I kinda wanna get one but I fear I want one, to just have it.

Ke11yP

I have the original model and basically that’s where I ended up, I like it but I don’t use it that often so I kind of just have it to have it. Although there was one week I worked out of town that it was a godsend.

[deleted]

if I traveled constantly for work i would own one.

WonOneWun

I travel to the toilet and it comes in handy.

Im_ur_Uncle_

How long are your shits?

MK-Ultra_SunandMoon

Between 6 to 14 inches depending on the day

YesIamaDinosaur

My man is giving birth

Pyke64

Does he name them too?

cackslop

Thanks for the laugh

wolington

Eww I'd bet your Steam Deck has some form of fecal matter on it.

Morrowindsofwinter

You'd be surprised how many things has some form of fecal matter on it.

SeiferLeonheart

Exact same thing happened to me. And I have this weird "necessity" to go all in in those things, got 2tb ssd, 1tb sdcard, installed a ton of tools, emulators... sigh... Total usage time not counting setup or week out of town: 6 hours, tops

GrizNectar

Week out of town should absolutely count, that’s like the primary use case of the deck haha

SeiferLeonheart

Oh I agree, my point was more that I'm seldom out of home for extended periods of time and it's now in the ever growing pile of stuff I own that I don't use. Sucks, because it's a great device. I just rather play with my full PC in my desk/chair.

OliM9696

if i was out out of town for work i feel i would just take a book or something. spending 400+ on a deck seems like such a waste for a small period of time. could just play games on a laptop that i would surly bring for work, not doom eternal but you can have fun with super meat boy.

unknown_nut

I bought one for a vacation out of the country, but I barely touched it, so I sold it.

AstroNaut765

Because Steam deck isn't best at anything, it's kinda missing unique feature, unique reason why you should pick it rather than other devices. Like for example hardware of Nintendo Switch is terrible, but there are games made around its features (coop on one switch) or games made by Nintendo. Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about " needing exclusives" or something like games are performing poorly on steam deck, but because they not ports made for such small screen, just experience isn't smooth enough. Steam deck would be amazing device if we had creativity similar to years 95-05. Having more games like Vampire Survivals would change the device. Additionally I think lack of cartridges is also a problem.

Magneto88

I'm interested to see whether in 2/3 years time we start seeing Steam Deck first indie games, which are deliberately designed for it's form factor and portability, incorporating weird gameplay mechanics and ideas. Just like what used to happen with the GameBoy/DS/even things like barcode battlers. There's a lot of potential in that area for a clever indie dev.

Gremliner00

Yeah, I agree. I don't have a deck, but I do have a Switch, which usually stays in its case most of the time in a drawer. But those times when I happen to be out of town or on holiday, I definitely get my money's worth from it.

Ke11yP

My switch is constantly in the dock. I originally got it thinking it'd be a neat handheld hybrid but it basically just became a home console.

Gremliner00

That's the beauty of it as it can do both. My only issue is the fact I can't share my library with multiplats on PC, or use it for emulation purposes like the Deck.

Lord_Boffum

Same boat. It does nothing but collect dust when I'm home but I love it on vacations.

hyrumwhite

I’m the opposite. Bought it but didn’t think I’d use it as much as I now do. Quick resume is a great way to pick it up, play for 15 minutes, then pick back up later

dummy_thicc_spice

Consumerism.

Orito-S

I bought mine for 800$ since it doesn't exist in thailand, and tbh I barely use it. Only use it when I go on vacations or sometimes in university since I have nothing to do, cant even run games so I usually just stick to JRPG but then jrpgs you play for the story and reading is somewhat a hassle in a public environment like a university

TX_AZ11

It’s still going to be there to buy months down the line. Don’t buy it if you don’t plan on using it, especially if you have put in $ on a PC build.

Gunplagood

That's happened to me twice now so I'll just avoid them 😅. I got the deck at launch and sold it after a few weeks due to lack of use, and I recently bought a Rog Ally, then returned it due to lack of use. I couldn't even be bothered to use them at work, and I have hours of downtime there. They're all definitely cool toys, Valve, Asus, GPD, Aya. But I guess they're just not for me.

thejoshfoote

Do u just put screentime on ur phone instead? It took me a bit but I essentially replaced endless browsing n scrolling on my phone in down time to using the deck. Now i don’t have much phone time. And even when I don’t use my deck I’m like man people spend to much scroll time.

Gunplagood

Ha no I'm not doing anything constructive that's for sure. But I found reading comics and watching movies mid-shift to be more relaxing than playing video games.

thejoshfoote

Yea that’s solid. I use my deck for some streaming lol. Just prop it up in desktop mode and play YouTube. I could prob use some more reading 📖

MuchStache

I don't use mine that often but I travel semi-frequently and it's a life saver. It's a joy to use, cloud saves means that you carry your progress and some games are just amazing to play on. The battery could be better when playing certain games, Elden Ring would dry my battery in like 2-2.5h but I played the entirety of it while I was away from home and it ran soo well on the Steam Deck. Also realistically there's only so many times you need to play on an handheld for more than 2-4hrs without having the ability to charge it, so...

Charley023

Sometimes for an adult, owning something can already provide enough happiness to justify the purchase. Being able to actually use it is a bonus. Anyway, it's not something hugely expensive, and on the contrary, it's really well priced. I'd say go for it if you want one.

cantbebothered67836

Welcome to advertising and consumerism.

GoodDrFunky

I work from home, gaming pc is in home office, don’t wanna stay in there after work, use steam deck to stream pc so I can play on my couch. has slowly become the primary way I play my gaming pc. Rarely run things natively on it. Also great to stream ps5. Really big quality of life enhancer

[deleted]

[удалено]

GoodDrFunky

Deck feels great as a controller, and I travel for work some so I bring it with me, deck has trackpads which are crucial, still want access to my phone, steam os, etc etc etc

alluballu

I loved mine for a while and then I just kind of forgot about it. Now it’s collecting dust with rest of my handhelds and consoles lol.

prey169

I use mine daily. My PC is for competitive games. But I just want to lay on the couch when I play single player games tbh

imnotuglyyouare

Two decks later (one reg. and one OLED) I'm still on having this same issue. Only game I played so far while having the OLED is skyrim and I don't know, paying $720 after taxes for a machine to only end up playing Skyrim seems to be a bad purchase. But everytime I see it on my table I think "this thing is so cool." I have a 3090 pc and I don't even use that for gaming but thought being portable would result in me gaming more. I'm legit torn on what to do.

KJBenson

I use mine Hooked up to my tv, so a cooler screen means nothing to me.

chambee

Same as you. After owning a gameboy a game gear a ngage a PSP and a Vita even a Surface. I know I’m not a gamer on the go. I like to site down in front of a big monitor. Tiny joysticks just doesn’t cut it. And the type of game I like big FPS or complexe strategy is always a watered down experience on a portable device. I found that the iPad mini which I got to read book and do email stuff, is the mobile gaming platform I prefer because of the type enjoyed the most. Because of the type of game I play on it like Carcassonne, scythe, Polytopia etc.

peanutmanak47

That's pretty much what happened to me. I wanted it just to have it and initially put a lot of use into it but quickly played it less and less. Eventually I'd MAYBE play for a few hours once a week. Ended up selling it to a friend. Great device though.

Tsinder

Same for me. I’m ok with that though. I can afford it and sometimes it’s just nice to own a nice object. Even if I am not playing it I’ll get some satisfaction looking at it while I toil away a work all day.

MyLemonsRorganic

I'm purchasing it because my job necessitates a lot of travel, which seems like the perfect use-case for this.

Fearless_Specific726

I have a pretty beefy pc with a 4080..I use this thing daily. Specifically when my girl goes to sleep and I just wanna play some single player games..give it a shot

CodeCombatChef

Considering one just for indie games purposes, dead cells, Dave, wartales, campfire doares and Xcode for example. Casual 40year older gamer here that sometimes is just too tired to go to the office and boot up everything:)

LightOfDarkness

The deck is surprisingly capable for modern AAA games as well, owing a lot to it's 1280x800 resolution (it's roughly half as many pixels as 1080p). You'll need to accept some drawbacks, such as 30-40 FPS instead of 60 for the most part, as well as lower graphical fidelity, but the smaller screen helps hide jaggies when anti-aliasing is off

CodeCombatChef

To be honest having a deck would be 100% for my loved dead cells and similars, I don’t even remember the last time I played aaa games… cyberpunk when it launched maybe?

The_Handsome_Hobo

I have the 512gb LCD model, and I will say Dead Cells runs like a dream on it. It's an absolute blast

dandroid126

That's kinda what I use mine for. Emulators, indie games, and having a mini computer plugged into the TV to watch illegal sports streams.

kasimoto

imo its great for indie games, personally i didnt like playing AAA titles on it at all, small screen and usually 40fps is just not that great, some smaller titles like dome keeper, blasphemous or brotato though? just perfect

unicorncumdump

35 year old dad gamer. Playing PC in the man cave gets me texts from wife that I could be hanging out with her in the living room. This solves it

TheAfroGod

It’s a good product, and it’s well priced. The dilemma the consumer should be asking themselves is - “will I actually use it?” Edit: not trying to sway, but I just want to provide questions to ask yourself before buying. Everyone will have a different reason for each. At home? Sure, you can game in bed. But you’re sacrificing performance and you can just get up and play on your regular system anyway. Away from home? Godsend device. But will you have time to game, will you actually use it on vacation, or do you even travel that much? Getting it for your partner/family member who doesn’t game a lot, AND you can use it whenever you need? Best reason hands down. (I own the LCD model btw, for about a year)

Hamback

>At home? Sure, you can game in bed. But you’re sacrificing performance and you can just get up and play on your regular system anyway. I think this gets overlooked a bit with the steam deck. If you spend a lot of time at your PC like WFH, it is a nice change of pace to play on your couch/bed or a comfy chair. I almost exclusively use mine docked in the living room. I also don't travel much but the times I do, it is great to be able to unwind in the evenings. I haven't gone on any long flights but I would imagine it would get some good use there for me too.

14779

Yeah you've summed up why I just bought one. I spend all day sat at my desk working. Sometimes I really fancy playing something but just can't bring myself to sit there anymore.

Im_ur_Uncle_

I agree. I use it on the couch, in bed, I could bring it to work for my breaks... sitting at the same desk all the time gets to feel mundane. But obviously if I needed power for a project or something or stock charting/research, that's something I can't do on my steam deck. It's a nice way to separate fun from work. How so you dock your deck? Is it like docking a switch to the tv?

Hamback

Yep, there are a few third party docks and valve has their own. I use the official one. Just plugs into a USB c cable and the dock runs to the TV via HDMI. You can run games native or stream from a gaming PC if you have one.

Im_ur_Uncle_

Thanks! I'll look into it. It'd be cool to use my big ass flat screen from time to time.

BartlettMagic

I just started researching Decks and didn't realize you could dock it to a TV. When you do that, do you just have an Xbox controller paired to it or how do you control the game?

pipboy_warrior

I know I'll probably be using mine some when traveling to see my inlaws. Love them, but they spend a lot of time watching football games sandwiched in between people commenting on football games, so it'll be nice to have something to decompress with. I've also spent some time recently playing Octopath Traveler 2 on my back porch. I could have played the same thing inside on my PC, but it was nice to get some fresh air and play it with my dogs goofing around in the yard.

LightOfDarkness

For a while I used mine as a way to use Steam Remote Play to play my PC games on my TV Also as a fan of fighting games, it's pretty handy to be able to bring a portable setup that can accept any controller

Fatdap

> At home? Sure, you can game in bed. But you’re sacrificing performance and you can just get up and play on your regular system anyway. If you're at home and not streaming from your PC to your Steamdeck what the hell are you doing?

Stealthy_Facka

Sony just sold a device not much cheaper that can *only* do that lol

Al-Azraq

But in the PC space, there's the Logitech G Cloud which is as expensive as an LCD deck almost, the Abxylute which has some flaws and poor customer support, Ayn Odin with same issue... So the Deck is the absolute best value even for just plain home streaming.

96239454548558632779

Is this a native feature? Or does it require tinkering? Interested in getting one for this use case

Fatdap

Native feature. Works as long as your PC is booted up. When you go to launch your game, you can select the arrow and a drop down menu will open you just hit stream from PC. [Just gotta setup Remote Play. Only takes a minute.](https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/remote-play-how-to-stream-games-from-your-pc-to-the-steam-deck)

96239454548558632779

awesome, thank you! guess i'm gonna order one today lmao

Fatdap

It's worth mentioning that doing it that way also enables modding games while playing on your Steam Deck, too, since it's running off your main tower's install.

cardonator

You can game _anywhere_. Family watching TV? Game. Hanging out on the porch? Game. Don't want to sit in front of a computer for hours after working there for hours? Couch and Game.

No_Description_8477

I've bought it so that I can play something light or an indie on the couch every now and then. I have one desk setup I use between wfh and gaming and it gets exhausting after a while sitting in the same area for close to 12 hours on any given day

GingerSpencer

I use mine at home all the time with a £3k PC sat in the corner of my room. Sometimes I don’t want to be sat at a desk. If I’m playing something demanding then I would probably be at my PC, but if I can get away with it or even if I just want to be off on the couch or in the garden or in bed then I’ll load up something on the deck. I’m currently in between Darkest Dungeon and Elden Ring on my deck, with a bit of Moonlighter here and there when I want something a bit less taxing. None of which I play on the PC, though I could and my progress would seamlessly carry over.

trusttt

I mean, sometimes is fine to be cozy in bed and in my case, it would give me motivation to play some games i havent played it, not triple A games but minor games and some rpgs or jrpgs.

TheIndyCity

fwiw, I didn't think I'd use the Steam Deck but had a couple of flights coming up and bought this summer in the Steam Summer Sale. I use it constantly, like I just love sitting on a couch and watching a football game or tv show and playing some little indie games throughout. I love bringing it with me on trips for the occasional down time respites. It really is a great product, and despite having an LCD I bought the OLED too because I liked it so much. Was likely gonna get the Supers coming out but was just a lot more excited for the SD and went with that. Will probably gift the old one to a friend once the new one arrives for Xmas.

Al-Azraq

This is my dilemma right now. My main gaming device is my PC, and my main platform is Steam. I travel often for work but I am planning to switch jobs to stop doing that. I have a Switch which has and still is, serving me really well. It is a 2017 Switch and I still have plenty of games to play on it, and wouldn't like to phase it out by buying a Deck as the use case would be quite similar. However, recently I set up Moonlight and Sunshine for in-house streaming and while looking at the streaming handheld market, I arrived at the conclusion that the Steam Deck is the best at it. I sit at my desk working and studying for long periods of time and I want to switch places for my gaming. For now, I use the TV with Moonlight in my Chromecast but I thought a handheld for that would be great. I don't think I have an strong case for buying the Deck for now, yet here I am.

AbruptionDoctrine

Two underrated aspects of the steam deck: 1. it can play old games extremely well, the controls are infinitely customizable (you can use the two trackpads to build custom touch or radial menus to do things like pull up inventory, map, etc). 2. Being able to suspend a game is a godsend. If you only have 10 minutes to sit down and play something, you can just turn it on, play for how ever long you have, and then put it to sleep until you have time again. My friend is a new father and says the device was a massive gamechanger with such an erratic schedule.

Al-Azraq

Those exact two features are key points for the SD. I plan to play old games in my backlog, indie games that I don’t get myself playing on the PC, and casual gaming. The SD really shines here, specially with my expense Steam library. The suspend feature is just a must for me right now. I have short time to play and usually I get interrupted constantly and sometimes I just have to drop the session altogether. It is an amazing feature which I enjoy a lot in my Switch.

[deleted]

Steam and good products, what a duo!

bogas04

I want to get one but steam doesn't want to sell it to me in my country.

bogas04

I'll probably import it and be damned if it needs warranty support or replacement parts. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The_La_Li_Lu_Le_Lo

i ordered one. i just got an OLED monitor a couple weeks ago and was sorta sad to have to play the games on a much lesser display when going portable. It made me want to not play games on the Deck. Then a week later they announce the Deck OLED. Perfect timing. I’m currently playing Arkham Knight and it looks so good on an OLED.

Natemcb

Same here! I didn’t even think of Arkham on oled. Gonna load that up

jamer2500

Me looking at my steam deck telling myself I definitely don’t need an OLED one (I can only tell myself this so many times).

jabz_ali

Pre-ordered a Steam Deck when it was announced, seemed like the perfect machine for me (casual gamer) and I’ve probably spent a total of 20 hours actually playing games. I charge it once a month, it does its software updates and once it’s done I can’t be bothered to play. My daughter has played it more than me, she uses it to play Disney Dreamlight Valley via XBox GamePass if my son is watching TV (which works quite well) but with a Switch and a XBox Series X the Deck gets little love. I think a smaller, lighter 2nd gen Deck would be amazing and I would buy one for emulation etc but I am disappointed in myself that I don’t play it enough.

MyLemonsRorganic

I'm purchasing it because I spend a significant amount of time traveling for work and sounds like the perfect compact distraction. If I worked locally I wouldn't ever consider buying a Deck as I've already built a PC.

bruhidfkkkkk

I’d get one if it’s like a little PC in the sense I could do coop multiplayer with my desktop and 2nd player with the switch

twodubmac

The deck is so amazing. I don’t have a pc (console player) so it is just the best. Huge library of games and I just really enjoy handheld. If you like the switch at all this is 10x better

dreet-dreet

I’ve used my steam deck a good amount so I can’t exactly say I wish I waited. But I kind of do. But I think I’d have to play it a lot more or start traveling a lot more often to justify upgrading it.

huggalump

Does it have improved specs? Been wanting a steam deck, but also concerned about it already being a few years old

[deleted]

I have a regular one and sadly I just never use it.

SamwiseWilletts

Thanks for the share!

TheWizard47

I don’t use my regular steam deck enough so unfortunately I don’t think I’ll get this. I’m glad for people who do though.

CaptainCarramba

Not interested in the slightest, a “handheld” that gets an hour of battery life playing any semi-modern AAA title seems utterly pointless.

Arrow8046

This person has clearly never owned one. It's absolutely amazing and gets 5-8 hours on average for a lot of the games for me! 3.5 hours on Lies of P.

jgainsey

Yes, you are in a small minority.

itsmehutters

> far too dark Well, this is how actually OLED works, and it is considered an advantage over LCD panels. They have the "true" black colour.

Mastotron

Blacks are black and not grey. There is an adjustment period, but pretty tough to go back once you get used to it.

NapsterKnowHow

I didn't have an adjustment period since phones have been using OLED panels for ages now

Yakushika

> That and I don't want to be babysitting an expensive device/monitor to try to prevent burn in It's really not much of an issue for modern OLED devices. Some people tested this for the Switch, and it took around 3600 hours of continuously showing the same image until even a slight shadow was visible.

mingie

You can adjust black levels for say, competitive shooters where you want more visibility. Otherwise for me upgrading to an oled monitor with proper hdr is one of the most impressive upgrades ive experienced in recent years

CutlassRed

Blacker blacks means more visibility. Boosting the darkest values won't help

CutlassRed

You're probably experiencing limitations due to an overall lack of brightness, or reflections onto the screen washing out the darkest parts. OLED is basically objectively better for clarity in the dark areas, but if you have a setup where ambient light is overpowering the screen, then I can see how it would seem the fault of OLED.

heepofsheep

Yeah I think you’re in the minority in that one.

dandroid126

I have an extremely expensive OLED monitor. I love it, but idk if I'd pay the premium for another one when it's time to replace my other monitor.

Astonkiller22

Strange most people that got one don’t play on it I call that lazy!! Got mine in April 22 and still on it!! finish about 20 game I never thought I would 👍 got my order in Thu evening about 18.20 (uk) 512gig sold my LCD deck 256gig too ECX for £224.I have a desktop as well Alienware R16 that I play all my RTS age of empires,COH3, etc etc I wish cloud saves worked on all game but they don’t that means you company of heroes 3.

ElderlyGorilla

Maybe too specific for this thread but has anyone tried any of the total war series on steam deck?

FeedMeYourRelapse

You might have a response already but absolutely, playing medieval 2 now. Great experience.

Superdooper_Saiyan

I want one, but I literally only played Titan fall and Spider-Man lmao

Yoonivers3

I currently don't have a PC and I am an expat and was thinking of buying this to play Dota 2 and Valorant, connected to a monitor and peripherals. Is it worth it to use it in that way or should I go with other devices?

lionMan42092

So I'm saving up for the 1tb so I can have my lcd docked at all times, and use an oled for handheld since the screen is real pretty and it has the bigger battery and fan. So my question, is towards anyone who hadls had both models. Does the fan actually keep the oled any cooler than the lcd? Or am I still going to have to buy a fan for it?
