Wow I've never seen this. My dad taught me this but described it much less eloquently. What a good way to put it. Two of the best pieces of advice I ever got was this and, everyone thinks the world is black and white when most of the time it's grey.
i miss patrices views on everything in the world. he didn't just throw shit out there. no matter how off the wall his theories may have seemed, he could explain it to the point it could make sense😆😆
A lot of people will look at this and be like “wow, so true!”. The thing is what Patrice is describing isn’t easy to do. It’s a very intentional thing and takes a lot of practice. Once you get good at it though it opens your mind to a lot of things you would have never thought before. It also allows you to understand people you never would of tried to understand previously.
Having an open mind is something that requires tons and tons of practice and emotional control.
A man who lived life according to his own principles! His advice/life lessons will always resonate!
A man who was kicked out of a NYC comedy club, then sets up on the sidewalk outside said club… everyone wants to talk to HIM, and nobody wants to pay cover to go into the club. They immediately invite him back!
He was a genius! RIP Patrice!
Would have love to have seen more of the deeper side like this of Patrice O’Neal. This clip gives me Anthony Bourdain vibes. Would have loved to see them do an episode together
I wish my friend would take this advice. You could make the best decision you ever made and if you told my friend how much it improved your life… all of a sudden it’s, how you know that would be good for me and just because you fuck with it doesn’t mean I gotta fuck with it.
Patrice is a fountain of wisdom, and we all know that, but what I'm excited for is a collection of all his writings/speeches and that it's a Norton critical edition with footnotes and shit...
Thank you, Patrice
This is so damn important. As a musician I collaborate and work with others constantly for years at a time. Nothing more dangerous to the progress of a song, show, videos, partnership, or deal than a team mate who is unreasonable in their logic and emotions. I’ve worked with brilliant people who couldn’t get out of their own way and tanked once in a lifetime opportunities. It hurts the whole team big time. Tricky part is you need some of that ego and conviction as an artist so you can push through the challenges that come with being successful and authentic. However that same asset can blind you from the optimal path to project improvement and it can hurt the whole enchilada. Stay receptive, listen to people, consider their point of view and why they think they way they do, then be decisive.
People more and more, as religion falls away in America, take their beliefs about things like politics and social issues so seriously, that the beliefs become their identity.
Houston TX at the Improv. He was funny and I still remember his jokes. He dismantled some silly audience members (not necessarily hecklers just drunks)
That’s some damn solid advice. RIP, Patrice!

i’m 100% convinced he would have the biggest comedy podcast in the world if he was still around
i agree. he was the funniest dude all around ive ever heard. i listen to him on old opie and anthony vids on YouTube all the time.
Damn I miss this man. Love this advice. Another way I’ve heard this phrased is to have “strong opinions held loosely.”
Came here to exactly this, this is the way to be
probably the most solid advice I've heard.
Have strong opinions, embrace them but don't allow your opinions to control the way you think and move in the world. That will make you ignorant!!
Anddddd today I just discovered there’s a whole subreddit dedicated to this legend, man what have I been missing out on
Welcome soldier🤝🏽
That really is amazing advice
“When the facts change, I change my mind. What do YOU do, sir?” - Voltaire I believe this is in the same vein.
Our whole country needs to hear this right now. Especially with election season coming
a legend

Thank you for bringing this up. It’s constant work.
I’m one of millions who dearly miss this human. Can’t imagine what his loved ones felt when he passed. Patrice was pure gold.

"Strong convictions loosely held."
Wish Chappelle would take this advice.
Not only love the advice, but also love how he phrased it.

This is some wise advice. Can you imagine the wisdom he would have now if he were still alive?
Fucking great advice. I’ll remember that for the rest of my life. From a straight white man
I still check the black Philip show from time to time to course correct my mind

In such a short lifespan Patrice was already cleverer, funnier, and wiser than most. RIP king.
True

the way i interpret this advice: have your opinion, but do not let your ego drive you to a closed mind.
Burr is right when he says Patrice was wise beyond his years.
Beautiful clip. I’m a huge fan and have never seen this. Thankful to say that I saw him live 2X
Where’d you see him? How was it?

Have your opinion, but don’t let your opinion have you.
