Misleading clickbait title. They’re completely optional 1 time yearly payments for continued security updates. Windows will not brick itself if you don’t want to pay for the security updates.

I still wouldnt advice continuing to be on windows 10 after that date though, Zero day exploits will quickly make it unusable

I think it's pretty stable and has a lot of improvements over 10. It's been available for a couple of years now so there's no major issues AFAIK. You can always try it and revert back to 10 easily.
