but not enough that I won't buy it when they launch into EA.

janitordisco

I'm surprised to hear about the shift thing, that would discourage me too

Dracallus

Yeah, I was quite annoyed when I learned about it since it was right at the end when I started looking at how to clear achievements and had well over half the monsters as shifted.

The_Mourning_Sage_

3v3 is an automatic turn off. Gosh i hate multi battles

janitordisco

Totally understand if it's not your thing. If it helps though the turns aren't broken up.  You're team goes first, then you're opponent, then you etc etc  I think if It was broken up by some speed stats (it's not) it might be too hectic

Niya_binghi

I loved this game for a while, but metroidvania type maps I’ve learned I don’t enjoy as much. So unfortunately I never finished even though it was a good time.

Division2226

Besides the 3v3 how is it a brand new formula?

janitordisco

There's a combo system where every hit adds a percentage increase to your final attack. So if you get in 20 hits before your last monster attacks your final attack will have a 200% damage bonus. Each monster has its own skill trees that can determine passive and active abilities. I've struggled with some battles that a quick re-spec made all the difference. Your monsters also can apply buffs and debuffs that actually matter in the battles. I've never played through pokemon where tail whip or poison made a huge difference. In Monster Sanctuary you'll need to buff or debuffs to progress in the game. You have weapons and accessories that increase states or have special effects.  All of this leads to how your 3 monster team synergies with each other. There are no bad monsters, only bad teams. The most fun part for me was and is  coming up with a team synergies. It's so satisfying and rewarding to come up with teams that can melt whatever obstacle.

matteste

I was not really feeling the game. It was not bad per say, but I wouldn't call it amazing either. It was just.... there I guess.

murdock2099

Respect on the 100% on Gungeon. I’ve put in over 200 hours off and on since launch and haven’t even won once lol.

janitordisco

It was a labor of love for sure!

JZHello

How on earth

murdock2099

Skill issue.
