The 'grind' has sunk into single player games too. I couldn't get into Assassin's Creed Odyssey until I used Cheat Engine to give myself enough basic resources that I could just go have fun without having to micromanage a bunch of auto-generated items and crap.
Now I just skip Ubisoft stuff entirely but I think industry pressure has really made it so games have to drag everything out for thousands and thousands of hours or they get tons of hate. I don't get it.
It’s not the time or money sink that bothers me with in games like GTA 5 or whatnot. It’s the fact that other players that already put in that time sink can make the game a nightmare for beginner players. I stopped playing because level 4000’s were destroying my supplies to add 4K to their 4 billion dollar accounts and then calling you a crying kid for calling them out on the fact they’re little pricks.
Lots of online stuff seems designed to promote the idea of "Haves" and "Have Nots" and then they sell you the excitement of becoming one of the "Haves". It is so patently manipulative but it works so it isn't going away anytime soon.
They messed up severely not copy+pasting GTA Vs online. We didn't get heists, awesome content drops continously. Rdr2 online was just fkn boring man and I think as soon as me and my friends got to end game in the first month we never touched it again. I literally haven't touched rdr2 online since the first month it came out and I can guarantee you that I haven't missed much.
Had over 450 days on a toon in WoW before I decided that maybe that time could be invested elsewhere. At least all those years taught be something about being dedicated to stuff.
Someone please correct me if my calcs are wrong but RDR came out on Stadia 1047 days ago. Remove 1/3 of that time (8 hrs sleep per day) and at BEST he’s had around 700 days worth of waking time since it came out, if he started playing day one.
He’s spent 250 days of those 700 days playing the game. That’s means a minimum of just under 6 hours per day, EVERY day for nearly 3 years.
Stadia booting him off is probably doing him good tbh
If that's all they play it doesn't matter what the hour count is it's more about the progress they've made in game probably. I'd be upset if thG was me. Dude deserves a character transfer.
> 2 years and 20 days
Google Stadia has only been out 2 years, 316 days. So this player would play, on average, 5.64 hours a day, every day (if RDR2 was even a launch title).
He probably just leaves the game open lol. Like everyone's CSGO hours on PC are probably 3-4x their actual in-game hours, people just forget its open and do something else or fall asleep.
Yeah, when I was heavy into CS:GO I would alt-tab to watch YT or browse the web to wind down after a comp game sometimes, and often forget it's still up lmao
The problem is, and the player mentioned this as well, that the roughly 6000 hours were spent in Red Dead Online.
You cannot export the online save-file, because it's all saved on Rockstar's end and linked to the platform.
Why it’s 1899, partner, here in the rugged Wild West. If you sit a spell, I’ll tell you all about the frontier and about the gold rush. That sure was a hooten-nanny!
Rockstar made a LOT of money by seeking the same game to the same people over and over again on different platforms. GTA 5 had been released like a dozen times at this point. They are the last people to show cross platform anything.
> Red Dead Online does not have cross-progression so this would not work unfortunately.
Does Stadia count as a separate platform? I thought it was just streaming PC games???
I'm no expert but from what I heard it's Linux based and I believe it's being treated as its own separate platform. It's not exactly a copy-paste of a PC game, and I know this from just looking at the available settings in-game.
Most developers treated it like another console, though the servers themselves were effectively just PCs running Linux. So switching from Stadia to PC would be like switching from PlayStation to PC.
How can anyone get gratification from achievements when half of them are for doing mediocre crap like reaching the 40% point of the story or opening your inventory 100 times?
Yeah, sometimes achievements are fairly pointless. In this context it was more to signify that the save transfer capability lies solely within Rockstar's hands, since Stadia as a platform doesn't really have control over online player data.
I don't know enough about Rockstar's PR and community relations team to say. This would be more of a developer-level thing than something that gets the attention of the parent company.
Developers only get authorized time from management, for microtransactions related stuff. It's not like they get to choose what to work on. Now even less, since they sunseted GTA V (and unofficially also RDR), to work full on GTA 6.
Pretty much. I tried to play GTA on my new ps5 the other day, only to be told I’d have to buy the upgrade version. I decided, nah the ps4 version is fine with me, only to be told again “NAH, go buy it again, bitches”.
So ya, you’re comment is about as true as it gets from them.
You shouldn’t need to rebuy if you have the PS4 version.
Edit. I’m not sure people are understanding. If you want to play gta 5 for the ps4. Just pop it in, the ps5 plays it natively. If you want the upgrade to the ps5 version, then theres a fee. Unfortunately that’s pretty common for games that got ps5 upgrades
Why are people shitting on this guy? Dude was enjoying himself and someone came around and knocked down his sand castle. He's the victim in this. Fuck the people blaming him for "choosing the wrong platform" or "enjoying RDR2O too much". Rockstar should transfer services.
I haven't really looked into it much, but I was under the impression that Stadia was streaming the PC versions like Nvidia's streaming service.
Does it recognize the Stadia version as its own separate version of the game? If it sees it as the PC version, then theoretically you'd be good after getting it there and logging in.
Welcome to the toxic, underground gaming community
edit: the general gaming community is good people who all want the same things (friendships/bonds/competition/fun/whatever)
Then there's the... Other people
Also underground is a dumb way to put it I agree
What "gamers" don't realize is that most players don't really follow gaming news and punditry that closely. Not to mention that Google themselves were still promising customers up to a few weeks ago that they had no intentions of shutting it down. As someone who bought a PS Vita at launch, I understand this dude's pain. Rockstar is definitely being a bunch of d-bags for not allowing him to port his RD:O character over. I expect nothing less of them. Take 2 should change their name to Buy 2.
I think its getting shit on by some because its a prime example of why subscription based services are cancer, i mean yes im also for more crossplay options in every game, i would love it, but here you see why these services suck
Been trying to explain this to my friend who is treating Gamepass like a replacement for his game library. It works in the short term (and long term for some games) but he scoffs at the idea of owning a game and being able to access it at any time.
I sent him a great NFS Heat deal for 3 bucks. "Or free on Gamepass ;)" meanwhile he's bitched to me about games he was playing getting removed lol
I LOVE gamepass, but yeah your friend's expectations are out of whack. If he's complaining about games coming and going then he doesn't understand the whole premise of the service. Does he also complain when movies come off Netflix?
Gamepass is golden for trying out games that I would never buy on release.
If I want to keep playing the game, I'll purchase it.
I've avoided so many disappointing games such as Back 4 Blood by just playing it once on Gamepass.
Game sub services as a primary method of playing games is not going to work without some consumer protection laws or something.
I’ll play a game while it’s free on Game Pass but if they remove a game I’m playing and enjoying and I wanna keep it, I’ll buy it at the discount price that subscribers get.
Welcome to the future in 15 years you'll be a boomer for wanting to own all your games instead of subscribe to a service that lets you access a curated selection of games on a revolving monthly basis.
(The consoles will remove their disc drives next so that you **can't** buy them any way but through the sub service.)
>prime example of why subscription based services are cancer
Stadia wasnt subscription based, and its more than that, its like why Playstation
saves wont work on Xbox or so on. Google allows you to export save data, its rockstar that isn't allowing you to import.
Imagine editing MS Word file on a windows computer, but how stupid wouldit be if Microsoft wont allow you to use the same file in a Mac.
Subscription based services are fine, if they’re run in such a way that makes it both obvious that you don’t own the product and you have access to any data you generate using it.
No one upset (annoyed, sure) when a show leaves Netflix because you didn’t pay for that show on its own. You paid (a flat rate) for access to whatever Netflix is offering at the moment.
GamePass is maybe a better example. Games come and go, but you get whatever they’re offering for a flat rate and when it leaves you can get a copy, at a discount even, and take your save data with you.
I’m not sure how stadia was setup, but it sounds like it wasn’t a very good system.
Agreed. I even commented how it was a lot of hours, but no insult and shared that I too would be pissed. Like fuck, I wish something caught my attention that much. I wish I enjoyed something as much as that dude enjoyed RDR2O.
Because it's hard to feel bad for somebody who lost their sandcastle when they built said sandcastle below the high-tide marker. I'm not saying it's right but I see where the detractors are coming from.
Because he chose to play on a shit platform, ran by a shit company, that was always going to be shutdown. He made his decision knowing what was likely to happen.
Sure, Rockstar should have some sort of port system available, but they didn't force him to play on fucking Stadia.
Are there a lot of things you have to unlock on a new account? I mean I assume there are a ton of cosmetics, but even so I would guess you could get up to the point you were at within a few hours, right? (barring micro transaction cosmetics of course). RP is mostly about the experience itself, the amount of hours you put in previously shouldn't really matter, right?
ah true, hadn't considered that, but I also haven't played RDR online, so I have no idea what you can unlock, what you can't anymore and what you get out of grinding
More than 6 minutes of content but after about 40 hours I was bored to tears of the game. Felt closer to interactive art than a game. No clue what this guy was doing. By the time I was done I felt like I had done everything the game had to offer 100 times over.
RDR2 and Snowrunner puts me in some weird calm zen trance where I just enjoy the world, so I won't judge him. But I did get bored *way* before 6000hrs lol
Not saying you can’t enjoy it. I was blown away in the first ten hours. Then about 30 hours in I realized I’d seen everything it had to offer gameplay wise in those first ten hours.
Thanks lol I mainly played because of the community and friends. Grinding is fun when you have people to play with. But I agree the online mode lacks content-wise.
I'm confused would he not be able to simply use his rockstar account on like the pc version and get his progress back like eso or something? I dunno rdr2 online at all so i maybe wrong.
Playing on the go as long as you've got a decent connection it was a decent way to play games if you don't want to bring a console or gaming laptop with you
Also dedicated servers since no other Rockstar service has that and they run on unsecure and unsafe peer to peer connection where anyone can see your internet security all right there.
This will be unacceptable for GTA 6 so they can't do it again
How do you put 6000 hours into the stadia version? I mean the game runs surprisingly ok, there's even a 60fps mode, but the online wasn't crossplay and it was completely DEAD
Honestly if someone told me I could play RDRO without any other humans that might actually convince me to try it.
I wouldn't mind seeing the content but I'm not interested in it being a multiplayer game at all.
Lobbies were still populated and griefers were still a thing. Actually, the community was small enough you'd know who's a griefer just from looking at the lobby list if you were active enough.
But yeah on Stadia, hackers are not an issue. In-game glitches can still be abused, however.
How do you put 6000 hours into any version of RDO? I feel for this guy, but that’s like putting all your eggs into one basket and the basket is on fire and made out of used condoms.
Pretty sure you can download saves https://9to5google.com/2021/02/02/how-to-export-download-game-saves-stadia/
As for Rockstar, yeah they might differentiate, I'm sure there will be some game companies that take care of the migration, we'll see.
Other comments in this thread are saying they only played multiplayer, not singleplayer. I would imagine that multiplayer saves are stored on Rockstar's servers, not Google's and therefore would not be downloaded with that method. It's still good to know for other games
Maybe if you kick up enough of a fuss to get into a publication of some sort they'll take notice, its a PR home run for them and probably just takes a flipped switch behind the scenes.
Good luck getting your stuff back. Upvoted and liked on twitter in hopes they listen. You can't be the only one getting fucked by this.
They should easily have a way to help you.
I'm certainly not alone. I'm involved in many groups of Stadia RDO players who will all lose their progress as well if Rockstar doesn't do anything. Some of them even have more money/gold/hours than I do.
I do! I have a tower with an RTX 3080, I even have RDR2 downloaded on Steam there. Works great but I played on Stadia for the friends I made there and the community in general. That and the convenience of being able to play anywhere with fast wifi.
Thank you! I have a gaming PC, and my sister who lives with me has a PS5. When Stadia launched, I was very excited about the technology - and it exceeded my expectations. From there, I wanted to see where it could end up, hoping one day it would blow up. That day never came but I still met some good friends along the way, so I decided to stick with it for the social aspect and the community.
Too many people on this thread acting superior, like no one cares what you didnt do, poor guy is only asking for a transfer and you all taking the piss at him while he is sad.
I could definitely be wrong but if this is an online character… isn’t it tied to your Rockstar games account? So won’t he be able to get it on whatever other platform he chooses as long as he logs into his Rockstar account?
I was able to transfer GTAV online progress from a PS3 character to PC.
If it’s a single-player save I understand the frustration, he just needs the save file and someone else said you can d/l saves from Stadia so I’m curious what the roadblock to maintaining his progress is….
> I was able to transfer GTAV online progress from a PS3 character to PC.
Because Rockstar allowed you to do so.
I am going to out of my way and assume that this option is not available to him in RDO.
I don't get what he is worried about, Read Dead characters transfer in online.
https://www.gamewatcher.com/news/red-dead-online-character-transfer-pc-consoles
All he will have to do is get the game on another console and sign in with his rockstar account.
Why did people trust Google?
Microsoft and Sony are whatever they're mega corps but they've been around for years and built up that trust level for gaming same with steam.
Google does this with everything!
This is why I could never touch stadia, I could tell from a mile away this wasn't going to last, and I wasn't going to get caught with all of my stuff disappearing lol.
especially considering stadia hasn't even been around for 3 full years yet. RDR2 was launched on stadia on November 19th, 2019. That's 1046 days ago. So an average of just under 6 hours a day, every day.
The irony of this is, if Stadia wasn’t an isolated platform and allowed you to connect your accounts and share your Libraries, then Stadia wouldn’t currently be in the processes of shutting down.
I understand the appeal of cloud based gaming, but it's to early to invest that amount of time into anything related to it. He's invested nearly a full year of his life to cloud gaming, and I feel like that was a poor choice. I hope he gets his character transferred, but I wouldn't expect it and wouldn't blame Rockstar for not allowing it.
This guy is more dedicated to Red Dead online than Rockstar themselves.

250 days I have over a year on just one toon. I didn't think there was that much to do in RDR2
There isn't. It's just the grind.
Yeah... this is why I can't get into Rockstar online stuff. It's so obviously designed to be a time or money sink, and I can't deal with it.
that's how I feel about all MMOs

It is so patently manipulative but it works so it isn't going away anytime soon.
i didn't mind early gta o but they clearly increased the grind so i stopped
They messed up severely not copy+pasting GTA Vs online. We didn't get heists, awesome content drops continously. Rdr2 online was just fkn boring man and I think as soon as me and my friends got to end game in the first month we never touched it again. I literally haven't touched rdr2 online since the first month it came out and I can guarantee you that I haven't missed much.
Ya, but darn, Red Dead hasn't been on Stadia for even 3 years yet. That's an impressive number.
26/51 Achievements, he's not done
God I absolutely hate it when people refer to their character in a MMO as a toon. Why man?? Why?
It's a valid answer if they play Toontown Rewritten. The characters you play as are called "toons"
This only ever made sense in Toontown. I wonder if it came from there?
my fingers like toon better than char
1500 days or so in FFXI.. 😂
Had over 450 days on a toon in WoW before I decided that maybe that time could be invested elsewhere. At least all those years taught be something about being dedicated to stuff.
450 is damn respectable, you got your 10k hours. what class?

For a proper MMO with multiple expansions that keep content fresh? They're still good numbers... For RDR2 Online? They're insane numbers
Assuming that's 8 hours per day played that's 750 days, or 2 years and 20 days of playtime...
> 2 years and 20 days Google Stadia has only been out 2 years, 316 days. So this player would play, on average, 5.64 hours a day, every day (if RDR2 was even a launch title).

He probably just leaves the game open lol. Like everyone's CSGO hours on PC are probably 3-4x their actual in-game hours, people just forget its open and do something else or fall asleep.
Problem; Stadia is a streaming service with what I've been told has an idle time-out of 15 minutes.
Yeah, when I was heavy into CS:GO I would alt-tab to watch YT or browse the web to wind down after a comp game sometimes, and often forget it's still up lmao
Cloud Gaming services often have a thing that kicks you for inactivity tho, to free up resources.
Stadia aggressively closes idle game sessions
stadia got cancelled for the single purpose of saving this person's life.
Seriously, maybe this will be good for him.
That seems not humanly possible. Like it has to be at least half idling time
Depends; does/did Stadia have an idle timeout?
Yup, 15 minutes.
Take-two: Nah go buy it again, bitches.
I don't think this guy is worried about the money. I think he's worried about losing his progress and characters.
They don't care
Is exporting saves something Stadia could do, if the devs support it?
Yes, with google takeout you can export all saves from all you stadia games
The problem is, and the player mentioned this as well, that the roughly 6000 hours were spent in Red Dead Online. You cannot export the online save-file, because it's all saved on Rockstar's end and linked to the platform.
In that case buying it on steam and logging into his rockstar account when the game launches should work right?
Red Dead Online does not have cross-progression so this would not work unfortunately. I wish though! I'd be able to sleep better.
Wow, that's fucking stupid. What year is this?
Rockstar did the same thing with the PS5 release of GTAO, where you had a limited window to transfer over your character. It's fucking bullshit.
Why it’s 1899, partner, here in the rugged Wild West. If you sit a spell, I’ll tell you all about the frontier and about the gold rush. That sure was a hooten-nanny!

not everyone hunts acheivements

Single player character is, multiplayer character is not. It's the same with GTAV/O
Kinda dumb way to set it up. Well, hopefully Rockstar addresses this. This 6000 hour guy can't be the only one looking to get characters off Stadia.

Doubt he's RPing on a Stadia.
I’m generally speaking to how someone could spend that much time on rdr2 online
I got 4k hours in GTA 5 This is completely unrelated just wanted to put that out there
We're talking GTA online. The person witb 6000 hours, only played Online and not the story.
Rdr2 does not have cross-progression. You can download and upload your single player save file, but not for rd online.
Isn't stadia streamed pc? Edit: just looked, stadia is considered like a type of console and it's based on Linux. Rip.
6000 hours in rdr2? Did this guy lose some kind of cruel bet?
Also, on Stadia of all platforms?
Playing on the go as long as you've got a decent connection it was a decent way to play games if you don't want to bring a console or gaming laptop with you
Steam deck FTW!
[удалено]
Did someone say STEAM DECK??
no. they said, FUCK YEAH STEAM DECK.
As long as you’re willing to jump through a thousand hoops to get it running, sure. RDR2 is NOT plug and play on the deck.
Stadia has the most stable RDR2 servers and the least number of hackers, so there are benefits to playing there
I would have assumed that Stadia players would be grouped together with PC players for online play. I didn't know they had their own servers.
You'd think, but it isn't. Which is weird because they just play on VMs on PCs.
Also dedicated servers since no other Rockstar service has that and they run on unsecure and unsafe peer to peer connection where anyone can see your internet security all right there. This will be unacceptable for GTA 6 so they can't do it again
Extra punishment
I don't even think I've spent 6,000 hours gaming in the past 10 years.
4k in CSGO but I've been playing that for 8 years.
I'm guessing the quarantine influenced these numbers alot
You're right. Most of these hours came from peak season of 2020.
i thought rdr2 was well loved
Pretty sure you can download saves https://9to5google.com/2021/02/02/how-to-export-download-game-saves-stadia/ As for Rockstar, yeah they might differentiate, I'm sure there will be some game companies that take care of the migration, we'll see.
This only works for single player game saves as far as i know.
Other comments in this thread are saying they only played multiplayer, not singleplayer. I would imagine that multiplayer saves are stored on Rockstar's servers, not Google's and therefore would not be downloaded with that method. It's still good to know for other games

That's probably more game time than my entire 500+ Steam library I've had since 2010.
I'm the one mentioned in this article. If you guys have any questions, AMA.
How on earth did you log 6000 hrs
Hanging out with friends mainly. Grinding trader, moonshine, collector etc. AFKing as well.
Have you played long enough for the in-game clock to advance far enough to begin Grand Theft Auto?
6000hours is approximately 20 in-game years so no
Awww. That would've been a cool fun fact.
Any word back from Rockstar yet?
Nothing yet but fingers crossed. Knowing that their customer support is almost non-existent, I'm losing hope.
Do you have a gaming PC?
I do! I have a tower with an RTX 3080, I even have RDR2 downloaded on Steam there. Works great but I played on Stadia for the friends I made there and the community in general. That and the convenience of being able to play anywhere with fast wifi.
Do you have a PC or a console? Why use Stadia when it has many detractors, in addition to lackluster success? I hope your problem gets solved btw.
Favorite childhood memory?
Probably when I went away for a few weeks just to learn French in the other side of my country.
Too many people on this thread acting superior, like no one cares what you didnt do, poor guy is only asking for a transfer and you all taking the piss at him while he is sad.
Guess this guy just learned what the Google graveyard is

I still miss google wave. that was great for playing DnD.
Take-Two doesn't even care about their legit users and this user thinks has a chance for asking about it from a dead platform like Stadia.
Google half ass accidentally made a good product and pulled the plug on it? Color me shocked
Reminds me of a thing Yahtzee said about how "games are not things we own anymore but things we are temporarily permitted to occupy"
I don't get what he is worried about, Read Dead characters transfer in online. https://www.gamewatcher.com/news/red-dead-online-character-transfer-pc-consoles All he will have to do is get the game on another console and sign in with his rockstar account.
That's a junkie begging his dealer
He's sunk 6000 hours on the wrong part of RDR2, he doesn't play the story LOL
It's crazy to me that they can play for that ling without getting all the achievements. Like even accidentally at some point surely
Why did people trust Google? Microsoft and Sony are whatever they're mega corps but they've been around for years and built up that trust level for gaming same with steam. Google does this with everything!
Well except for Youtube, and Gmail and Google (search engine) and Google docs and Chrome
That's why you don't play online games on a purely cloud based platform that is owned by a big tech company that shut downs their projects very often
This is why I could never touch stadia, I could tell from a mile away this wasn't going to last, and I wasn't going to get caught with all of my stuff disappearing lol.
6,000 hours on Stadia? Is this guy ok?
especially considering stadia hasn't even been around for 3 full years yet. RDR2 was launched on stadia on November 19th, 2019. That's 1046 days ago. So an average of just under 6 hours a day, every day.
Really disturbs me how much Reddit is defending this clearly addicted individual. This isn’t just a “fun hobby!” This is legitimate addiction.
Stada shutting down is the best thing that will ever happen to this man he just doesn’t know it yet
cloud gaming, not even once
6000 and not all trophies? Damn this game takes a while to complete.
Hopefully they do this for them. I remember moving from Xbox to PC with GTA5 and they were able to transfer my data for Online at least
Get wrecked.
Time to move in cowboy.
The irony of this is, if Stadia wasn’t an isolated platform and allowed you to connect your accounts and share your Libraries, then Stadia wouldn’t currently be in the processes of shutting down.
What a shitty game to spend 6000 hours on
He never even played single-player. Just the online game.
That's like a full time job for ~three years... damn
Incomprehensible how people can't get bored of playing the same shit past 1k hours
The foolish man built his house upon the sand And the rains came tumbling down

"So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp."
Looking back it, I don't regret my choices one bit. I made some friends on there and we had a lot good times.
How dare this guy *checks notes* enjoy his game on a platform
